The Destiny 1 tower was that place & from within its walls some of the greatest legends of Destiny's Lore would've defended the Last City. Today we're going to look back at the Old Tower and remember some of its old stories.

I think there's going to be something really bittersweet about walking through the Pale Heart version of the D1 tower. It won't have the construction and noise of the original, it won't have Cayde talking nonsense over the coms (or maybe it will, who knows), no city to look at from up high, and of course rather than looking at the Traveler, we'll literally be INSIDE the Traveler.
To an extent I'm almost glad the Tower isn't returning for Into the Light, because I think that moment of walking through a shell of our former home in eery silence will be something special.
It had a subtle ambience to the life in it. Not a bustling place but more of a gentle hum of life in the background.
I shed at least a tear or two from leaving it behind.
“Pssst… take me with you”
"I hate this job."
@@MynameisByf in the TFS trailer we see a snippet of a cutscene of our guardian walking up the stairs to where the speaker used to stand, when i first make it through the portal im gonna plug in my old ps4 controller to my pc and slowly walk through the tower and simply reminisce of "the old days" and consider all the time that has passed since i first met the speaker back in 2014, also sorry if things pings you we are same time zone and if this wakes you, you have my eternal apologies byf ":D
@MynameisByf Bro!!!! I'm so pumped for that 80 minute video!!! I'll be ready snacks in hand lol
I do hope that The Tower gets rebuilt upon our return from the Traveler's pale heart. And no matter what we face after the defeat of The Witness, all will be well.
I agree.... Just be prepared for a possible 4 month hiatus to the farm whilst the bots sweep up after onslaught lol, too soon? Yeah ok.... my bad 😊
Yeah, maybe destiny will finally die after this last whimper of a DLC.
@@Agc2749 if it were that easy the game would have died with uldran mydood
While the new area of Shaxx’s armory/arsenal is cool, I agree. I hope the D1 Tower returns. Imagine, the old Tower still the same, but having new features to accommodate our Coalition allies, the Hall of Heroes, renovated, as a larger space, and a larger table, a spot for each Coalition leader, their ambassador, (example: Caital and Saladin, Nimbus and Quinn), and seats at the table for a newly formed Consensus, with civil leader representatives. A Guardian Rasputin, and the Dark Vanguard could be involved too. We could stop by here for quests to increase Coalition Unity, with each leader we help. Each Coalition Unity rank, unlocking a new feature. Maybe in battlegrounds or onslaught, Rasputin summons an orbital Wasat strike, or House Light hacks Vex systems with the aid of Neomuni hackers. This would really make the Coalition feel genuine.
i dont think the witness will be defeated
I really hope that Final Shape surprises us with an actual return to the original Tower. The vibes were immaculate.
To me, it feels more likely that the old Tower will be rebuilt in Echoes, or the next saga. Which Bungie has said, begins sometime two to three years later. Releasing three years from now. Either way, the Tower rebuilt, with features to accommodate our allies, after the Final Shape, would prefectly symbolize an end, and a new beginning. The Hall of Heroes, perhaps then, a place for Coalition leaders, and a new Consensus, to meet.
I really wished they brought back the D1 tower. I feel like it was perfect. Everything was walking distance to each other and didn’t feel like a chore having to go from one end to another. The vibe was amazing as well. The vanguard felt united unlike now where they are completely separated.
@@sytun3375 i think more so it was something that I looked into more than I should have. It’s like we got the D1 tower in the collectors edition, there’s been things working on it in game, hell we land on the reimagining of the tower in final shape. You would think anyone who just started playing D2 would want to see a fully rebuilt D1 tower before hoping into final shape
@@Wrecktar96 Someone else mentioned this in the comments but it could be more impactful to see the ruined version in the Final Shape of our old home to remind us of how far we’ve been since then. But I can totally see a callback to D2 Redwar’s ending where we stand on a repaired and improved Tower while looking over the city at the end of Final Shape’s campaign.
While it may not be 1:1 to the OG Tower, I do agree with you that having a united social experience with the Vanguard (if they stay a thing), and Shax, Saint, and all of the general vendors in one space so it feels like a command post, but also so we don’t spend the first 15 minutes of every session jumping around the system. And there’s enough space for holiday events, episode vendors (give the sweeper bot who has to clean up the HELM every year a break), a version of the throne world relic for quick crafting access. One can hope they do something like this.
