This song was recorded in 1967. The shamisen player is Michiya Mihashi(1930-1996). He was active in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a well-known Japanese folk singer and a Tsugaru shamisen player. He belonged to the same record company as Takeshi Terauchi. This session is very valuable.
I believe it's called Ochi Chyornye. (The only reason I know that is because the comments beneath mine pointed it out. I looked it up though, and I do believe they're correct.)
If you want some more really good Japanese 60's rock, check out the album "Vacant World" by the Jacks. It's not quite as breakneck as this, but it's very e.otionally impactful and covers genres such as blues, folk, psychedelia, and jazz.
Globalization: An Eastern European song, Ochi Chyornye, played by a Japanese band featuring a Japanese instrument, the shamisen, and an American-manufactured guitar, which itself originated in Iberia descended from stringed instruments brought by the Moors (mixed Arab-Berber people from Northern Africa)
I found a record called Guitar Mood from the 1960s that included this song (among other Teraushi hits) in the basement of my college radio station, KDVS, while I was voulunteering there. I thank God for that day
The most underrated Japanese rock legend...It may sounds quite strange for rock fans outside Japan, Takeshi Terauchi and his bands Blue Jeans and The Bunnys have almost never recognized as "rock" artists here in Japan...People including their longtime record company King Records(who own the extremely overrated 70's folk/rock label Bellwood) still think that they merely had been "Kayokyoku(Japanese Schlager or MOR song)".
What's interesting is that shamisen players used to be seen as riff raff, most of them blind and buskering to get by playing door to door for money or rice, hence learning shamisen were kinda looked down upon as a "poor people thing". Then with the nationalist rise and cultural push during the 60's, some of the still alive blind shamisen players suddenly became poster children for the whole movement (ironic term given most of them were very elderly at this point). This just so happened to also be during the time when surf rock started making it big in Japan and a lot of the local bands, Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys being an example, were quick to pick up the shamisen.
Absolutely incredible to bring something new to this chestnut done by everyone including Django . I thought the Tornados version (under title Malagueña) was most nuts but this is the most insane version of this song I’ve ever heard
If Im not mistaken this was on the B side of the single "Tsugaru Jongara Bushi" of Takeshi Terauchi & Bunnys with Michiya Mihashi, a well-known enka & min'yo singer, on shamisen
Thanks for the tip. Catalog number HIT-718 from Seven Seas Records. www.flickr.com/photos/gojira2012/3361067460. The A-side and B-side can be heard here: ua-cam.com/video/0enx4F7jJUg/v-deo.html&feature=emb_logo.
That's because it is literally the same song, but with the title translated from Russian into English. (I know this comment was written 10 years ago, yet so people know)
Just FYI, there is a version of "Dark Eyes" on the album "Eleki Guitar No Subete", but it is NOT the same as this version. I like this one better. This version appears to be a single B-side as mentioned in another comment. Catalog number HIT-718 from Seven Seas Records. www.flickr.com/photos/gojira2012/3361067460. The A-side and B-side can be heard here: ua-cam.com/video/0enx4F7jJUg/v-deo.html&feature=emb_logo.

Koshu Sticky Rice, eastern sticky rice, Really sticky rice, tastes that hypnotize! How I love you so, I can't let you go, White as snow you glow as the seas aflow! Such a pure mouthfeel, and it just got real And I flop like a Salt and Pepper Seal! I shall harvest you every week or two, Fill me up anew, that's what you do! Cross the Doman sky, on a yol I fly, This I can't deny with the botanist eye. Haters must think twice, should they realize Nothing fills you like Koshu Sticky Rice!
shit yeah!!! Japan has 4 coasts not just a West one =D they got surf music all over Yeahhh!!! check out The Surf Coasters also, but yous prolly already knew about them...
+MisterGreenDuck The instruments are tuned; your brain is out of tune. You are hearing the sounds of a pentatonic instrument, vibrato/slight bending on most notes, a bit of delay, and of course a band that rocks; all things that seem too much for some people.
MisterGreenDuck ...sorry not my intention; but many around UA-cam that certainly do not know about music or do not have the feel; so may be Im a bit sensitized about it.
I think the shamisen solos are pretty much vamps of trad tsugaru shamisen tunes. This wouold have been quite a travesty in the 60s, and from what I understand, even in the 80s.

