Tea Time with Toph is a UA-cam series starring the voice actor of the original Toph Beifong herself, Michaela Jill Murphy! Follow along with all new episodes as Michaela rewatches and reacts to Avatar: The Last Airbender, all leading up to the new live-action series releasing on Netflix! Excited for what's to come, and thrilled to have all you Twinkle-Toes along for the ride!
Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Michaela's voice has been featured in several animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Finding Nemo, The Emperor's New School, and Brother Bear 2.
You and your mom talking about the tea is like Iroh and Zuko.
Iroh: "This tea is nothing but hot leaf juice!"
Zuko: "That's what all tea is Uncle"
Except if Zuko is the tea fanatic and Iroh hates it 😂
It's more like young Toph old Toph.
Michaela: I might have felt a little too sheltered like Toph
Mom: "I didn't thwrow up so the tea is ok"
How could someone from my own family say something so hurtful?!
hahaha
HOT LEAF JUICE!!!!!!😅😂
Was Michaela grown in a lab? She looks EXACTLY like her mother, like she was cloned. Also appreciate how she's been carefully promoting and bigging up tea cozy and the teas this whole time for the gift and her mom is just no Fs given.
FR,THOUGHT THAT WAS HER SISTER
God really just hit copy/paste on that one and called it a day, right? =P
At first glance, I thought she was her sister!
that's an interesting reply lol
@@georgercopno need for changes lol
An interesting fact is that Sokka and Katara were going to fight alongside Toph against the various Earth Rumble fighters, but it was decided very late in production to have Toph fight the wrestlers on her own to showcase her unique martial arts style according to commentary by the creators. And I'm glad that they not only did that, but also gave her a disability and made her a girl instead of a muscular guy. They had a debate for whether or not to make Toph a girl with Aaron Ehasz pushing to make the change. Nick wanted a boy audience for the show, and yet as you and many other fans have shown, girls very much want shows like this too. And of course, doing this role served as a big jumping point for your career!
And as someone with a disability, I appreciate all the disability representation in the Avatarverse. It reminds me of the Paralympics. No matter Winter or Summer, I keep watching, because behind every athlete is a story. Like watching Ibrahim Hamadtou competing in Para table tennis without his arms by holding the paddle in his mouth was one thing but learning about his backstory of how he lost his arms in a train accident when he was 10...made me emotional. Paralympians conquer their setbacks and embrace who they are, and it motivates us all.
the goat!
Just going to put this out there as a Boy/male, Seeing Toph be an awesome person for me made me more interested in the show and the characters. I actually don't need stories to only have male leads to be interested. Weak female characters can also ruin my enjoyment of something. The way movie/game industries try to manufacture interest is often not really how interest is made. Formulas only work for so much when it comes to human behavior.
This show needed the balance of female characters and male characters.
Toph remains my favorite character alongside Iroh.
Toph is GOATed. She has always been my favorite character, she is such a badass. You brought so much personality and sass to her with your voice.
My favorite character getting a reaction from the voice actor. Sipping tea is the icing on the cake.
Can’t wait for the Toph introduction in season 2 of the Netflix adapation, and for Michaela to become a bodybuilder, and do a deep voice, so she can cameo as BIG, male Toph in the ember island play.
Your mother is so lovely!
The Beifongs are indeed rich and in the upper social classes too. Toph is probably on the level of the landed gentry. So she certainly owns lots of territory and wealth, but there’s no signs of her family having any official titles. Chances are that she is of minor nobility rather than being a child of rich merchants since the nobility get more respect than merchants. Kind of a similar situation to Mai is my guess. She has a lot of social, political, and economical influence as does her family. I wouldn’t say she’s outright royalty but it seems as though the Earth royalty truly do value and see Toph’s family as a major asset. They possess social prestige as well as power and wealth.
