At 29:01 drummer Nick Mason breaks the drumstick in his left hand, tosses it over his left shoulder, then reaches over his legs to the right to get a new stick without missing a beat. You don't hear it when it happens, he just plays through. I have been listening to Pink Floyd since their first hit song played on the radio in 1967. The Greatest Band Ever.
If you watch the song “One Of These Days I’m Going To Cut You Into Little Pieces” during an epic drum piece the drummer loses his drumstick during a very frantic moment, he doesn’t miss a beat as he grabs another stick and the beat goes on.
He also does a super cool bounce flip catche during the first Gilmore solo.... so good...xxx love it to death. As this will be played at my funeral for sure! xx
I was at a Pink FLoyd gig once and they finished and went off, then came back for the encore and as soon as we heard the "plink" of the piano the venue went mad as we knew they were doing Echoes as an encore !!!! All 24 minutes of it !!! (Since then I have seen them again doing The Wall).
This is one of the best live gigs we can ever see.... no frills, no big support or lighting, just four wizards rocking together. This song started the classic Floyd sound. October 1971, four days shooting. Released in 1972 as a 1 hour art house movie. They stipulated during negotiations that the footage be real live only. Playing to the hordes of souls in the spirit world. Masterpiece and it will last as long as humanity does....somehow:) xx
If you want to see it elevated as you say try the 2006 version live in Gdansk! It was the last time David Gilmour will ever play it because it was the last time Richard Wright was alive to play it! It's also one of the best live versions of this song I've heard!!!! I mean even if you don't do it for your channel just do it for yourself because it's worth watching!!! Also this is more like a piece of music as in Mozart or Beethoven and I believe something like this is in the same category! Pink Floyd was never interested in making a quick pop song to make a buck, they were always more interested in creating music!!! And the closure of this song is Richard Wright and David Gilmour having a conversation through their guitar & keyboards as they come to a Y in the road saying see you next time!
3 of the 4 guys performing at Pompeii (filmed in October 1971) also performed 23 years later at the PHENOMENAL Pulse Concert in 1994. 45 years after Pompeii, in 2016, David Gilmour returned to Pompeii to play before a packed house.
Imagine being in your early twenties & doing this 😮 Highly recommended “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”…one of their other masterpieces! Studio versions I - V and VI - IX. It’s about their founder, Syd Barrett (lost to mental health issues and too much acid). 🔥🔥🔥
How could I miss this video of you, when next to Nightwish Pink Floyd is my absolute favorite band. In 2016 I was lucky enough to see David Gilmour live in the amphitheater in Pompeii. A horrible place in history - a magical concert with a terrific David! My grandpa always says listening to Pink Floyd is being high without smoking a joint.
They are the only band that has ever played at Pompeii in that amphitheatre that is a 2000-year old Roman amphitheater. It was uncovered about 100 to 150 years ago. Also David Gilmour played again live in Pompeii in 2016 so being the lead singer and guitarist for Pink Floyd, Pink Floyd is still the only group that has been allowed to play there! Also in 1971 when they did this there was no power there and they had to run miles of extension cords to have power for the concert. They only had three or four days to film and they basically sat around for two days waiting for power which they finally got on the third day after running those miles of extension cords!
They were the only band to ever play at this ancient amphitheater in Pompeii. No crowd here except for the stage hands and roadies and camera people. David Gilmour did actually play in front of an audience in this exact same place in 2016. He had to go through so many hoops to make it happen. Like hours before the show they were still negotiating with the city peeps for what they wanted to do. I would suggest watching one of those performances for a comparison. This particular song, which in my mind has become a part of Pompeii's history, was not performed because the keyboardist (and very first vocalist who sings before David) had passed away, and David always said this song was a musical conversation between the two of them. If you watch again, or listen again, you'll hear how they play off each other. So the song was not performed again after I believe Gadansk, Poland.... in what 2006 or 2007? Someone will correct me. That version of Echoes is also worth a watch. Really the only two live versions of the song that you should watch. Welcome to the Pink Floyd journey!
