Yeah. People keep using Eggs as an example of the massive price difference since 2020. This is an outlier stat as in 2022, Egg prices, per dozen, were at an adjusted-for-inflation price of $2.86 for a dozen Grade A large eggs (compared to an adjusted-for-inflation price of $2.09 in 2020), but in 2023 this SHOT up due to a perfect storm of inflation and avian flu. Another round of avian flu in early 2024 saw this price rise again, then fall back to somewhat more normal 2022-ish pricing.
People are cherry-picking prices on certain products in certain years to misrepresent the overall price across the board.

Seeing moms forced to use credit cards to buy food to keep food on the table is heartbreaking.

    • @KeithDCanada
      @KeithDCanada 3 місяці тому

@@Dan-sm1to Yes, but the extreme examples being shared, are not the average that is overall being experienced by everyone. People are cherry picking '2 years ago Eggs were 'this' price... and last month in this one store beef cost me 'this' much... and we have no other information in these posts about why, for them, this experience may not match the average.
All we know for sure, is the national measured average cost of Food & Non-alcoholic beverages is about 21% more than 2020. That's not a maybe... that's a fact. While it's sad that some people are experiencing worse results, it is still just an anecdotal example of an extreme in a few cases, a few areas, or even just someone fabricating or exaggerating an answer to align with a narrative.
I know its hard. When prices on certain products went up, I had to start shopping around. I started shopping at two different stores, a Walmart, and another closer chain, depending on which items each had cheaper than the other..... and when the prices on something went absolutely through the roof - like Honey - I stopped buying that product.
Part of the price inflation is corporate greed.. companies seeing an inflation spike, and padding their numbers even higher and just blaming it on inflation. Part of it is dependant on the product and ho much the prices of resources used to create it have gone up (like Fresh Water). Certain products will be affected more than others, and if someone just happens to buy a lot of the very affected products.... they ill see a higher bill than others. I had to change my buying habits to keep my household food prices in check. It's unfortunate. but it's the reality of the world we live in right now. Food had to be grown and produced... as the weather changes, and resources becomes more expensive, that will translate to higher food costs.
Just watch... the price of chocolate/cocoa will soar as time moves on, because the amount of fresh water cocoa plants need to grow is going to make it a luxury item eventually. A person who buys a lot of cocoa/chocolate will see a larger impact to their food bill. Meat of various kinds will become expensive faster than other food products because it's one of the most water intensive foo products to produce.
Lots of factors go into food prices, before and after production, and this can create price fluctuations from region to region... but it is a fact that 21% is about the amount that prices, on average, have gone up.... and if that is not your experience, then you need to look at the types of products you are buying and see if your buying patterns need to change... if you buy a lot of meat... yeah you will e noticing a more rapid food bill increase than your neighbor who doesn't. This is the reality today.

The smaller the ticket price, the more price changes will fluctuate though.
A store like a 'dollar store' type of business wants to keep things simple for their transactions... so when they need to raise prices, they don't want to make an item $1.11. On a $1 item, they may just mark it up to the next 25 cents.
Someone isn't going to change their buying habits if an item is $1.25 instead of $1.11.... but if that $100 pair of shoes is $125, instead of $111... that may cause some people to shop around. I am sure you are just being comical with the dollar tree example, but using small ticket items as examples in discussion of prices increases is typically a bad idea.

The latest Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows beef and veal prices are up 7.7% compared to January 2023. More specifically, ground beef is up 5.5%, beef roasts 6.7%, and beef steaks are up 10.7%.
This comes a week after the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) warned we could soon see record-high beef prices.
So what’s behind the price jump? Like we previously saw with egg prices (2023 Avian Flu crisis), supply is largely to blame.
At the start of the year, there were 87.2 million cattle and calves in the U.S., AFBF economist Bernt Nelson explains. While that sounds like plenty to support U.S. beef demands, Nelson notes that’s the lowest inventory to start a year since 1951, when estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture put the overall count at 82.08 million.
The last time the U.S. experienced such a dip was in 2014 when, according to AFBF, cattle inventory fell to 88.24 million.
Unlike what happened with eggs, the latest limited supply isn’t being caused by illness among cattle.
Instead, experts from the Farm Bureau point to drought conditions and the rising costs of supplies to maintain herds. Both have led to farmers reducing their herd sizes, Nelson explains.
“The latest cattle numbers are a stark reminder of the challenges facing America’s farmers and ranchers,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall in a press release last week. “Severe weather, high inflation and geopolitical uncertainty are taking a toll on farmers across the country, and families will see the effects in their grocery bills.”
When we last saw cattle counts dip in 2014, beef prices hit a record high in 2014. Prices dropped in the years after, jumping again in 2020, only to fall later that year. Since early 2021, beef prices have continued to climb.
As for why beef prices are relatively low at the stores now, Nelson points to a high level of beef production. Higher prices may not slow consumers much though, according to Kansas State University’s Meat Demand Monitor. A survey of more than 2,000 respondents found an increased willingness to pay higher prices on beef products at the grocery store between November and December 2023. A recent report from Wells Fargo also noted that retailers have noticed consumers are “more enthusiastic about buying steak when the package price is under $10 per pound.”
However, more respondents (31% more than in November) rank price among the leading aspects they take into consideration when it comes to purchasing protein, the Meat Demand Monitor reports.
It’s worth noting that beef prices have dipped marginally since December, coming down about 0.3%, according to the latest CPI. Data from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association shows wholesale prices across various cuts of beef have come down slightly through the first weeks of February, but are higher than prices we saw during the same period of 2023.
------ as for your local store going from $16 to $40... that is an anecdotal example. Difference in price could be because: You are being disingenuous and those prices are made up, the price was on two different cuts of meat (type, weight, etc), a very local supply chain issue that raised price temporarily in your local area, a misprinted sticker price on an item (I have seen it), etc). This is NOT the national average experience on beef prices though.

