STRUCTURAL DAMAGE found, what now?!

  • Into the thick of it with this refit and we're still yet to see any sign of a dry season, or heaven forbid temperatures under 90 degree Fahrenheit. With all boats the structure is the most important thing to keep in good condition. This week after digging through cabinets and cables I find something from the aftermath of the collision that looks horrendous. We also run you through some updates with how certain areas of the vessel are going. With so much time on the hard it will make splashing for the first time that much better next year!
    During the collision of our vessel when all the damage happened the railing that normaly encompasses the entire vessel was destroyed from the midships forward. This week the welders come by to finally repair and install new railing. I give them the instruction to change the railing to stop short of the bow so I can better get access to all the duties that I need to carry out on the bow.

    Thermocouples are a critical safety feature on a gas burner. They stop the gas flow when no heat is detected indicating that the flame has gone out. Good to see you got those fixed.

      We're very happy with the price we paid for the vessel. In proper condition the cheapest we can find one of these vessels online is $160,000 USD and we'll spend a fraction of that figure to get this vessel back to her former glory. So I feel we'll be ahead regardless. Thanks for watching

    Good job. Looking at items regarding the survival of the ship. Most of the GGR vessels that didn't make it went because they were dis-masted, Chain Plates and Mast support posts were extremely important . the winner replaced the chain plates, one of the few that wasn't dis-masted. I've seen rotten mast support under the mast, needs to be very well inspected. Best of luck.

    I hope you r doing the GRP repairs with epoxy resin 🤔, new & old poliester don’t tend to bond very good. Underwater body 😢 you must sand all the old antifouling off before you apply new epoxy primers and antifouling 😊 your best bet for tropicall water is Micron 99, get four coats @65 micros x coat and you should be good for 30 months.
    Keep on pushing 💪💪💪

    Great work you two - terrific to see so much progress and, again, kudos on a very smart move to get professionals in to do the fibreglassing for that damage while you crack on with everything else, you’ve got your hands full. Also nice job on the safety rail repairs - though having done a lot of open ocean sailing and even just east coast Oz sailing I can’t honestly say that I’m a fan of the open bow without a pulpit, in my experience it’s the one part of the railing that I wouldn’t want to do without - especially when sail handling up forward in heavy weather at the times when you least want to be up there. But I appreciate that it’s what you have found will work for you, good on you for trying something different while you have the opportunity - the nice thing about Stainless is that you can easily cut it and modify it at any time down the track as you come up with different ideas and get more familiar with the boat at sea.

      Thanks for the comment Larks. The amount of time we spend on the bow while sailing is extremely minimal and even if we are up that far on the bow we are never without a harness attached to the boat is some way. I think this railing system will really work for us. Cheers for watching

    First of all, congratulations, regarding the damage you found, do not worry, as long as the notebooks and undersides are healthy everything looks great, check well the foundations of the keel, especially the seats of the masts. When you go out to sea remember to keep a insurance for you, I mean as soon as the wind goes up to 15 knots take two curls of the major and keep the Genoa and mesana to 100% I see that the damage is in the across and not by an impact, it can be by blows against a pier or espigon, hammer effect. Do not replace everything to new, go out and over time, as you go into money you make the correct substitutions. You're doing great, great, don't complain, you own an amel, what do you think? 👍

    It's a "Rack & Pinion" steering system, it doesn't use cables.
    That's still minor structural damage, I think you may find more where the hull and deck hit the ship so look carefully. That railing looks fantastic! The boys did an excellent job on it. I did the same open bow railing on my boat to make anchor handling easier. It did make it much more difficult to get on the boat when tied bow on at a dock though. Great job guys!

    May seem a stupid question, but why spend money or time on anything like cushion covers etc.until you know you have the hull, deck and mast fully repaired? Just in case the boat can’t go back to sea as lots of waisted time and money then.
    As for your steering cables our friend who has a 1995 SM got new cables from Amel. Not cheap and it took 6 months. I think he said Amel had 10 sets made, so try contacting Maud to see it she has any. However the ends were mot made correctly and did not un-screw. We had to cut them off, drill and tap the ends by that attach to the rudder then use a bolt.

