- Chelsey Gomez was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 28 after experiencing fatigue, itching, vertigo and swollen lymph nodes. Initially, doctors dismissed her concerns, attributing her symptoms to stress. However, after a swollen lymph node did not go away, she went to urgent care and was eventually admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In this story, Chelsey highlights the emotional turmoil she faced after learning about her diagnosis, the challenges she had with her first oncologist, who was dismissive and not transparent about treatment options and her allergic reaction to bleomycin, one her chemotherapy drugs.
Despite these difficulties, Chelsey remains determined to educate others about cancer and to prioritize her own happiness and family.

I felt a hard lump in my left breast. I knew it was cancer. It was hard as a rock the size of a pea. I also kept feeling a kind of soreness in my left armpit as well which also made me want to feel carefully around in that area. I went to a doctor asap and she said it’s not cancer because it moved when she did a breast exam and wouldn’t bother to do a biopsy. I just knew she was wrong so I went to see a different doctor and had a mammogram. She had ordered one, but I did not want her to be my doctor for anything. After I had the mammogram, the nurse asked if I could hang around and talk to the doctor. Yes, I said and the doctor said he wanted to do a biopsy! Long story short I had tested positive for cancer and also had cancer in my lymph nodes in my left armpit. It was stage one cancer and that was back in 2005. It’s now 2023! And I am cancer free.
I also had a coworker friend who had a complete hysterectomy because she was told by her doctor she had uterine cancer. After the operation and they did a biopsy on her uterus, it was discovered she had benign 13:33
tumors that were not cancerous. She had the same doctor who told me I didn’t have cancer!
This doctor is a lawsuit waiting to happen. She said I didn’t have cancer, but DID and she told my friend she had cancer but DIDN’T!!!
Trust your gut and always always always get a second opinion!!!
Recently diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma stage T2 Avdocate for your health it’s subjective no one else can feel what you are feeling; especially pain! If a doctor doesn’t listen to you find a new one ASAP!
@ranakeen9884 - That doctor should be dealing with lawsuits right now! She definitely shouldn't be getting away with what she did to you and your friend! Imagine how many other people have suffered under her "care." The thought of this is most disturbing! I am so sorry that you were subjected to such abuse, gaslighting, manipulation, and the list goes on... including being dismissed! That doctor should be ashamed of herself! I'm sorry, but many of us don't have a second chance at wellness and don't really appreciate this "giggly" kind of humor. I can get behind a positive mind set, but there is nothing to giggle about when it comes to cancer.
@@bohochic2459 oh my gosh! Thank you. I agree with everything you said. When I talked about what a terrible doctor she is with my coworker/friend she didn’t even mention a lawsuit and I was going to have surgery, then undergoing chemotherapy, then radiation treatments and to be honest, I was just grateful my new doctor was on top of everything. If my coworker wanted to pursue legal action i absolutely would have done that with her, but I couldn’t drag her through it without her being willing to pursue it with me.
Since then, I have had great doctors who all seem to really care about my health and seem to really care about doing a good job.

Here is the thing about doctors - people, as a general rule, give them all their respect as if they are all-knowing beings. Problem is, many are not that great at their job. They dismiss people's issues as other things, etc. You should frankly NEVER rely on any doctor that is overly optimistic about your health issues.
You r 100% correct. Too many people rely on their doctors to be their health advocates....bad bad bad. U must be your own health advocate through education and reading and research, and being proactive instead of reactive.
You are so right. My Mom is 77 and suddenly has swelling in her ankles and low legs. She has a blocked femoral artery so we've been seeing a vascular surgeon. He said, it's not the worst swelling I've ever seen!!
So what!!?? She has a cardiac history. Maybe she should have her heart checked out?? Lower limb swelling can be heart or kidney related . He couldn't be bothered to send in a cardiologist referral apparently.
Now we go back to her primary, which takes over a week to get in, so we can get the referral .

@@bdlimea7018 I'm sorry your Mom is going through that. I'm glad she has you to advocate for her. Can you email her primary through the clinic portal if her clinic has that? Maybe the primary will put in the order w/o her having to wait. ??? I hope...saying a prayer for you both.

The American sickcare CYST-stem is in deplorable condition. It has been highjacked by the insurance industry, and all treatments are just looked at as expenses.
Unfortunately, Obama care has a clause that tells doctors to not promote treatments in people over 72. They are actually allowed to gaslight patients, lie and withdraw expensive lifesaving procedures.
They are doing it with all ages, as it's more profitable to delay tests and treatment. We as citizens, need to become more informed, and fight back to the medical tyranny being promoted by our corrupt government!!