      Article - March 2024
In 2023, egg prices hit an all-time high, topping out at about $7 per dozen in some parts of the country. That number was reached thanks to a perfect storm of inflation and a severe bird flu epidemic. Fortunately, by mid-summer, prices had returned to somewhat normal rates. But, according to new reports, we may be headed for yet another expensive egg season, just in time for Easter.
According to Nerdwallet, egg prices are once again on the rise due to another outbreak of bird flu and inclement weather. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that " highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) viruses have been detected in U.S. wild aquatic birds, commercial poultry, and backyard or hobbyist flocks beginning in January 2022." To date, it has affected more than 82 million birds across 48 states.
Nerdwallet pointed to the latest Consumer Price Index, which showed that egg prices increased 5.8% from January to February alone. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) additionally shows that the average cost of a dozen Grade A eggs rose from $2.52 in January to $3 in February. And all this is happening just a week before the Easter holiday, a time when people purchase around 180 million eggs a year, according to Business Insider.
Egg Smuggling Is on the Rise at the US Border as Prices Soar
"Typically, as we go into Easter, you see a lot of promotional activity and ads for Easter," Brian Moscogiuri, a global trade strategist at Eggs Unlimited, shared with Axios. "We're not seeing as much of that this year because of those price levels that we're coming off of."
The good news is, as Moscogiuri noted, the demand for eggs usually sharply falls after Easter, rising only again during the winter holidays. Additionally, the USDA's Food Price Outlook for 2024 reported that although all food prices are "predicted to increase 2.9 percent, with a prediction interval of 0.5 to 5.3 percent," in general, "food prices are expected to continue to decelerate in 2024." The report added that egg prices are predicted to decrease 2.8 percent in 2024, "with a prediction interval of -17.2 to 14.6 percent." This wide prediction, the USDA said, reflects the "volatility in retail egg prices." But hey, at least it's better than 2023. Right?

You have to look at specific industries though. Some have had specific issues, like Eggs. From 2020, where the adjusted-for-inflation price was $2.09 per dozen grade A eggs, the price rose to $2.86 in 2022 (which by the non-adjusted prices was an increase of about 50%). In 2023 the combo of inflation and an bad round of avian flu circulating, caused egg prices to spike. This happened again in very early 2024, with prices dropping later to more 2022-ish levels.
"Unlike what happened with eggs, the latest limited supply isn’t being caused by illness among cattle.
Instead, experts from the Farm Bureau point to drought conditions and the rising costs of supplies to maintain herds. Both have led to farmers reducing their herd sizes, Nelson explains.

------- So, Herd sizes shrink = less supply. Same amount of people eating beef = Same Demand. When Supply goes down in comparison to Demand, prices go up. Ad inflation to the mix, and prices go up a lot.

One of the big drivers of inflation was the Covid checks aka Trump Checks. Everyone got them, regardless of their financial or vocational situation at the time. It's basic economics that this will cause massive inflation, which it did. There's a lot to place blame on Biden but Trump shares a great deal of it. Mishandled the pandemic during both presidencies.

    • @KeithDCanada

Fact Check (Straight from US Inflation Calculator - Egg Prices Adjusted For Inflation) (Listed as Egg Price in Year/Average Annual Egg CPI/Adjusted For Inflation in 2022 dollars)
Category: Eggs (Grade A, Large, Per Dozen)
      Trump's last year in office - 2020 - $1.51 / 212.542 CPI / $2.09
      Biden's first year in office - 2021 - $1.67 / 222.074 CPI / $2.21
So, adjusted for your 60 count box (assuming no discount for buying at a 5 dozen bulk rate):
      Cost of 60 eggs in 2020 - $10.45
      Cost of 60 eggs in 2021 - $11.05
So, you are either being disingenuous, you are remembering prices from the wrong years, or the stores you are buying from had some bizarre pricing.... because nationally, a price of $5 for 60 eggs hasn't bee seen since..... 2002 where the 'pre inflation adjusted price was $1.03 per dozen. In 2022 a notable markup on eggs was seen pushing the price to $2.86.. which is close to the $14 price you state. But your $5 price in 2020, I call bullshit on, unless it was some local trend on the market that skewed WAY different than the average.
The following formula shows how to adjust egg prices for inflation:
1980 Eggs Price x (2022 CPI for Eggs / 1980 CPI for Eggs) = Adjusted Eggs Price in 2022 Dollars
(From an article dated March 2024)

The pundits figure out a perspective where the exaggeration is rebranded as a lie, and spend all the time justifying their rebranding. But when asked "what about calling -20 a +100", the response is "We are not going to engage with absurdities, when someone is calling 20 as 100".

