I'm with you, nate - how can any one guitarist possibly be the "greatest". There is only one legit "The Greatest", and his name is Muhammad Ali (he is not a guitarist).
Trying to follow the form through Fleck's solo, not for the faint of heart. I like to think thats why Martino was smiling, at the sheer brilliance of Fleck's tones. Love the denouement after his solo too.
Wow, that's what virtuosity looks like..... all around. It's subtle, but man the way Rayford steps it back and lets Gerald keep time and then they dial it right back in under the soloists was tiiiiight..... a lot of lessons from the masters in this track.
HOORAY!! The First VIDEO, and only I suspect, where I did NOT feel ashamed of the Guitarist compared to the Wind/Keyboards, and it takes a Friggin GENIUS that Pat Martino is, so hes not really comparable to the rest, and this is one of his trademark songs. Thank You all especially Pat that can make a jazz solo as harmonically interesting as a top Wind/Keyboardist on the GUITAR, unfortunately my weapon of choice
+jay dutch Pat is a life survivor who had to basically reinvent himself. I'm sure you know his story.I have borrowed more than a few of his lines, and he was a big influence on me. I remember him playing "On the Stairs"....and all of the standards.I think he handled all that life threw at him quite well.
Yes, he was. I met Pat many years ago in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase and a few times after that. He was always the most gracious, kind and caring person and always took the time to speak with you. He is missed.
Gary Smith It’s still rhythm changes in C but heavily disguised. If you follow the AABA structure in your head while listening you’ll hear it. Also, I hear the banjo play a lot of C dorian over the A section.
yeah, they're following the same form (AABA) but doing the A sections as just C minor modal instead of the usual changes. then the bridge is the same as the original but with tri-tone subs: Ab7-Db7-Gb7-B7
+carl richardson Wow. I hope that's not true. I saw him at Dizzy's in Pittsburgh in 1996 with my old girlfriend. He was fantastic. Put on a great show.
Pat Martino became the world's greatest Jazz Guitarist, not ONCE, ....... but TWICE in a lifetime!
He was destined to be the greatest.
chill with that. how is he the best? theres just too many greats for you to say that.
Pat is my favorite Jazz guitarist period.
Joe Fusco no doubt about it!
I'm with you, nate - how can any one guitarist possibly be the "greatest". There is only one legit "The Greatest", and his name is Muhammad Ali (he is not a guitarist).
Bela Fleck has taken the banjo to places it’s never been!
Wow!!
Pat Martino & Fleck😮
Unbelievable session👍🎩👍
Pat Martino is simply in rarefied air: He is justifiably one of the greatest who ever picked up this instrument!
He's near Joe Pass, who WAS the best jazz improviser bar NONE! Joe was the closest thing to "perfection" on guitar! No exaggeration whatsoever!
@@newmoon54 I agree, but I also think Wes was the only person more melodic than Joe, while of course not nearing him in technique
As far as I know he was the only one who did it twice!
@@bertpeijmen6960 Pat died on November 1st at age 77. RIP to one of the genuine titans of jazz.
@@newmoon54 There's no perfection. I like Pat's style better.
Pat Martino...An American treasure.
So fortunate to have watched this on BETJ as a kid
What a session! Martino and Fleck

Wow, that's what virtuosity looks like..... all around. It's subtle, but man the way Rayford steps it back and lets Gerald keep time and then they dial it right back in under the soloists was tiiiiight..... a lot of lessons from the masters in this track.
This takes my breath away ...wow!

Pat was among the other greats who actually did create Jazz Standards. He WAS Jazz. He's the legend's legend!

You're totally right!!!
Dude, right?! As soon as I saw this...
Great Scott, I think that banjo is in tune!
Flat out WOW!! Great stuff....very cool to see Bela included.
Alternate title for this video: "A Room Full of Monsters"
Pat Martino. OMG!!!!!
I’m so sad that Pat Martino is deceased. He was such a wonderful person.
Yes, he was. I met Pat many years ago in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase and a few times after that. He was always the most gracious, kind and caring person and always took the time to speak with you. He is missed.
Wow, the whole band was bring it! Brilliant playing.
One of Mr Martino's unique and great calling cards ! @ 2:09

Love these jams......crazy good......Pat Martino and Bella Fleck ? Really ? Don't know who puts these out but I really enjoy them.
pat martino fucking kills
The rhythm section during the trumpet solo was grooving so hard ugh
Bella is a beast
Pat Martino is the man! The entire band is smoking hot. Dig Bela's Banjo.
Pat Martino is a great improvisational guitarist.
You guys see Pat Martino (awesome guitarist) but I see Ricky Braun spitting hot fire through the bell of his horn
Great performance
Sweet jamz brothas
splendid !!!!
R.I.P. Pat
Wow, love this!
SICK!
I saw Rayford with Stanley Clarke and Robert Brookins in Germany during the late 80's!
Wow, the solos were nuts!
Mind blown...
Bela looks like he's having a blast. Like Sh*&t this is great.
great sound
THIS IS FUCKING GOLD
Try playing along with this. They lost me after the head. Just amazing players.
WOW!
PAT MARTINO ? : C'est carrément le "frère de WES" mais au "médiator terrible"". QUEL GUITARISTE MERVEILLEUX !
I like when he goes full highway star at 2:09
Oleo is a tube written by Sonny Rollins and is based of Rhythm Changes. After the head did they skip the changes and go modal???
Gary Smith It’s still rhythm changes in C but heavily disguised. If you follow the AABA structure in your head while listening you’ll hear it. Also, I hear the banjo play a lot of C dorian over the A section.
They keep playing the changes.

Bela Fleck man, cool dude....Great Jam!
Rick played it here!
at 1:39 i thought he was gonna do it again
you got tricked
What kind of scales are those there using. Real out there but very awesome
Wow the guitarist with the strange guitar played the best solo.
Are you talking about the banjo player lol
5:41- Pat Martino is not believing what he's hearing from Bela Fleck on banjo.
It's a banjo the musician is Bela Flek
BELA
0:35
Is that a midi electric banjo???
Tha electric banjo
he doesn't need dots on the neck...
Michael Boren Dots? We no need no steenking dots!!
Dots on the fretboard aren't necessary unless you're keeled over looking at the top. The side dots are just fine by themselves.
Didn't Gerald Veasley pass?
+carl richardson Wow. I hope that's not true. I saw him at Dizzy's in Pittsburgh in 1996 with my old girlfriend. He was fantastic. Put on a great show.
My mistake. I was thinking of Wayman Tisdale, the pro basketball player who also played bass.
+carl richardson Gotcha. Ya, I was really bummed when he passed.
I bet Take #2 was even more interesting than this...! Which has got to take 'some doing'....!!!
What is the chord progression on solos
???
Bb Rhythm changes
@@londonduszynski3518 and the intro please?
It sounds like the intro is 1 chord, though I’m not sure which one.
They reharmonized the entire A section to a dorian C minor vamp
Love Pat Martino but he is starting to play the same licks every time I hear him.😕
No sound !!!