As a retired RN, I saw a lot of doctors dismiss people’s feelings and symptoms and even dismiss nursing staff’s gut feelings and knowledge. Those are the ones you want to beware of- they are dangerous. Go with your gut feelings and Google all you want.. even if it may not be the case that particular time, it very well could be the case as you found out. I always told my grandmother that any time she was in the hospital to always question the medicines they were giving her and anything else she did not feel good about because if someone is sensitive to their patient’s gut about their own body, I consider them a great medical professional! The medical field doesn’t know all! It changes every day! Thank you for sharing your story. 💜
The gaslighting in the medical field is crazy. For 15 years I’ve been trying to find out what’s wrong!
My dad was diagnosed with the same cancer you have. The Dr gave him 3 to 6 months to live . Fourteen years later, he died in a motorcycle accident. At least we got that extra time with him

What treatments did he take?
It was many years ago, but I knew he had chemotherapy . I stood up and made sure everything was disinfected and cleaned.If anyone even sniffled, they were not allowed in the house. I don't know if it bought him more time, but I would like to think so.

People forget that even those who graduated at the bottom 20% of their class get their medical license. I graduated magna cum laude, and most of my classmates should not have been awarded degrees at all!! 😳
That's frightening that , that's the case! Well it surprised me as well that EMTs only need a few months worth of medical training and they are the ones who must keep you alive before you get to the hospital! Just ridiculous!
@@themagicksociety I've met doctors who "act" like they only had a few months of medical training. Nowadays, the minute you come in with a complaint, they consult "Dr. Google!" I won't even go to them anymore....only way I'll go to the ER is if I'm broken in pieces!! 😏😆

I'm glad to hear that Chelsey is doing well. I don't want to be a downer with my story. My father passed away from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in April 2000. The chemotherapy caused pulmonary adema. The doctor didn't recognize or see anything on the x ray. Unfortunately, my dad's lungs were filling with fluid because of the chemotherapy. My father was seventy nine. The doctor wanted him to have six rounds of chemo. The fourth one really weakened him. He complained to the doctor that his chest felt funny. The fifth one was the one that ended everything. He didn't have any more tumors, so I don't know why the doctor hit him again with chemo after he did so poorly after the 4th. I had encouraged him to keep going, telling him he's almost done, not knowing this could be bad. I had no idea.
I think cancer patients are often gaslighted by doctors and nurses. Their compassion wains. You have to be almost critical and ICU bound before you can get help.
The best doctors are the one's that have been in their patients 👞 shoes, one day when they're fighting for their lives they'll understand and be better doctors I'm sorry
She needs to name and shame that horrible oncologist. Defamation accusations shouldn't apply when professional incompetence is involved.

I commend The Patient Story for allowing you to be candid about your less than stellar experience with your first oncologist. My father had cancer twice. The first time he had a young arrogant doctor who talked down to him. Thankfully, my father stood up to him, got a better doctor, got a competent and caring surgeon, which allowed him to beat cancer the first time and live another 20 years Your story reminded me of this. Thank you.
YES - it is obvious she had a LOUSY experience & needed a different treatment team. I would move somewhere else if she has a relapse - don’t even waste your time with those jerks.
A lot of doctors actually diagnose medical symptoms in women as "psychosomatic", and recommend therapy (and something anti-depressants). Generally, in my opinion, it's better to bring a man with you, go to a female doctor (if you're female), or treat yourself, if possible. I actually personally experienced this myself - they kept saying, "It's psychosomatic, you need therapy and anti-depressants", when I actually did have a disease that was causing all of my symptoms (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). 😒
In my experience, a person will get a more accurate diagnosis 80% of the time if they Google their symptoms before going in to the doctors office.
Apparently one symptom is all the doctors these days have the ability to comprehend at a time. After you've listed the one symptom, they're not interested in hearing any more, they just want to prescribe you a pharmaceutical to treat the symptom you named.
On the other hand, you can tell Google everything you're experiencing and it will spit out at the least, one, or maybe a few options that could be the problem. Then you can peruse all the symptoms that show up with that disease or problem and sometimes you realize that you're experiencing all of them, thereby solving the "what's wrong with me" issue. Then you hit the harder issue: finding a doctor willing to listen to what you think is actually wrong with you based on your symptoms and willing to treat you for that issue. So many doctors appear to get offended at, and be too arrogant to listen to a patient who's been "googling" their symptoms and won't actually consider whether the patient's views have merit. So frustrating!!
Oh Sweetie, you will have a great, long life. My husband was diagnosed at the same age you were. His showed as a spot on his skin
After treatment He was clear for 19 years before it came back. Then it returned 3 more times. He made it to 55, however it’s treated much differently these days. I’ve met a person who had the new protocol and is in his 70’s. You will live to be an old woman with grandchildren 💗
I was diagnosed (after a biopsy and PET scan) with Stage 4B (widespread) Hodgkins lymphoma in 2017 after a really bad bout of shingles ...and continued weight loss. I started ABVD chemotherapy and - after two weeks - my bloods miraculously appeared to be coming back to normal. After 4 weeks I had another PET scan and the cancer had completely disappeared! My haematologist prudently kept me on the 6 month chemo course but removed bleomycin as it can adversely affect your lungs. At the end of the 6 months, I had no chemo for a month, then had another PET scan which again showed no cancer. In 2022, I was signed off as a survivor. I was treated free of charge by our wonderful NHS in the UK. (The only side effects from the chemo are numbness on my fingertips and on the soles of my feet caused by the vinblastine dosage).
That’s terrible, the way you were treated. So callous and cruel and traumatic., I’m glad you have this platform to voice this medical neglect. ❤