      We're committed to getting this vessel back to 100%. Theres no issue this vessel can throw at us that we can't tackle and eventually fix. Also we'll be heading back to Australia for work reasons for many months and want to get the vessel back to near ready condition to sail. When we return the mast should be up and the engine in place so we can start our sailing straight away instead of spending anymore time on the hard

    Hey there you two -- congrats on your progress and thanks for another great video! Two quick (random) thoughts: Have you tapped the entire hull to listen for structural damage in the boat's shell? Might be worth it, as you're doing such a great job of ensuring it's safe for the high seas! On an entirely different note, I love a good bird's eye perspective ... but I'm wanting the drone shot of the yard to be more informative (can't instantly recognize which bost is Merreweather) and it could also be something fun! ... you could use colorful tape or even clothing arranged appropriately on deck, to create a shape/symbol or word that's visible from the air (perhaps a smily face, heart, or "HI!!! "?? .) It would make your boat stand out much more easily, night be fun for you to do, and be fun for your viewers to look forward to. And of course, feel free to ignore this completely :)

    The steering rack and gears are available from Amel, but first remove, clean out all the old grease as it goes like chewing gum. We have changed these for new rack and gear on 2 Amel Super Maramu yachts, only to find the old ones were just fine. It was the old grease that was the issue!

    A thermocouple is a valve that, when hot, allows gas to flow through it. Thus to start gas flowing one must keep it turned on until it starts to work. Once open, the valve will turn off if it cools, the preventing unturned, poisonous gas from getting into the room.

    I am enjoying seeing the progress you are making, and looking forward to seeing her seaworthy again. Just one complaint. Please don't take offence. I’ve never understood why these folks who are refitting their boats do not use a soda or sand blaster to clean the bottom. I live in Florida where bottom paint doesn’t last as long as it does in northern climates. Marinas regularly sand blast a hull bottom in preparation for repainting and anti fouling. Someone who is experienced can strip a bottom pretty quickly.

    • @jackdbur
      @jackdbur 11 місяців тому

      Depends on the hull material you need a very careful operator to blast a fiberglass hull.

    • @SailingMerewether
      @SailingMerewether  11 місяців тому

      We researched this idea and would have love too had the ease of sandblasting the hull but unfortunately in this particular yard the cost is around $4K USD which is outrageous and unaffordable for us. Back to the sander/scrapper we go hahaha

    that railing (or more properly known as the "pulpit") the changes you have made are really quite clever. Access to your anchor fantastic, and you can now fly the headsail outside the rail as opposed to over the rail - be advised you would be half smart to have the gap between the end of your rails (as you call them) and the forestay no more than 300mm on each side. (safety regs obligations)

    Not sure how much the reduced bow railing helps tackling the anchor because the furler is there as well. On my Amel I actually tie the furler to the bow railing to prevent twisting.

    Three comments - all of which might appear to be nagative but aren't meant to be:
    1 As a fellow Amel owner - and an owner of other boats too - O think the lack of a pulpit is a mistake. Your bow will not be 'open and clear' once you have fitted the forestay, and whilst not having the pulpit may make some tasks more straightforward it will also make others more of a challenge.
    2 So far as your footage is concerned - I feel I know every square mm of the boatyard from the air! Whilst I can see that the aerial footage is being used as a transition, is there not some way of achieving that without so much drone footage? I'd rather see stills of the work you are doing fading into each other for example.
    3 Cotton curtains - not sure that is a good idea. Polyester will survive UV and cleaning far longer in a boat than cotton will.
    Other than that - impressive progress on the grp repairs.

    There is no part of a fibreglass vessel, or a steel vessel, that is not repairable.
    Whether or not it is economic to do so is another question.
    Repairing a fibreglass structural defect may require additional structure for insurance purposes. Dump the steering cable system for hydraulic. Chains and cables are never great--hydraulics are the best option. The damage to your vessel seems comparatively light, but I would probably remove and rebuild the entire bulkhead. That involves getting the boat perfectly aligned and mast stays slacked off, hulls sand-bagged into design positions, and the bulkhead foundations being extended, strengthened and THEN the new or existing bulkhead fitted, making it stronger and better faired into the existing hull than before with better load bearing or stress dissipation.

      I agree with your comments totally, a cargo vessel hit the yacht, there is probably more damage that is hidden waiting to be revealed.

      Yes dump the push rod steering system for hydraulic or cable.

    Yet another reason why I do not like plastic fantastic boats.. I'll stick to my wooden boats thanks.. Please.... Please... please... less drone shots and more on what you are doing in the repairs.. as in showing us what is done and how it is done.. after all this is about how you are repairing the boat. Yes?? With regard to the railing.. it is there to protect you and keep you on the boat.... I think that is a bad choice.

    The car crash kids. I wonder what happens after these guys spend $200K getting this boat in the water only to find more problems. Perhaps they should have simply bought a newer undamaged boat for $150k and actually go sailing.