1971, I was 11, I watched the video on BBC1 or BBC2 and it was shown after 9pm I remember that much, 🙄 one of my older brothers had his own prog rock band and was a big fan of Floyd, he bought me the album for my birthday ❤ fast forward 1974 I'm 14 and my birthday prezzie off him was ...Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon tour, Empire theatre Liverpool UK, (my hometown) AND they did Echoes for the encore ❤❤❤❤❤ 👍
Floyd was loved by hell's angels I use to hang out with and whenever I went to hell's angels parties Floyd, Rush, motorhead amongst other metal and rock bands was the main jukebox playlist lol.. Rush are another inventive band I suppose you could call them the progressive rock bands of there day.
I reckon a lot of the music from the 70's and early 80's was specifically written to go onto an album, a story or journey, that was made to be listened to via headphones in a darkened bedroom with your eyes shut, possibly whilst under the influence! Even early Queen seems to fall into this category too! Speaking of which, they are quite good live 😁
Congrats on discovering this masterpiece, Daniel! Pink Floyd’s 70’s output easily ranks among the best music ever made. There combination of Gilmour and Waters was truly magical. Too bad they are not on good terms nowadays. This is truly ageless stuff. Check out Shine on you crazy diamond!🤘🍻
Wow, this takes me right back to when I first saw it in my uncle Joe's flat on TV. I've been a Floyd fan for just about 40 years now. I know of no other band that as you say, take you on a journey like they can. When you are in the right frame of mind, they put you into the FN holodeck. Their music is timeless, it never loses it's power to me. With out any chemical additions (though they don;t hurt) I am always, transported, transfixed and transformed by this. It is musical bliss that never gets old. Great choice!
Daniel, you heard squeaky toys. I heard the souls of the buried dead crying out. Been a Floyd fan since my early teens. May I also recommend Careful with that axe, Eugene from the Ummagumma album.
🤣🤣🤣 I've just remembered something, as I said previously, my brother got me the Meddle album for my 11th birthday 1971..I was BUZZIN..😊😊😊😊 (extremely excited in Liverpool) I ran over to the "radiogram" and put it on, the minute it started playing we heard the (not so) delicate voice of the mother, screaming "YOU CAN GET THAT SHITE OFF RIGHT NOW" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
David Gilmour live in London 'Remember That Night' has a great version of Echoes. Plus, a very special guest at the end to do a couple of Floyd tracks.
Santana were flying at Woodstock musically. It was incredible. But, "I'm Going Home", by Ten Years After (at Woodstock) is the only live performance I like as much as this from Floyd, and The Song Remains The Same concert from Zeppelin. I would include Delicate Sound of Thunder, The Wall tour, and the first album from Jane's Addiction (it's live), but those were from the 80s. Still, these are all comparable, to me.
Pink Floyd are their OWN genre. Their music gives you the time to sit and listen and absorb the music as it goes along. This is the best ROCK GROOVE in music history! If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times...when you world turns to shit and you've had a crappy day, you come home, pour a scotch (or similar), or glass of red, drink that offing it down. Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one and go turn off all the lights. Put this, or any Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!
I think the idea was suggested to them by an influential fan, who helped facilitate the red tap. Played here again 45 years later, with an audience of very lucky people.
Great reaction. The Floyd is a very deep rabbit hole, indeed. They are a genre unto themselves incorporating elements of rock, jazz, blues, funk, country, soul, classical/orchestral, folk, and more. ... Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts 1-9 would be my strong recommendation for your next exposure. It's a journey in the same way Echoes is. ...Then, you'll be ready for Darkside. (Listen to the ENTIRE album. Record it or not, edit as necessary, but trust us on this...) 😊
When a new Pink Floyd album came out the first listen was like a movie. I would just close my eyes and sit listening to it and it takes you on a journey. Anything from Meddle to The Division bell does this. They are all amazing albums.
If you watch the song “One Of These Days I’m Going To Cut You Into Little Pieces” during an epic drum piece the drummer loses his drumstick during a very frantic moment, he doesn’t miss a beat as he grabs another stick and the beat goes on.
Mid 70s, had a few friends from the States staying with us in London, Beautiful Sunny Saturday morning, eventually got ourselves together and made our way to Wembley stadium....Nils Lofgren...AC/DC....The Who....and as the sun was setting, The Floyd came on....Peace.