@@Wrecktar96 nah they pretty clearly led on with the collectors / into the light promo stuff imo
That kind of falls apart when you consider into the light wasn't planned. They came up with it in the past few months. Meanwhile, the collector's edition was made ahead of time during the development of TFS.@@CoronadoJoe77
Its good proof for why bigger isn't always better. It used to frustrate me like crazy when I'd walk into the next zone of d2 tower just to be stuck with a loading circle for a couple minutes because the server or my internet was playing up
It's really weird to miss something you never had... As a player who only begun playing in destiny 2, I never been in the old tower (except for 0 Hour and the Red War) and never met Cayde (except for forsaken and a few old strikes) and yet I am very nostalgic about those two.
im not kidding when i say the og tower is the most nostalgic thing ive ever come across in gaming and I played destiny 1 for not even a 100 hrs
As a D1 year one vet I gotta say, it was great. I’m hoping TFS harps on our collective nostalgia somewhat, seeing as even folks who’ve not been there in D1 miss it. Truly a powerful testament to how good the old tower was
When that old tower music played at 3:24 man.... it's a tune on par with Minecraft's nostalgia
Its “deconstruction” on the og destiny ost album
@@JamisonEdits me in orbit waiting for my 'devils lair' fireteam to be found
They completly set us up for the old tower, they knew everyone thought it would be the old tower and announced a social space. I can't imagine its not coming back but it propably won't.
Hopefully it’s one of the extra “secrets” they’ll show us on the final stream next week, they knew putting a repaired tower dead centre in the promo art would have made everyone speculate about it, seems like it might be one of the things they keep for last
I literally JUST started re-installing D1.
Good timing.
I did today.
Bringing the tower back ourselves 😅
Me 2
sooo why is the tower literally smack dab in the middle of the poster
An eighty minute video of pure, unadulterated loreful goodness? Byf, you spoil us!
On a note on this video though, I do wish I could have been there with d1 to have experienced the old tower. I know seeing it in The Final Shape won't be the same, but I'm thankful that we'll be able to at least experience a piece of it.
I love your videos Byf. You've done more to keep me interested in Destiny's universe, than Bungie has.
Same lol
Facts
I shall keep making them, as long as I can keep your collective love for it alive.
I mean considering the size and description....
That thing behind shaxx sounds like a certain moon artifact that was supposedly locked up on a certain crucible map...
Who knows, but it absolutely does fit the description.
The fact that it’s in the tower, means Zavala had to have authorized it showing that he has indeed pondered what him Elsie spoke about. I have 2 alternate guesses:
1.) Drifter did say he would do something that would “make us shiver” with the motes we gather in Gambit. Eris being an advocate for using the Darkness and her connection to Shaxx, it could be Shaxx agreed to guard it for when it was ready to be used…
2.) It looks like a mini Heart of Darkness, but I wonder if they possibly got it from the Veil (assuming it’s still relevant beyond what the Witness used it for)…
The tower a place I spent dancing, collecting engrams and sorting my vault ahhh nostalgia, I’m excited for that 80 minute long video byf!
We can all agree that though he died, the speaker went down like an absolute badass. I mean, telling your capture to off himself, it takes some massive balls
the tower in destiny 1 will always be my home and it hold a place in my heart from the very beginning i first play destiny amazing video byf
Many Thanks for this. D1 tower ambience is like no other game really. Watching your Warlock walk at the end highlights the superb skybox and lighting in D1 back then. People forget how good the graphics were back nearly 10 years ago. HDR is there now but wish there was still some innovative gfx tech going on somewhere now in D2.
Just got done bingeing all your vids over the past 3ish months since I took a break from all things destiny. I’m feeling better about the game and hoping that the final shape will kick ass. Thx for always delivering content even in the driest of content droughts. Glad you’re feeling better, keep up the amazing work!😊
With the way you describe the state of the tower in D1, it almost makes me believe that they SHOULDN'T bring the tower back, but rather a whole new one, both a beacon of hope and strength, but also humility. Because make no mistake, the City has been humbled a few too many times in the last few years.