I was paying .98 cents/ per pound for onions in 2020 but now they cost $1.44/per pound. You have to factor in shrinkage. Yes, a big box of fish crackers cost exactly the same price but that big box is 1/3 smaller. I could buy a gallon of milk for $1.99 back in 2020 but now I am paying nearly $3.00. January's heating bill was $380. but in past winters with the same duration of below 0 I paid $240. On a long enough timeline a person can figure it out. If you started living on your own in 2022, you wouldn't know the difference. A normal cost of living might go up 3% every year. In 4 years that would mean we pay 12% more from the start to the end of the Biden administration. 12% can be reasonable but the 21% is not.

It was weakened because iran had overall less money, but there’s always room in the whatever budget they have for some hamas action. What they need to talk about is why those groups were essentially dormant during his presidency. Instead we’re stuck on a semantics game because he overstated/exaggerated his claim. His strategy was effective for weakening hezbollah and hamas, but sadly it’s getting over shadowed by that 0 funding claim

Beef is up around 20%. Eggs around 50%. Carbonated Beverages around 32%. Canned Fruit & Veg around 32%. Flour & Sugar around 30%. Those are some of the highest increases since 2020. When all food and non-alcoholic beverages are totalled together, it's somewhere in the 21-25% range as an average.

When Trump says they've doubled, tripled and quadrupled in some instances I took that as individual items like Chicken Wings for instance which used to be the cheapest part of the chicken with exception to the gizzards and on pare with livers but now is the most expensive part of the chicken surpassing breasts. There are quite a few foods I used to buy I don't buy anymore because they were once cheap and now are outrageous. Under Trump I was giving $1-$1.29 for a head of lettuce and $0.29-$049 a pound for cabbage heads. My iceberg lettuce head is $2 and up, romaine is double what it used to be and cabbage which is another poor man's food is $0.89 a pound and up. Cilantro used to cost $0.49 as did a bunch usually around 7 or 8 green onions. Now there's 5 green onions in a bunch and they cost about double what they used to at around $0.89 and up per bunch. That's another thing that isn't really being mentioned: When Covid hit we had a horrible distribution problem. Certain products like fresh meats were hardly being processed at the plants which caused a huge issue. During that time many restaurants and stores began cutting the amount of an item so that steaks which once weighed 20 ounces were now 14-16 ounces and steaks that were once 8 ounces are now 4-6 ounces. It may not seem like a big deal but the prices raised instead of going down with the portion sizes. The end result is what we have now which is a Texas Roadhouse meal under Trump was a 20 ounce ribeye for around $20 which included two sides. Now that steak is 16 ounces at my local Texas Roadhouses Pikeville, Kentucky, Bristol, Tennessee and Lynchburg Virginia but at least they raised the price to $26+

    • @KeithDCanada
      @KeithDCanada 3 місяці тому

In a world where fresh water supply is becoming a more pressing issue, the prices and availability of items that use the most water in their growing season will see the most price increase.
You have to look at how much water an item uses over it's 'lifetime of growth'.
      Beef - 1850 gallons//lb
      Chocolate (cocoa bean)- 2064 gallons/lb
      Chicken - 519 gallons/lb
      Banana - 94.5 galllons/lb
      Cabbage - 28.5 gallons/lb
as some examples. Meat products are always going o be some of the most water intensive items to produce. Some items, like chocolate, can even outpace them. In comparison, produce, while water intensive, is more reasonable than meat to produce. Location also plays a factor, in that a massive segment of US growing takes place in the US Southwest... an area that is seeing the worst effects of increasing drought conditions as the years move on. Irrigating crops in an area here water is harder to obtain, will skew the resulting prices f producing that product. Overall, inflation is affecting the prices more than it did in 2020, but certain products are skewing higher in that regard (like Eggs - because of a 2023 Avian flu crises).
With each industry... beef, cabbage, etc... you have to look at each one to see why prices specifically might differ from the 'average' inflation'. Beef is going up at a steadier rate, because farmers are shrinking heir herds in response to cost of resources to supply the cattle, severe weather condition increasing, and geo-political conditions growing more stressed. As for why cabbage, specifically, may be skewing higher, I haven't looked into that at this point. In general most produce that uses a high amount of water is going to skew higher than a low-water crop.
I do know that if fresh water keeps becoming a more scarce resource... products like Nuts and Chocolate, may become delicacies that future generations may not commonly see, due to the cost of producing them.

Just so you know, when you corrected the abortion laws you were incorrect. Post birth abortion (infanticide) is a crime and is illegal in all 50 states. When you say 8-9 month abortions are legal you are not wrong, but misleading. Abortions which take place after 21 weeks (less than 1 percent of abortions) are very rare and are usually, not always , to save the mother. Although whether abortion should be available to a mother at risk is a debated topic, it should definitely be stated that most late abortions are for the mothers safety.