Today I was told I need a biopsy for the lump and comes and goes in my neck. I had serious Covid in June 2020. I was hospitalized and almost died. Since then, the swollen lump above my left clavical pops up every few months. I know its Covid related,but there is not much out there on search to help.
I'm pretty scared. I'm an active grandmother.

I pray for continued health and blessings for this beautiful woman and her family. NOBODY should have been traumatized like she was! It makes me so angry! "Gaslighting" in the medical field has become a "standard procedure," and IT NEEDS TO STOP! I just cancelled a CT scan w/contrast dye (for me) this morning because...it is CONTRAINDICATED in patients with CKD, over 60 y/o, with 3 abnormal renal-related lab tests and low eGFR. If I hadn't caught this myself...it could have had tragic consequences.

I have major health issues. Way too much to write about and they are looking for cancer now but I went through my slew of dismissive doctors and it pisses me off. I had to learn to stand up too. But I’m so sorry you went through that. It does make us stronger but it’s unacceptable. I absolutely love your attitude. I do what you do now. I have humor. I have to in order to keep sane. But I’m truly sorry for what you had to go through!
Don't give up! Keep the humor and positive attitude in your life! I'm experiencing health issues as well and have been trying to get a diagnosis for a year now, it can be so frustrating and hopeless when you feel awful but can't find a solid answer. I'm now looking into CIRS as I suspect it might be the reason for all my symptoms. I pray you can find answers and recovery!

I’m so sorry you went through so much and your care was totally mismanaged. I have a different disease. Pulmonary Fibrosis/ Hypertension….I was mis diagnosed but persevered till I got the correct diagnosis (when I was close to dying ). We always need to Be our own advocate, but it’s hard when you were so young…so. Glad you are still here and I know now you will follow your instincts…you have a beautiful family…May God bless you greatly ❤️

To be fair,at your age it is something they don’t look for . I’ve been fighting N.H.L. For 15 years . You can’t always blame the doctor. You are the captain of your body and did what you needed to do . Keep fighting the fight,they came a long way in treatment in the 15 years that I’ll had it .✌🏽❤️

I’m so sorry you had such terrible doctor experiences. Cancer is bad enough without callous comments such as “sounds like lymphoma, good luck” and “you have seven months”. What a way to rob a person of any little peace of mind they’ve managed to hold on to. Yes. Words like this are traumatizing and they still hurt years and years later even after a person has been declared healthy. They can feel like a curse in the ears of a patient. Where’s the compassion and humanity?

I've been in a hospital for 11 days now and I'm waiting for a biopsy after a PET scan showed my lymph nodes in my chest, neck and armpits were highlighted, as well as my hips, spine and a part of my cervix. They think it's lymphoma but my cervix showing up in the scan throws them off so I'm also waiting for emergency gynacology. I'm petrified it's cancer and the haematologists seem quite certain it is. I'm only 24 ffs. The worst bit is it took a whole year of my symptoms being ignored before a doctor listened and said "hang on, that's not right."