Absolutely love your Destiny content, seriously want to thank you for allowing me and others a place to come and further explore the vast lore that is Destiny as well as a place to be able to catch up on the lore because it is very fast pace at times! Again thank you!❤❤❤❤
Gotta say, it's been a good day. Bought a rare bottle of whiskey from my local liquor store this morning, enjoyed the Bungie stream peacefully while opening at work, and now I learn Byf has a huge video coming soon regarding the Precursors. Life is good 😊
I still have my D1 now on my PS4, as I bought the D1 collection to add to what had on the PS3. When D2 is down I go there, as do other, it seems. I have seen a lot of players on the game and still hanging out.
I miss the old tower :(
Right off the bat, a sweeper-bot.
It’s crazy watching this D1 footage how much better the armor detail and lightning was. A lot more distinct.
Its the d1 armour designs. They were built to look like something from a lived in sci-fi future. While in d2 they shifted to more cartoony, outlandish designs. The big way to tell is to ask yourself "can the character actually put on or take off this armour?". For a lot of the d1 designs, the answer is yes. While for the vast majority of d2 designs, they can't. Theres no straps, zips, belts, or any other visible way to put the armour on. It just comes vacuum molded to their torso.
I really hope that they include the D1 tower music when we get access to it. I would hangout and listen to it before heading out. Thanks for the video BYF.
When you think about it, it's pretty crazy that pahanin introducing 2 friends at a bar led to like 75% of major events that have occurred in the timeline since then
It's not the 'old tower', it's just the tower. We are currently on the wall but for some reason Bungie doesn't know what a tower is.
It will always be the Rampart to me, it's no Tower.
It's kind of hilarious when you remember that theres eight towers. Only one of them was destroyed, why are we on the wall next to the main ruined one instead of one of the other seven? Like yeah, the fell into disrepair, one is a crucible map, etc. But they're still physically there and would be trivial to get back operational again compared to fixing the D1 tower. If nothing else, it would have been way easier to set up one of the other seven than it would have been to set up all the stuff we built on the wall.
@@ASpaceOstrichover the years theres been updates that placed construction cranes near The Tower. Bungie's been hinting at reconstruction efforts in the background very slowly but they are there.
@@xrstevenson it's been kike that for years now, idk if we ever will go back
Been very excited by new lore, especially stuff that isn’t filler- so take all the time you need on the video! Been sort of away from lore since witch queen so excited for what’s next!
Yooo, I loved Tribes Ascended. I'm glad they reached out to you. I totally forgot about it.
You just HAD to start the video with "Dismantle", nothing gets the D1 Tower nostalgia flowing like that piece...
Damn bro, i remember i used to play d1 all the way up to 2019, i never picked up d2 because i was way too poor for a pc and its dlcs but i couldn't let go of d1 man, and now i saw this video. This just brought back some crazy nostalgia man. The amount of times i'd just play taken king raid with my guys would be stupid. Thank you byf
I still didn't let go, every other time I log back in D1 and keep my nostalgia refreshed.
This was a nice video. Felt less like a scholar telling you esoteric legends, and more like an old war hero sitting down and sharing old memories.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I missed your D1 videos so much and I haven't followed the D2 lore since forsaken so your recent videos just confused me
If you by chance end up doing more nostalgia videos, I’d love a deep dive on the Speakers. I feel like we learned a lot about the one we knew because of Saint and Osiris, but I want to know what else is out there!
Been meaning to do that for a loooooong time.
@@MynameisByf I’m the guy who’s always commenting asking for a video on Ares One. I think there a lot of basic stories from this universe that your fans just haven’t heard.
LETS GOO GREAT TIMING
if anything most of all i miss the old tower its comms hearing random lines from the vanguard, other characters down to air traffic about "live cabal on board" was something that never got old.
It makes me wish I had been able to play Destiny in the old days, so I could have experienced all this when it was there. I can go back and play D1 sure, and I have a little bit, but it's not the same.
Holy Shazbot!!! Tribes 3?! Im old enought to have played the original Tribes in the 90’s and Tribes 2 in the early 2000’s. That is awesome!
8:09 Incorrect. The Consensus Hall is somewhere in the City and much larger. We see it in the Osiris Prequel Comic. What you showed here is the Vanguard Hall, used exclusively by the Vanguard…and sometimes Xur.