I've also seen (on UA-cam) Echoes over the end of the SciFi movie 2001 A Space Odyssey Where the "sound scape" matches up with the trippy colour scenes as Dave Bowman encounters the monolith orbiting Jupiter "my god its full of stars" is a perfect fit😉
Aye mate, enjoyed that cheers. A friend and me went to 'PULSE' concert in 1994, both of us dropped two LSD trips each on the way up to the venue, like you do. Best night out I've ever had, my hair still hasn't grown back, pulled it all out by the end of the concert, you should do a reaction to all the songs they did that night, really fantastic talent all round, three cheers to you thanks
I saw this at all night cinema in London in the mid seventies, think it was shown all over, the pink floyd studios in north london were opposite my friends apartment so we got used to seeing them coming and going at all hours of the day and night.
Hi , not long been on your channel ! Enjoying your reaction ,going back on some of your other tunes ! welcome to the Pink Floyd rabbit hole ,enjoy the trip . You might want to try " Hawkwind" very trippy , cheers
There was a video/ small movie! This was the sound track....of a massive wave..inside the tube...its "amazeballs!" They do it to me too...watch Gilmors hands when he plays guitar....respect...effortless...pure...love & light 💜🏴🌻
The Echoes of the doom to come. The pre-eruption signs they didn't take stock of or understand. These aren't just ruins....but THE ruins. Pompeii in the shadow of Mr. Vesuvius. And now...the Echoes of the all the lost souls. The acoustics in the arena were better than anywhere else in the former city. For all the grandeur and luxury that we think is great and that we are proud of and take for granted....can come to nothing by a force greater than you.
In 1972 you had to go to the movies to see it. The only way you saw a band back then was at a concert or a live concert at the cinema.Led Zeppelin,The Beatles and The Who also put out movies.
I listen to this track on you tube they had inspired tool and radiohead and many others Gilmore , it was not exactly live it was done in a studio then they went to pompeii to do the video.
You're absolutely right, and anyone who's ever walked through the ruined city and seen the replicas of the dead knows exactly what you're trying to say. In addition, this is not a colloseum but an amphitheater.
You should watch the whole movie! The concert at Pompeii lasted for a good hour - several of their standards of the time bookended by Echoes part 1 and 2. Echoes and One Of These Days were only released a month later in November 1971 on their album "Meddle". All the video releases had a speed issue (too high pitched) which was corrected here - enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/acISslQlbg8/v-deo.html
Dude, what do you mean they're performing in front of no-one... the amphitheater is packed with people, maaan! 🚬 All those who died during the volcano eruption were there, enjoying the music, maaan! 🚬 Entrance was free, maaan! 🚬 You can hear them here 👉17:45 and here 👉31:49 , maaan! 🚬 ... those are not squeaky toys, those are ECHOES from beyond, maaan ! 🚬 I seriously need to stop 🚬 shit! Not good for me, maaan! 🚬
Floyd is not a jam band. The music is 100% composed. With live performances, like all great musicians, things can waiver, but it's composed music. Grateful Dead is completely different, and is more like Miles Davis than like Pink Floyd. Equally brilliant, but completely different. There aren't many artists, of any medium, that can transport you as fast and as seamless to another place than The Fllyd. Pink Floyd is the amalgamation of English counter culture, American Blues, pure musical skill, and I'd be lying if I knew anything more. I do know Roger Waters had the ability to be inspired by just about anything at any moment. He was a sponge and a wonderful bass player. He just had this touch. Gilmour was Davinici with 6 strings. Wright was Van Gough with 88 keys, and Mason was a minimalist with two sticks... but nobody could do it better and no other drummer would even fit with Pink Floyd. They were perfect. Syd Barrett had to happen or else Floyd would never have become what they are.
About 5mins in before they start singing, they just don't care. Its like this is us. Strap in we are going to take you on a journey. It would have been funny if you cut it off just as they started to sing 😂 bloody copyright he he.
Credit where credit is do... thanks for not going totally top 40. These bands have huge bodies of work that's never played. Some shouldn't fair enough but there are gems out there if you know where to dig. Dig it ?
To be fair the whole song in its entirety is its "best parts" but im glad you understand that i had to pause at some points. This is the bane of listening to a song on youtube at least on my end. Much love Sebastien. And i greatly appreciate your time.

