Thank You for the video. I started an air layer on a Japanese Maple back in Mid April and the roots air looking great. My question is when would be the best time to separate it from from the Mother tree?
Awesome, great job! The best time would be when 1) it's got enough roots developes to sustain the all branches and leaves above and 2) it's got enough time to settle as a separate tree. Assuming #1 is good, I would separate it before mid fall.
Thank for the video! It's really great content. Got a question, I recently got a JM from a nursery and was planning on repotting it into a training pot since it has really bad soil right now. But I also want to take an airlayer to reduce its size a bit. Is it ok to airlayer a recently transplanted tree or should I choose one of both things? Thanks for your videos, they really help!
Thanks! I would slip pot it with some fresh soil around it without touching too many roots now then air layer next year :)
My Shishishagara started to root but I think all the leaves have dried up from the sun. Is it done for?
It depends, as long as the branches/buds are still alive, it may push new leaves. Watch for overwatering when the tree does not have any leaves.
Just curious. What is the latest time that you could do air-layering in PNW? In California, people seem to be able to air-layer maple trees pretty much all year around, well maybe not in winter times.
From my experience, the ideal time is usually between March-June during the growing season.