Yes, and no. This is where The Osiris comics make things complicated. If I'm remembering the way Bungie writers explained it waaaay back in the day on twitter correctly there are meetings of the wider consensus (including citizens and factions not in the core membership of the big three, hence why FWC is there whilst not being on the core council at the time) and then there are consensus council meetings of a smaller manner where it's just the big three vanguard/consensus + The Speaker. The former are held in that separate venue you're talking about that's shown in the comics. The later took place in the tower.
Correct of you to point it out, but man... I absolutely hate that that comic's lore threw so much unnecessary confusion into place...
I believe this to be even more the case because of the audio logs of actual consensus meetings.
www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/hollow-words www.ishtar-collective.net/entries/peace-by-consensus With the topics being discussed in these, if there was a wider population in the same room, you'd expect them to have reactions that interrupted the conversation's flow, but they're not there. That implies the degree of privacy offered by the Vanguard Hall.
It's a mess... If I'm wrong I'd gladly accept that, but to the best of my knowledge, this is what's what. Comic lore is a mess.
@@MynameisByf hmm that’s all pretty fascinating! Thanks for sharing! Maybe you could have mentioned that there’s two separate Consensus Halls, one in Our Tower and the Larger Hall in the City for clarification? I think originally they admitted the FWC’s inclusion was an error but nice to see that they’ve tried to reconcile it!
Also while I have you, do you ever whitelist commenters? My friend claims that his comments never seem to be noticed by anyone (even when early) and I can’t even see them. Is this a glitch or intentional! Thanks for your time! 👍
Huh… I need to definitely look back at their stuff because I do not remember any admission of error at the time.
I will be honest. In my mind, curse is a wash, the Osiris comics are a wash. I wish it was clear. It’s been 7 years now and the answers are fading into the past.
If im honest, the sponsorship for this video actually made me interested in the product! I want to try it at some point, nice one, Byf
I remember that bar. I miss it; wish it was used for something in game. Like Spider’s
i was hyped for the next few vids to be ab the witness lol
Love the story and the lore
Honestly, that thing that you showed at the beginning of the video 0:58 in the back behind Shaks looks like a mini heart of the black garden
A "Superblack Heart"?
The fact they referred to the thing at the back as 'The Symbiote' when 1) Its for the superblack shader, and 2) they're owned by sony, im genuinely curious why we havent gotten any Symbiote related cosmetics
Also I'm wondering, will this be a proper social space like the Tower, or more of a "social space" like the HELM or The Enclave
An 80 minute Byf video coming our way is the best news I've heard all week! Who cares about delays, keep up the great work.
Finally a youtuber with asponsor iactually like!!
that game reminds me of the good old Unreal Tournament and Quake days ^^
also thanks formaking a video tributing tothe OG tower, the best tower ^^
The weird 'Heart of the Black Garden' looking thing in the Tower shows we have a VERY bad habit of bringing home extremely dangerous artifacts.. D:
Rumour has it, Tr3v-r still roams the dark corridors of Zero Hour waiting for unsuspecting new lights.
That k you Byf, thank you Martin!
Apologies for the long post ahead...
At this point, I really kinda don't want to go back to the old tower, as a social space, that is.
Thinking back on it. I never really had a consistent team of people to raid with, my schedule was (and still is, tbh) a bit too erratic to keep a consistent group. I mostly relied on LFG to get my raids done, but I still remember we would all come back to the tower after a raid before we parted ways... well, for the most part haha. I think that in these moments, it really became a place to just wind down after what could have been hours and hours of attempting a particular encounter. I noted that 99% of the time we went back to the tower, it was either after a victory over a raid, or for a short reprieve before we could find another person on LFG to join the team. Any given LFG team, if it fell apart, it was within the raid itself. Y'know, the usual reasons: People got tired, became frustrated, ran out of time, and whatever other myriad reasons one might have for leaving a raid team.