Sorry to hear your story. Your doctor was simply terrible. I had stage 4 classic Hodgkins Lymphoma. My oncologist discussed all the options with me and even gave me an opportunity to freeze my sperm before treatment. I didn’t know anything about lymphoma before treatment and I’m glad I met my consultant. The NHS is so person centred. I was treated with ABVD, the Bleomycin was dropped after 2 months cos I made a complete recovery and I went to complete AVD for the next 4 months.
Thank u fo= sharing ur story. I'm getting a biopsy to check to make sure I don't have lymphoma which some of my specialist think I have. I got all the symptoms n been suffering for a while, but I got alot of different conditions which is already hard to deal with, now I'm anemic n the doctor stopped my iron infusion because my blood pressure was high even on blood pressure meds,muscle relaxers, pain meds,n anxiety meds so my blood pressure shouldn't be high at all or my heart rate. I still need a colostomy bag cause of rectal prolapse surgery came undone. U r all so brave, I kno I've had symptoms for a long time n doctors just don't listen , finally my rheumatologist sent me to general surgery so they can check, I just want answers even I it is lymphoma so I can continue to fight.
Is very emotional your medical history, I really am glad for you now, about doctor's attitude, same is in Belgium,, even worse, they are very uninterested about the patients, here most of Dr doesn't give any explanations to ppls,.... I wish you all the best. 🌹

What I have experienced is that doctors do not have a sense of urgency equal to patient's extreme anxiety about their condition. We have to wait, and wait. I realize they are so busy, so there needs to be some insentive to recruit more people into the nursing and doctoral field!

This is informative.
I work in health care and it irks me that some providers have no sense of empathy or understanding. They need to learn to treat people with respect. They go to school for many years but miss learning the importance of establishing proper rapport with their patients. It’s sad that there are patients that shy away from such demeanor and this may ultimately affect them. I advise patients if you feel unsatisfied or intimidated get another opinion yes but also speak to the patient experience office of the hospital.
I wish we could have had my mom visit us before she started her cancer treatment. She lived in a different state and right before she was diagnosed, she had planned to visit--booked her flight and everything. Well, I guess her dr told her she had to start treatment right away and we never got to see her somewhat normal again (the chemo did a number on her). Sad

I have also compared the pain of my bone marrow biopsy to natural childbirth! I told my doctor afterwards never again without sedation or something similar and until he has one he isn’t allowed to tell me it’s not that painful. It was awful.

Good heavens your doctor was a sadist!!! I have IgM MGUS and my oncologist has promised me that when I do have to have a bone marrow biopsy that I can have "mothers milk" that does knock you out. I hope you got a new doctor.

Doctors really don’t know what they’re doing or really care. I’ve seen so many videos of misdiagnosed cancer because of laziness!!!
Can't hospitals provide patient advocates who DO understand and can translate or explain what patients need to hear - if the docs won't?

I have many of these symptoms except the itching. I went to my doctor and I was told it was stress and that because the swollen lymph node is less than 2cm, they will not look at it any further. I was told to sleep more, drink more water, exercise, and monitor the size of the lymph node. I just got the Prenuvo full body MRI scan. I get my results in 2 to 3 weeks 🤞🏼.
What were the results?
@@user-pt3bv3jl3v the only concerning thing that came up was my liver in enlarged and I have a laceration on my spleen. Nothing came up concerning my lymph nodes. Thankfully the lymph node has not increased in size but I am still monitoring it.

I remember looking back when my former gynecologist did colposcopy without even discussing the option to sedate. No bedside manner at all. He even scolded me in the middle of the procedure, “you moved! I told you try not to move.”
When thinking about it now, I wanted to say this really bad to him, “what if I scrap the inside of your penis without numbing you or sedating you? If you don’t scream in pain, then let’s do the cervic scraping without any sedation.”
I agree with you, Chelsey, there are options to make us as patients as comfortable as possible during medical Procedure! Doctors are not God. But good doctor is the one who advocate for you and work with your pain tolerance level not their own! ❤ don’t ever feel stupid asking about options from your own research.
I’ve had 4 bone marrow biopsies 2 under sedition because it’s barbaric to have it done without most painful procedure I’ve ever experienced without sedation.
It's horrible! The Dr's Nurses are just awful about returning results phone calls I usually end up having to call my doctor's office to get my results for pretty much everything at this point otherwise I end up having to wait several days and we all know how awful it can be in the thoughts that go through your head when you're waiting for results I just don't think there is any respect left anymore people have this i-don't-care attitude and it's really sad
I'm currently waiting for an urgent callback. I have fell bad for at least 3 years. I have got to the point when I have swollen lymphnodes so often, have circular rashes on my arms, I have oedema, pain and tingling in my left leg that is travelling up, lower back and abdomen pain, shoulder and neck pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, brain fog and a 3 week ongoing twitch in my right eye. I have been asking for help for years. I'm only 30, surely I shouldn't feel this way? They keep saying it's all because I'm overweight. Which I am overweight but I'm not THAT bad for me to feel this way. They've done blood tests for allergies to explain my stomach issues but nothing. Haven't heard a thing back so apparently there's nothing wrong. I apparently have a folic acid deficiency so they've told me to take folic acid, which I do. But nothing else. I'm feeling worse everyday but I have 2 children so I won't stop fighting.
What part of Florida are your from? I live in Boca Raton and most of the doctor's here are real bad.