this was a 1963 california surf instramental......also Dick Dale
A shamisen-infused surf rock cover of a Russian folk song? That is beyond cool.
Steven Ostuni what's the folk song's name?
I believe it's called Ochi Chyornye. (The only reason I know that is because the comments beneath mine pointed it out. I looked it up though, and I do believe they're correct.)
Russian folk lends itself surprisingly well to surf rock
It's not really a folk song.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Eyes_(song)
ua-cam.com/video/IOZl7gXj_io/v-deo.html is indonesian rock band version
Can't believe Japanese rock from 60's can be so awesome
i didn;t even know that such thing exists ,damn

You should listen to "The flower travelling band"
I suggest the song "Hiroshima"

RIP Takeshi Terauchi

actualy Ochi Chornie has great surf rock cover in the end of the early '60s from Chad Atkins - you have to educate yourself a little more about R'n'R
And it sounds GREAT
Globalization or signs of a soon to emerge internationalist world order ? 🤔
Absolutely nuts past 1 minute

I love that he didn't just try to copy The Ventures. He had a totally unique take on surf rock.
The Shamisen player is Michiya Mihashi(三橋美智也), the legendary Enka and Japanese trad singer on King Records Japan.
This is the music I'm trying to bring back.

Takeshi, bringing the fire!
He literally has an album from the 70's named "FIRE"
The most awesome subgenre of rock is eleki traditional japanese covers of russian songs.
Вообще-то это японская песня кто-то из Великого Советского Союза украл её
I feel this only the beginning of some rabbit hole.
Super excellent cool!!!!!!
This is just insane. Love it!
This is the greatest thing in the universe
This should've been in Kill Bill Vol. 1
this dude can shred
Absolutely incredible to bring something new to this chestnut done by everyone including Django . I thought the Tornados version (under title Malagueña) was most nuts but this is the most insane version of this song I’ve ever heard
I was right up the front for this!

Takeshi is a Grate man of humanity
Sublime Shami! Surf's Up!

Such a great song. This would be amazing in any Tarantino movie.
One of THE great surf rock instrumentals of all time. If you don't like this, you don't like music.
I fucking love the drums in this song
AMAZING
I see ninja and cow boy riding in Siberia
I dig the Shamisen playing on this tune
sick tune i love it !!!!
He has his own special touch✌💐💕💕💕 freedom to we the people
This is some Quentin Tarantino type shit...
Awww yisss.
Brendon Young My friend just sent me the link saying the same thing lol! Wonderful
Fuck Tarantino, he is a plagiarist without creativity. Also, he is not the owner of all surf music. Take it away from my surf.
+Brendon Young Seriously! Somewhere between Misirlou and the Kill Bill soundtrack!
+Toughguysdontdance12 "Good, good... let the butthurt flow through you."
+Brendon Young Totally, when I first heard this group I couldn't believe Tarantino missed using them for Kill Bill. So perfect honestly.
If Im not mistaken this was on the B side of the single "Tsugaru Jongara Bushi" of Takeshi Terauchi & Bunnys with Michiya Mihashi, a well-known enka & min'yo singer, on shamisen

WOW!
Featuring Les Yeux Noirs. Niceeee!
That fingerpicking thing that He does at 1:09 is fucking insane!
Yeah!
Holy crap this shit rocks!!!
This song sounds -heavily- based off of Ochi Chernije... which is also "Dark Eyes."
Awesome.
That's because it is literally the same song, but with the title translated from Russian into English. (I know this comment was written 10 years ago, yet so people know)
This kicks so much ass
Cover of Очи Чёрные?
+Vlad literal means eyes black
'Seven Seas' is not the song title, it means 'Seven Seas Label'
Its title is 'Dark Eyes'.
Shamisen player is famous MIchiya Mihashi.

The guitar at 1:09 holy fuck!
Magnífico
double bass drumset !
正調寺内節のジャケットの写真です 真っ赤のジャケットデカっよかった
yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah
Rocking the fucking double bass!!!(in the pic)
Old vs New (or what was once new in the 60s)

Wish the instruments were tuned
5real that banjo at 1:20 was outta tune as shit.
Harold BeaumontFinns Its a Shamisen not a banjo, thats why it sounds "out of tune".
+MisterGreenDuck
