So after watching this I went to the shop and played a bit with a few gouges. Ķnowing that a #9 is a half circle it got me thinking, it's just how many stabs with a gouge does it take to complete a circle will give you what "pie wedge" it corresponds to. To clarify I found that both my #7 gouges are in the 1/5 of a circle. My #5's are 1/8. Also found that (and I'm going from memory so I may be a millimeter or two off) the circle made with the 5/12 was damn near exact to the 7/18. Very interesting Mary - thanks for sharing!

It’s only geometry? And no I didn’t pay close enough attention in school. So... thank you for sharing.

Missing gouge? HA! A new black smithing project! Have not carved wood with anything other that a pocket knife, but I think this could be a fun build your tools craft your art type projects.

Think you might mean length of circumference when you say radius-

It's all in the math. Just gotta figure out the numbers to decode the radii patterns.

But.... 5 out of 4 people have difficulty with math!

@@backwoodstrails excellent comment. My question as a math teacher is...
Is that difficulty with the math itself, or a mental block because this society has built the myth that math is difficult? Just about everything in life was difficult at some point. Almost everyone who puts in the work to practice math gets it and can do better than 9 out of 10 of their peers. It is typically a work ethic issue. Yes, math does come easier to some than to others, but until you get into Calculus 2 and higher the average brain can "get it" through practice. Even the higher levels are attainable if you practice. Understanding it is the difficult part. It's all about following steps, just like baking a cake from a box.