I had a biopsy for a lump on my breast. I found out it was negative only when I called the nurse to ask why my breast was leaking black goo. She said that’s normal and mentioned that I didn’t have in an offhand way. She thought the doctor had called. He did…3 days later. Needless to say I’m not confident that the test was right especially considering I had a raging infection in that breast that took two weeks of antibiotics to clear it. And I still have the huge cyst in my breast which apparently he’s not going to do anything about.
That black goo is the imaging dye they inject so the biopsy will be easier to see under the microscope. I too have a cyst which has doubled in size and since I did have breast cancer back in 2005 I was worried about it, but there isn’t anything they can do about cysts. I apparently have a whole bunch of these things in my right breast now! Sorry you went through that with so little information from your doctor. It should be mandatory in medical school they go through a bedside manner course.

a small lump in my breast ( it I’d painful af)..I went to hospital the doctor said she doesn’t feel anything , but went to an ultrasound sound which came back negative…….. went to a second doctor same day , found the lump hidden somewhere but quickly dismissed it and gave me painkillers……….he tells me the ultrasound couldn’t pick it coz it’s not deadly …..I don’t know why I feel some type of way …….Do you need the coloring to see the lump in an ultrasound or what ???

I have been going to doctors of every kind you can imagine for 34 years with the Palestra of symptoms in this 34 years never an answer to my condition. I finally figure it out on my own that I have severe neck, injuries, and my entire spine is all messed up from a motorcycle accident that I’ve told doctors about many times, and it was always dismissed. And doctors have no bedside manners today. You will literally be laughed at. I’ve been laughed at many times by the so-called professionals.
The medical field terrifies me because theres so many ppl in the bealtb field that have no business being in that field.
Of course, some doctors have a better bedside manner and are better educated than others. But it’s important to remember that they are human just like us which means that there is both good and bad within them. I have always felt that doctors are only as good as you force them to be. Most of my doctors would tell you that I am a pain in the butt to deal with, but I get my needs met and that’s all that matters. I have a really good team of doctors now, and it took me 40 years to put them together. They still make mistakes, and I still question every decision they make. In the end, my well-being is in my hands. My advice, trust your gut, do your own research, always get a second opinion. Most importantly, place your faith in God only. Anything I go to a Dr\PA for the quickest answer is stress. No kidding it's America! Fast pace, extremely expensive, and doctors don't listen. We are a number that's it. Stage 4 cancers and maybe they agree with what our body is already telling us. But it's not about us. It's about crunching numbers $$

I also had the itchy legs and feet (my GP thought it was restless leg syndrome), then the tiredness and the lump on my neck.
Positive experience from my cancer: The care, patience and compassion from the nurses and pharmacy staff were truly inspiring. They all deserve raises.
Negative experience from my cancer: A rich businessman who volunteered to drive me to treatment (I had to go another city and didn't drive) told me "You could have worn something a little nicer." when I got in his car in a tracksuit for chemo. A nurse told me they've heard stuff like that about him before and that he was a volunteer who volunteered for himself and not to help others.
Also, repressed/disassociated memories of childhood abuse popped up from the chemo (ABVD) so that was super fun to deal with. =-)
Bone marrow biopsies don't hurt if done well. Had mine done by a nurse practitioner talked me through the whole procedure, which included a couple of ouches that only lasted seconds.
I was terrified to have mine done after watching youtube videos of the procedure but when it was done I hardly felt a thing.
This totally depends on each individual. Some are lucky and feel minor discomfort, and others are in extreme agony unfortunately.
If you are Tired of being a Doctor, please Quit, if not please advocate for training on how to speak to patients, because your patients deserve that first and foremost from you.

I have all the symptoms including a huge lump on the left side of my neck but can't afford the $450.00 initial 20 min consult with an oncologist, guess I will wait to see where it goes. The only thing that medical professionals care about is the money.
Come to india...you will get the cheapest and high quality treatments

So sorry you had such a horrible doctor doing the bone marrow biopsy and telling you that you had 7 moths to live. Most doctors are very empathetic and encourage a positive attitude, he should be struck off, many other people probably have had a bad experience with him also. So happy you are alright now.