But going back to the tower, be it to take a breather or to briefly wind down before the group dissolved, it really felt special. Forgive what might seem like a tangent but... limitations can be a good thing. Nowadays we have an abundance of open world games, games in which you set your sights on the horizon and you chase it, games where the phrase "if you can see it, you can walk to it/climb it" is often uttered. This wasn't the case back when I was a kid and played games on the NES, N64, etc... I vividly remember playing Ocarina of Time and wondering what strange lands existed beyond the borders of Hyrule. Of course, the technical answer is that... They don't exist. There's nothing beyond the boundaries of the game map... But hey... it sure did make me wonder, huh.
Taking it back to Destiny, THIS is the kind of feeling I had for years on that tower. Going as far back as vanilla D1, I always wondered what it would have been like to go down to the Last City. I honest-to-god wanted Destiny to BE like an RPG or open world game in the sense that you could go to towns and engage with the population. Heck, I still do, but I don't think it'll happen, and this is fine. It's true that over the years, we've gotten to explore bits and pieces of the city, certain sectors here and there, but not *quite* to the degree I would have wanted (though the farm and the Eliksni Quarter came pretty close). Most of the time we've been down there, it's been on missions, or with some manner of objective to accomplish. What I desired was to simply... walk among the people of the Last City, they who we protect.
All of this I wondered from balcony of our original D1 tower as I gazed out into the distance at the city below our (mostly) silent god. But that's all I could do, just... gaze at it and wonder, and this is not something I'd have been able to do if the LIMITATION of the tower did not exist. The prospect of going down to the city or the immediate wilderness surrounding it was such a tease, but of course, we were, in a manner of speaking, "confined" to the tower. Hmm... When you think about it, it's really not unlike something some of you might or might have experienced at some point in your life if you've found yourself gazing at a set of buildings and just... wondering about the lives of the people in there (I believe you call that feeling "sonder"). To say that I experienced this while playing Destiny really speaks to the "immersiveness" of its world and the great craftsmanship of the artists behind its creation.
It really was a special feeling, though, and this was made all the more so because it was linked to certain TIMES in my life. When I started playing Destiny back in 2014, I was in college, when Rise of Iron dropped, I'd moved across the country to go to medical school. Now we're facing the end of a decade-long journey, and I'm 2/3rds of the way through residency. I'm a doctor now, not fully independent, mind you (still got a year left), but it really hits me, looking back... Man I really grew up with this game lol...
So much has happened in a single decade, and while it's nice to walk down memory lane from time to time (I suspect TFS will have a lot of this), I don't think there's anything for me in going back to the old tower... Because it just won't be the same. The line "you can never go home again" fully applies here. You simply cannot recreate the time I spent on that tower, it's just not the same, nor will it ever be... and so I have no interest in it coming back beyond as a nostalgiabait setpiece it appears to be in TFS.
If you read through this whole thing... wow, wtf... uh.. thanks haha.
I didn't realize there was a new Tribes game! Let's go!
A part of me believes that whatever the black blob is behind shaxx is what is or was inside the black decahedron on the moon, I could be wrong though but it would be interesting if it is
Wish I could've been in the old tower.
What about our D1 guardian. We know that we’re not them because of dialogue from people like Elsie Bray, so what happened to the guys who killed Oryx?
HOLY SMOKES TRIBES!! Long standing tribes player. Nice!!! Thank you!!
id be happy if they pull a red war and let us go to the new tower after final shape campaign
Hey Byf
What armor does your d1 warlock use ?
0:53 that’s thing behind shaxx is the super black shader it hasn’t been seen since destiny 1
During the time it's taking to rebuild the tower, I've seen a bunch of whole neighborhoods in real life be built and the tower is still seen being *repaired* to this day since the release of d2
The Rear concourse would be PERFECT for the way the game currently handles events like Guardian Games, Festival of the Lost, Etc.
I get people were nostalgic for the tower, but into the light was 100% the wrong time to have us move in up there again. We’re at our lowest point in the war; the witness has entered the traveller, and its forces have breached the city. Yet we open a lofty new tower? It doesn’t make sense from a narrative and in-universe perspective
Imagine a pyramid appears in your bathroom and the guardians are launching beach balls off the tower into it
Yeah after Final Shape return to the Old Tower is the best time for it. Like finally returning home and heal the wounds after all this years of constant war against the Darkness and its puppets
It would be nice to see the old tower! It would be great to play the red war campaign on legendary mode with champions!! They could make that into a raid!
