This Pump is a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower. It takes in water at one "hydraulic head" (pressure) and flow rate, and outputs water at a higher hydraulic head and lower flow rate. Applications: 1. Pumping drinking water from streams that have significant slop. 2. Lifting irrigation water from streams or raised irrigation channels. 3.Lifting drinking water from springs to settlements on higher ground.
For all those who don't understand. This is used when an unlimited supply of water is available above the pump. Like a river or pond etc. It is then pumped to higher ground over great distances. It's not high volume but makes up for that by constantly running without using an outside power source. Water is not wasted. It's simply put back into the ground where it belongs. Ideal usage is to pump to higher elevation to a holding tank. Great system.
This is a nice manufacture of an old idea, one of the old family farms in England in the 1800s used a cast iron version of this to get all the farm's water from a lower stream. It's totally free to run, the energy to lift the water comes from the water that is returned to the stream flow. While the flow may be slow, it's running 24/7 so if you over use in the daytime it can catch up in the night. There really should be an outlet pipe for the water returning to the stream just so that it doesn't damage the foundations of the pump machine.
Thanks, for a great demonstration of how water hammer works. It would be a nice tap water system by the creek. The amount of water lifted by this device is less than input. The potential energy of the incoming water plus the wastewater equals the potential energy of the outgoing water in heigh level.

These used to quite common where I live. I think that some of them were used in series to reach higher. Not sure how that would work, so I might be wrong. The source was usually a river with a dam providing the water head to run the ram pump. There are remains of some of them still in existence, but not used any more.
To clarify- the "waste" water just goes in to the river below the dam, so it's not wasted. It's not "free" energy of course. The energy is provided by the sun which creates the clouds that provide the rain upstream. However, the sun still has millions of years left to continue supplying energy before it dies.
Team Ram pump!!!!! Cool 😎 long story short! Nice valve! Or if you want to get all science spicey and attract some nerd adore 💕 Them you can explain. NICE VALVE with nice valve(s) control
Your video is very good quality. Great sound and picture. Thank you for sharing your experience, techniques, tips and especially your very compelling video. I wish you health and success offline. and soon create many great videos. I support you.
You know how much money you can save as a small scale farmer like this. Pair this with a few 12v pumps and some solar panels and there's virtually no limit to how large you can scale this
The reason this works is the drink bottle at the top of the pipe. As the water siphons from the 5gal jug it fills the pipe and pressurizes the bottle. As the water flows back out the bottom valve, the pressure in the bottle manages to push a small portion of the water through the top check valve. Eventually this will fill the hose going to the tank on the roof. It's limited to the height this would work; at some point the weight of the water going up the hose to the tank would exceed the pressure in the bottle and all the water would then flow out the "release" valve. This works, but it's not "free" energy. Stored potential energy in the water as it falls to a lower gravity state is what drives the system. An Archimedes' screw is far more energy efficient and can pump more volume.
As to the maximum altitude limitations problem where the weight of the water reaches a point where all the water goes to the release valve, I would say that I have a theory that might work. Lets say you want the water to go up like 4 times higher than the maximum altitude you can get it from a standard ordinary hose, I would say that using much thinner hose, like those 1/4" polyethylene white tube pipe hose commonly sold for Reverse Osmosis (RO) filters and its cartridges, those hoses are so thin going upwards would not render the same weight ratio than going upwards with one of those bulky fat hoses, therefore you should be able to get that water much higher with those 1/4" hoses.
There is no realistic height limit to this system. Merely use the exit hose to fill a tank about 10 feet above the height of the unit, then use the tank as the source for a second Ram Pump to lift it to a second tank 10feet up, & so on. Multiple pumps will bring usable water to many elevations.
I just watched this video cause i read a comment of someone saying the great pyramid of Gizah looks like a giant ram pump. If somehow that's true you can get an idea of the scale it could had reached with thousands years old technology.
Hi admin thank you very much for the idea you shared its great! If you dont mind can you give the measurement of the coupling ,elbow, other things ,..thank you
It is a water whip, hydraulic ram, water hammer ... It needs running water for its activity, preferably from a stream. Cannot be used in a well. The hydraulic ram can pump to a height of about 5-10 percent of the inlet water volume. We have been using it in Europe since the 18th century.
have several questions. 1- Can you tell what should be the ratio of the diameter of the outlet pipe to the inlet? 2-Which dimensions are important? I tried your design but it didn't work. Would you please tell me important tips? thanks
I once had and used a Water Ram Pump for my drinking and bathing water (filtered from a spring of course). I built a 2 foot Dam, and had the opening starting at 4in diameter down sized to 3/4in - 50 foot downstream for maximum back pressure which you need to make these work properly. The only issue I had is freezing water during winter. I think I paid $85 for mine online.
Bernoulli's principle,,, there is an old dam in the Philippines built by Spaniards pumping water from river up to reservoir and still pumping to this date.old technology.....
Water hits the valve going out. That water, hitting the valve that closes, pushes that momentum up into the pressure tank which creates backpressure to "pump" the water. Still gonna cost about $40
depends how much the volume is inside the first hammer chamber.. the more the higher..and the more pressure... but like this is should reach about 20 feet easy
Intake hose should be 15 feet or longer, he was cutting it close,, your outtake can be as long as you want,,,, as long as you're elevation is high enough on intake,,,, meaning he needed to move that jug of water higher to get any more height on his pump, ratio is about seven 1 to 7
The drain is not working in turn to pump it up. How to do it? Does it have to do with the pressure of the incoming water? Does it have to do with the distance of each pipe? Do the two bars need to be the same height to work together?
@Square Sushi Can we use this principle for first floor when there is a low supply of water . In our house four portions are there. For our house we are facing the water problem.
Is There a reason why u keep the pipe behind "water in" Open ? Would thought The pressure would be better for "water out" without the water leaking out behind..
I made exactly the same assembly, with the same components, but I couldn't get the pump to work. The swing check valve on the left stays either open or closed, but doesn't perform the random movement where it rejects a little water and closes/reopens by itself. I don't know what to change to make it work, it's exactly the same type of equipment I bought, and I fitted it the same way you did. Does anyone have any ideas?

Use the outlet to store more water
For this to work the stream has to be above the pump, so you can't just return it from where you got it.
Use the outlet to flow water to your fish ponds.

This is great I will try this thank you for sharing your ideas, new friend here from Cebu Philippines
I think this would be very helpful in aquaponics or hydroponic. No electricity needed.
Why not ? I think it is possible
It is possible but the spit out of water by the check valve it make your water supply or tank may drain..

an archimedes screw isn't "self" powered. That is it doesn't run on gravity. you need a prime mover to turn the screw.

That make sense because the hydraulic ram pump was invented in Europe (England). 1772 . Source Wikipedia.
Explain how it works. Is the pressure enough to rise the water level to that much height?
Water hits the valve going out. That water, hitting the valve that closes, pushes that momentum up into the pressure tank which creates backpressure to "pump" the water. Still gonna cost about $40
Please, could you tell me, what maximum height can this pump lift water? Thank you

Nope. I mean yes but close counts.

The drain is not working in turn to pump it up. How to do it? Does it have to do with the pressure of the incoming water? Does it have to do with the distance of each pipe? Do the two bars need to be the same height to work together?

Its not free energy but uses the energy in the water and wastes lots of water.
what we can do is collect the wasted water at the bottom and reuse it