Beifong's wealth can be seen in the Legend of Korra, I think. As Suyin was sent with Toph parents by Toph and then she "created" Zaohfu, I do really believe that the entire city is Beifong's property
I think the Beifongs are like one of the most influencial clans in earth kingdom history. they have been for ages. you can read in Kyoshi's novel how important they are. Lu Beifong (Tophs ancestor) was like the second or third most powerful person in the earthkingdom after the king (who back then was also a bit of a puppet leader). I think the Beifong family has lost some of it's esteem and wealth since then. but theyre still crazy rich and influencial.
"My great-granddaughter is the greatest Earthbender!" Shoutouts to your MeMaw
We’ve arrived at the infamous introduction of TOPH! And wow, it’s incredible how similar Michaela and her mom are in mannerisms and personality. This is fun.
Famous*
8:52 Aang should wear his "twinkle toes" nickname as a badge of honor. It is Toph's acknowledgement of Aang's elusiveness, a quality at the very core of what makes an airbender an airbender. Coming from her, that is a massive backhanded compliment.
This was so meta. Seeing toph react to toph.
Also life parallels
I like that her mom hears the voice and immediately remembers her at that age despite her being an adult, its so sweet.
This is one of my favorite episodes, for obvious reasons. It basically has to work as a sales pitch for an entire new main character, and they do it flawlessly. You instantly like them, and they make them unique by giving them abilities and limitations I don’t think had really been done before, and haven’t been done that much since. I feel like when shows introduce a new character there’s a traditional period where we get used to them, but here they instantly fit in and we’re already accepting of their introduction. I definitely see why people love the boulder so much. Tophs cool as well I guess. Thanks, Michaela!
What I like is that they pitch how powerful she is for her introduction but she doesn't get nerfed later just because the camera isn't on her.
This has always been one of my favorite episodes since it introduces Toph and The Boulder is one of my favorite side characters. I’ve always been a wrestling fan, so that aspect was right up my alley. Also I love having Mick Foley be The Boulder’s voice.
Him voicing him was perfect lol
Mick Foley doing his best Macho Man / Hulk Hogan impression
"This doesn't change how we feel about you."
It might be true in the way that the Beifongs never feel Toph as more than a blind girl who needed protection, so instead of giving her the freedom, they restricted her even more. But the thing about restrictions... the more you do it, the more likely they'd rebel
5:18 oh my gosh years later and she still got it, if they ever do anoth avatar animation i hope she voices toph again
The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. The Melon Lord finally takes the stage!
Wow, 96 years old. That's amazing. My grandmother's turning 92 next month.
It's good to hear from the mother's perspective..
I just love how despite being inspired by the Rock, it's Mick Foley doing the voice....one of his rivals. The creators tried to get The Rock to be The Boulder though. I also like that the Boulder said "but there was no earthbending. Nothing made contact. The Blind Bandit just fell out of the ring" because it emphasizes that the airbending visuals are just there mainly for the audience (mainly because there are of course instances where it's strong enough to be seen), that the other benders mostly don't see it because it's of course air, and that's what makes it such a powerful element. Because you'd have to be able to counter it and for these other benders, they haven't seen an airbender in forever.
The song that plays during Master Yu's first conversation with Lao Beifong is Mo Li Hua or "The Jasmine Flower", a traditional Chinese folk song from the Jiangnan region. The song dates back to the 18th century. In the Avatar world, Gaoling is located in the south, which coincidentally suits Toph's knowledge of Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. The clothing and hairstyles in Gaoling resemble those of the Tang Dynasty of ancient China. The name Gaoling is written as 高陵邑 in Chinese. The word 高 translates as "high", while 陵 translates as "mausoleum".
Give me your missiles or I’ll dethrone you
Your mom should visit Germany, she would fit right in!
"It doesn't taste like dirt completely" is such a german compliment...
This is as wholesome as it gets.
The second best part of the episode was some nice voice work by Mick Foley.