Given the Darkness’s association with memory, I’m wondering if we’ll be getting the D1 Tower *and* Cayde-6 inside the Pale Heart as physical manifestations of *our* memories of them.
(Or-with the way Darkness can manifest subconscious desires, rather than conscious, deliberate will like the Light-Cayde-6’s return could be a manifestation of *Crow’s* subconscious desire to erase his sins as Uldren.)
Thanks TribesIIIRivals
How has no one thought that the weird ball thing is A or the black heart? I feel like a sports fan yelling at the player to do stuff xD
I feel like the black thing in the back of shaxx is the amonally thing from the map.
Looks like the heart of the black garden...sorta
It is genuinely depressing that we can't go back and experience the whole story again from beginning to end. But I also miss dinklebot soooo
I mean its sad that we're not getting the Tower with Into the Light. But personally, as I've been telling my friends, they did say that it's a *new* social space, not a returning one.
Imagine a day where there all Towers are rebuilt, and when you load into "The Tower" you get randomly loaded into any of them. I think that would be sick
The clips of d1 tower at the end of the video literally look current quality wise
D1 was the pinnacle
I agree that the area that Lord shaxx is going to be using for the the immediate future is part of the jurisdiction of the cryptarch and the future War cult it's only an assumption. on fabric that can be seen in the areas and one or two places and based on the basement that was near the cryptarch location in Destiny 1? all in good fun but congratulations for having your own manufacturer.
Taniks is the final shape 🙌🧙♂️🔥
I really miss the old tower. After playing D1 since day 1, the D2 tower just hasn't felt right. It's also sad seeing the Light/Dark Saga coming to a close because I've followed this game since Destiny 1 had its first trailer release in 2012 I think.
Could it be possible that the blob in the back is the anomaly from the crucible map the anomaly!?
im not expecting the old tower to return until TFS when we go into the traveler.. but keep in mind there is still one more stream before into the light
old tower is cool and i'm nostalgic for it a little, but i really am not bothered if it never comes back
How about a brief look on the Skrank Gang and their stories?
I miss Destiny 1, and I miss the easier times too. Thanks for the video Byf!
I hope there's an editors note from martin on that 80 min video... "God this took 3 weeks to edit" or something like that.
is it me wishing or was there a open door right at the beginning of the hall? could this be the exit into the old tower? it felt like she was walking carefully. could be to just not shake up the cam too much for us to have a better look, could be not to give away that the old tower is actually part of the game again? idk but one can only hope
I'm actually glad that the tower isn't the new social space. It has the potential for such emotional impact. If it returns at all, make that moment special.
For once, i HAVE NOTHING TO SAY!! Thank you for this brief visit to an old but much loved home from home.
Is that the Black Heart from D1 story?
What’s the gun from the gameplay?
Tbh I never thought they would bring back the old tower. Final shape is all about nostalgia. If we enter the traveler and see the old tower for the first time after 8 years it feels nostalgic, if we get it now it would not work the same way.
80 minutes?! Man, we're gonna be eating GOOD.
Ooh wow, i didnt realize that that "Storage Room" really does look just like the terminal puzzle room in ZeroHour to unlock the ship.
If thats true then it begs to question... what the hell did Shaxx do about/with Trevor?!?
I do wonder if Tower/earth will ever include a cloud ark in the future now
The old tower is home…..real home. It has never felt right since we left it.
I think they're gearing up to have the old tower return in The Final Shape, and didnt want to release that iocation here.. but not only would it have it gathered hyped, but wouldve gotten new players used to the layout
5:24: when the Fire Nation attacked.
Seeing Holliday again but in D1 together with Cayde still stings hard tbh.
Holliday was my favorite female character in the game and her death, right after Rasputins death (who was my favorite character over all) was a painful time in Destiny for me.
0:58 OMG is that a god damn SIVA power core!?!? Dont say that the last subclass we get is a damn SIVA subclass...
It’s my favorite British destiny lore guy. Tribes look awesome sign me up!!!
The return would be cool. I miss the old Tower
I really miss the good ol days of the taken king in my mind that was destiny’s peak
Every time Bungie teases a potential return to the tower to drum up buzz, a little part of me dies.