Check out the whole gig and see if you can see where drummer looses stick and doesn't loose a beat!!!.amazing. Adrian maben(dir)
They were the exact OPPOSITE of a jam band - their process is so meticulous, every note, every sound is there for a reason. Awesome reaction man
Echoes is not a song, It's life experience.
Echoes is a special 'piece'. For me, it's 1972 again, and travelling home for Christmas from Lancaster after my first term at University.
A masterpiece.
They can take you to places like not many other bands can.
They're one of the greatest bands ever.

The Beatles and Queen can argue over second place. The G.O.A.T are here
Queen anytime over the beatles!
Enjoyed your reaction man, i've loved Pink Floyd for about 45 years now, and this live gig is for me the best thing they ever did✌

Sorry!!!! Your reaction is brilliant.
every ghost came
I don't know if it is true or not, but it was suggested that there was Whale song in the middle of this.
I first listened to this in '75. Brings back great memories
This and Santana at Woodstock are the best live performances ever
Santana at Woodstock is next level❤
Santana were flying at Woodstock musically. It was incredible. But, "I'm Going Home", by Ten Years After (at Woodstock) is the only live performance I like as much as this from Floyd, and The Song Remains The Same concert from Zeppelin.

There are rock bands and there is Pink Floyd. A planet of their own.
Great reaction, my favorite band, true artists.

That was such an American first reaction - 'Who did they pay off'!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Record it or not, edit as necessary, but trust us on this...)
😊
Agreed!!!!!!!!!!!
Pink Floyd does not adhere to a genre, they just make music.
Beautiful, beautiful music that transcends genres.
When a new Pink Floyd album came out the first listen was like a movie. I would just close my eyes and sit listening to it and it takes you on a journey. Anything from Meddle to The Division bell does this. They are all amazing albums.

50 years. They have NO bad songs.
They are Psychedelic Rock.

😂 No dolphins were harmed in the making of this recording. Definitely state altering music. 😵💫🫨🤪
new subs 😎👍 next long song from Pink Floyd - Dogs ( with lyric ) = 17 min song . 🎸🎶🎶
Welcome Gerry!!!

Hi , not long been on your channel ! Enjoying your reaction ,going back on some of your other tunes ! welcome to the Pink Floyd rabbit hole ,enjoy the trip . You might want to try " Hawkwind" very trippy , cheers
There’s a UA-cam channel called Polyphonic that has an excellent breakdown of this song 💯
Hopefully the souls of those lost during the eruption witnessed this greatness.
There was a video/ small movie! This was the sound track....of a massive wave..inside the tube...its "amazeballs!" They do it to me too...watch Gilmors hands when he plays guitar....respect...effortless...pure...love & light 💜🏴🌻
Crystal voyager documentary, about a surfing cameraman. Last 20 odd minutes is Echoes through his camera lens. EPIC
Such an amazing piece of music! Would have been great to see Spencer react to this as well, would be interesting to see his thoughts too
Pink Floyd always had top shelf equipment. Check out those mic's 🔥
But....the song is about how sometimes....in the turning of a day ...all that you knew, all that you loved, is wiped out. Including yourself. And never saw it coming.
Yup, watching it from the UK pretty stoned. Love your vids and.....Oh its in Pompie 😂. Keep being genuine 👍
Never seen you smile so much, it was involintary
Reacts to other live version of this song by David Gilmour in Gdansk, the experience is also very amazing
"24mins? Oh, dear."
*24mins later*
"Dear lord, please don't end"
They are playing to the dead audience of 2000 years ago.
Oh hell yeah brotha pop a couple gummies and have it on in the background while you cook some dinner it's the chillest mood you'll ever feel!
Vero...a Pompei solo i Pink Floyd hanno suonato e poi nel 2016 David Gilmour è tornato per un suo concerto da solista e la sua band di supporto
I listen to this track on you tube they had inspired tool and radiohead and many others Gilmore , it was not exactly live it was done in a studio then they went to pompeii to do the video.
They're in Their 20s. I was 13 when I saw them in 73.
Hope you get your buddy too watch this.
We built this city on Rock and Roll. Well this channel 😂
Hahahahahaha no crowd I can't tell u off for not saying LOOK AT THE CROWD MAN
Lmfao!!!!
Sorry, but they are not some ordinary ruins, that's Pompei 😊
I wrote Pompei because that's how we spell it in italian 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
You're absolutely right, and anyone who's ever walked through the ruined city and seen the replicas of the dead knows exactly what you're trying to say.
In addition, this is not a colloseum but an amphitheater.
I hope that you got a return ticket ! Enjoy the Pink Floyd Journey .
If you want butter try the studio version.

watching at BLACK METAL TEENS HEARING PINK FLOYD
These guys didn't just show up at practice and throw together some guitar riffs and drum licks that's for sure.
We going to talk during the whole song?
Pulse 1994!!
Dig it ?
Regarding your squeaky toy reference…They were not without a sense of humour.
…Although this always evokes seagulls, for me, given the lyris’ setting.
Always cutting the song at his best parts!!!
To be fair the whole song in its entirety is its "best parts" but im glad you understand that i had to pause at some points. This is the bane of listening to a song on youtube at least on my end. Much love Sebastien. And i greatly appreciate your time.