When he was part of the "Rock 'n' Sock Connection" tag team, he got to do a lot of promos with Dwayne Johnson, including imitating The Rock's catchphrases, which made Foley a natural to do "The Boulder" in this episode.
"The Boulder feels conflicted about fighting a young blind girl."
"Sounds to me like you're scared, Boulder!"
"The Boulder is over his conflicted feelings, "
"Whenever you're ready... The Pebble!"
That is so wholesome that her mother watches the show as well, supporting her daughter! And also her Mamaw!
Oh my god is your mom beautiful or what? Just a short video to see what she's like, but seems like a really wonderful person. Engaging, smiling, trying new things, enjoying the things you like right along with you. She just seems like a lovely person. Plus, she's just bloody beautiful to look at. So glad you brought her on. That was wonderful. Thank you.
Your mom is so nice and omg you look the same as two drops of water! Almost all facial features match perfectly, and you're both very bright and emotional, that was so lovely to see ❤
I see Michaela and a CG version of herself 20 years in the future sitting next to her. They are basically the same person in looks and honestly voice and demeanor
I dont know where I'd be without this representation 💜
I have an incurable degenerative eye disease. I always knew I was going blind, but when I finally started to really notice the ramifications of this disease I watched ATLA again and it really quelled so much of my fears of becoming completely helpless. Toph showed me I can still be a badass with low or no vision 💚
I often imagine my tactile senses as the visuals of her tremorsense as I tap around with my cane 😂 and quote Toph so often when people forget I'm blind.
Thank you for bringing her to life 😁
How can you not love Mick Foley, feels like he's almost blending his Cactus Jack character with a dash of Macho Man Randy Savage
With a dash of his old tag partner
with just a pinch of dude love
Foley is god
YES! BEST CHARACTER ON THE SHOW! LET'S GOOOOO!
Omg there's two of you! lol
17:16 I think your mom is right, they might not feel an obligation to themselves, but basically kidnapping a 13 year old kid is a different story. So Toph had to give them a reason to feel that it was somewhat okay, that when Toph eventually had to go back they would have an excuse for taking her away.
Looking forward to next weeks "therapy sessions with Toph's mom" lol
So cool to meet Toph and Mom at the same time ❤
I think it is an interesting contrast between Toph’s lack of support from her parents and the love and support given to Michaela from her mother to pursue acting at a young age. Thanks Mom! Thank you Michaela for helping to make one Badass lil lady! 💪🪨💚
I feel you with the stiffling parents in my pre-teen/teen years, I had something similar too. Especially the kind who still think they did the right thing. It takes time to heal from overprotective parents, but I'm glad you seem to have a good relationship today.
You don't need to heal from overprotective parents, you heal from abusive ones. Ones who are protective, do their duty as parents, but hurting their kids in the process is what is the problem. Talking as if just stifling or overprotective parents are an issue themselves, makes you come off as an entitled brat.
@@EmptyMan000 it just sounds like I'm a brat because overprotective parents do spoil their kids. No wonder one stereotype is usually followed by another. These are usually consequences of insecure parents with their own frustrations and traumas in life and who end up trying to correct this by wanting to raise a perfect child. The problem is that they don't realize the child also has their own needs. Their narcissism prevents them from realizing this. Parenting becomes about them and not about the child. They don't understand that a child needs to grow and develop independence, and that for that you need freedom. You can't just cut off someone's curiosity. People need to make mistakes to grow, they need to play and interact with other people their age. So let them follow the trends, let them be cringe and let them make mistakes. This creates good memories, creates knowledge. And this also creates self-sufficiency and social skills, essential differentiators of a truly good education. So yes, I think that strict parenting is equivalent to bad parenting and that this is actually a serious mistake.
your dads genes didnt even up a fight
I so loved being introduced to Toph in her debut episode. I love this episode every time I see it. I am now getting my 6 year old into the show. She likes Toph.
Tophs voice actress AND her mom reacting to Tophs first (active) episode is something I didn‘t know I needed to see but ABSOLUTELY DID. Thank you
You absolutely nailed Toph's voice after all this time! I did not expect that at all, but now I'm all here for it😁
Love meeting your mum and hearing a bit about the behind the scenes (more BTS please). Hope you can get some other voice actors as guests, maybe Zuko, Sokka, Katara, Suki or Firelord Ozi as some ideas.
Firelord Ozu? You mean Mark Hammel? That's right "Luke Skywalker" did Ozu.
@lautz73 Yes, that's the Firelord. Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, the Joker, Skeletor etc)
Very lucky woman you are to have such a supportive mother for your favorite role as an actress.
Been waiting so eagerly! HA HA!
This is such a turning point in the series.
The moment we've all been waiting for, Hail The Melon Lord!!!
Your mother is amazing this episode is coincidentally my favorite 😂 and I love toph because she reminds me of one of my siblings and it’s funny 😂❤
❤❤❤
Toph’s mom: she must be so scared, I might never see her again
Toph: *dissign them all, no matter which side they’re on*
As someone visually impaired, toph was always a badass, which she is, and the "seeing through earthbending" is so cool, the fact the characters forget she's blind every other episode is the best thing and the blind jokes are awesome
"I think she makes it with cactus juice." Her mom in a gem!
21:12 This line went over her head. Still it was funny. We all need that tea therapy
This is the first time I'm seeing the face of you and I already feel like you are the coolest person on earth (other than your mom of course, she's twice as cool). Love Toph, love your voice, man I feel blessed just for stumbling upon this video today
Mama Murphy is so CUTEEEE!!
Wish I had a Mom like her growing up.
Not if you have ever seen Michaela's TikTok. According to Michaela, Mama Murphy put her daughter through the wringer during her childhood, made her a neurotic people-pleasing wreck to compensate for being a child born out of wedlock in a strict Christian community. That's why you never see Michaela's father. Sure they get along much better as adults and are basically like pals, but parent wise, it seems Michaela's mom would be awful to have growing up.
6:49 the fact she didn’t expect him to be able to dance at the dance party, but his original nickname was “fancy dancer” also, I realize a lot of the fight is just talking anyways
The strongest earthbender💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰
“My daughter is blind”
Sir, I know, but she clearly learnt great earth bending and is capable of defending herself. Her blindness is actually one of her greatest strengths.
I was just about to comment "mom is spilling the tea"... and you say it too!😅
This was too adorable XD It's interesting how you weren't allowed to touch PG stuff until you were in your late teens, then you went on to voice-act in one of the best PG shows of all time haha
Toph's voice is so precious.
some bird in the forest: 10:36
20:40 I immediately thought of Zuko at the word scarred, which is good, because the next episode is Zuko alone 😮😊❤
9:08 this reminds me of Zuko and Iroh, “this tastes like hot leaf juice!” “That’s what all tea is uncle” “how could someone from my own family say that?!😱”
It's super cool you mum knows all the moments, shes a real fan.
toph is a badass and mick foley was hilarious as the boulder
Well, now we know where a decent amount of the delightful quirkiness comes from.
Hi Michaela's Mom! Nice to meet you. Thanks for letting your daughter be the voice actor for such an amazing character!
The day I awaited for weeks and weeks is here!!! Also, great on having your mother be a guest. 😆😆😆💚
The boulder really loves this episode and would like to see more 😂
Your great-grandma turning on the telly to hear your voice acting is just precious. 🥺🥺🥺
They're nobility--Lord/Lady [insert name here] Beifong. (and also really rich)
The blind bandit has arrived!!!
Toph is here!! Great having your mother on. I’ll never get bored of “it sound like your scared Boulder” and “whenever your ready, The Pebble!”. Love the fact that your quoting yourself haha
Lovely. I was about to ask if you saw any parallels, so I’m really glad she did. ❤
15:50, the Beifong family was very wealthy, maybe nobility but uncertain. Not royalty though, best way to describe them is that they were the Gates of the Earth Kingdom.
yay the blind bandit returns
Whoa. She's good. She's REALLY good!!!
I feel like I am watching 2 disney characters . Your voice and personality is so lively .
2:57 I know you’re toph’s VA, but you sounded exactly like Azula right here lol
She did!!
5:26 that laugh, she sounds like the villain in every kids’ show
“Hm, interesting dirt” just feels VERY “toph’s mom” lol
That's the episode we'r realy waiting for.
15:33 Toph and Asami are the only ones rich enough to afford a last name.
The little arguments about what toph should’ve done is funny because you are her daughter, and it’s like
“She should’ve ran away because her parents are mean”
“No she shouldn’t, because running away from home and your family is bad” 😂
I love that your mom loves motivating you, and is basically your cheerleader for you when you were young to now!! You can see she’s proud of you!! I’d love to have her on more if you choose to, and it’s nice she knows the lines; is happy to reminisce about the va of your voice as toph!! She’s got a few good witty comments/jokes, but sad she doesn’t like tea!! I love tea!!
The fight between jaw lines
The Boulder was actually voiced by a WWE former wrestler, but I think the voice actor channeled "The Macho Man" Randy Savage.
Toph isn't a princess; she's an heiress to the largest family fortune in the world.
I am also not an expert on the ATLA lore but from what I can remember the Beifong is a wealthy noble family but not royalty or anything.
They do however have a member of the family that holds/held a powerful political position, Lu Beifong(Toph's Father's, Lao Beifong, Grandfather, I believe).
Wow :O mom is like a carbon copy of Michaela, just a bit more seasoned. And she seemed really nice! How wonderful this episode was. :)
Everyone forgets toph is blind because she shows how capable she s of doing almost everything not blind people can
Your energy is something else and definitely the right kinda vibe always keep it up we need ppl as positive as you
This is such a fun idea before the Netflix version! Didn't even know this channel existed before
YASSSS THIS IS THE PERFECT EPISODE TO REACT TO!!!
every now and then i can't help but hear azula when you speak😭 ESPECIALLY 4:35 to 4:37
So glad we’ve finally made it here. I can’t wait to hear your commentary moving forward with your personal knowledge of the show in each episode.
Anybody else feel like they MUST have those badgermole Ts now too lmao 😂
They’re so cool!
Second reaction show I've seen and Mamma Evette is amazing!!!
This is one of my favorite episodes...not just because it's our proper introduction to the best Earth Bender...but because of The Boulder. I love Mick Foley.
My favourite character in ATLA. Toph Beifong ❤
“Yeah, but of course” 😂 “she waited and she listened” thank you for staying the obvious
I love when reactors have their mom visit. ;) (Actually the second instance in two days, huh!)
And you two are almost clones, ha.
i think toph felt so comfortable defying the rules when travelling with the gaang because it was truly the first time she ever had freedom, once she got a taste of independence she didn't want to go back home
I always prefered sheng puer.
Shou puer is fermented in a hot wet pile to try to mimic the longer fermentation and aging of sheng which changes significantly after about 10 years under the right conditions.
But even young shengs are often very high quality and tasty.
A pet flying boar would be terrible if it ever needed medical care. Pigs are already a menace to catch and restrain, boars are outright dangerous. Add wings to that and uhhh yeah no thanks. 😂
“Bold as in boulder”
Mom joke unlocked
So in the days of Kyoshi, Lu Beifong was one of many Earth Sages, a collective that was once the spiritual core of the Earth Kingdom, but which had become more akin to corrupt lobbyists vying for control over the various regions of the Kingdom. While they officially never held any political power, they each had significant influence and wealth. Many of the sages were killed during Kyoshi's time, and the few who restored the order to its spiritual roots disappeared during Roku's years. No Earth Sages have since existed, so it can be assumed that Lao is not one of them, but his wealth can probably be traced back to Lu's sagehood.
