I love that you warned us you’d chatter the entire time, then fell almost entirely silent. Which is the best way to experience any of Tim’s stuff for the first time.
The Sydney Opera House Executive and Trust chose the right man for the task. Australia has a long history of tall poppy syndrome clad within a discourse of egalitarianism and a “fair go” for all. We’ve come a long way in the last half century toward a society where difference, in all its colours, shapes and forms, is celebrated rather than knocked down.
Jorn Utzon was the Danish architect who won the tender. With such a unique build it started running over budget almost immediately as engineers and workers got to grips with such a one-off design. There was a popular revolt against the cost, and the government decided to dump Utzon’s design for the interior, including the theatres careful acoustic designs. Jorn Utzon was so upset he washed his hands and went home, never to return to Australia. The interior was redesigned and built on the cheap, necessitating more than one upgrade to the acoustics of the auditoriums over the years. As it turned out, the Sydney Opera House was so iconic it made Australia iconic. When there is a Hollywood movie montage of world cities, it almost always includes Sydney’s opera house, putting Australia on the world stage. The tourist numbers it attracts are insane, and in retrospect it’s a sin that Utzon’s full masterpiece was never built. As it is, it is the Arts Centre Melbourne that has the best acoustic stages. Leading to the rather esoteric joke: Australia has the best opera house in the world. Shame the exterior is in Sydney when the interior is in Melbourne.
Actually, you are both right 🤣The segments were designed to reflect on the sails in the harbour but the Danish architect who designed the opera house said he got the original inspiration for the design from an orange hence the orange peel in the opening shot of the song! The idea is that each of the sails if rotated and pieced together form a perfect sphere! LOL, so it was one of those rare occurrences where you were both correct!❤And agreed Tim's a genius lyricist!
This is a really cool track. Tim is a unique songwriter, who can make you well up with nostalgic, melancholic tears in one song, then in the very next song break the world record for the number of times the word f*ck is used in a song. Tim is a creative savant.
I haven't yet listened to this without being brought to tears. The history of the opera house and its architects is so tragic, and Tim is just so utterly brilliant in how he pays tribute. There are just so many layers of meaning in it, plus Jimmy Barnes!! For me, this is so incredible it should be celebrated with awards. Add in a glorious video with so many characters that I'm interested in... this is the best musical thing of the year.
Love it. Loved seeing Courtney Act (our own drag queen TV star and also winner of Big Brother UK a few years back. Especially loved seeing Winifred Atwell who gained fame in the UK with her piano playing. She eventually resided in Oz and was a regular on Aussie TV when I was a young. Also there is a vid of Tim talking about writing this song. Hilarious what he wanted to say (but not allowed) after "the next day he delivered a couch".
The Sydney Opera House is a world icon, and Tim was the perfect man to produce such a brilliant song that said all about it. Such a cleverly written song as Tim always produces and this has to be one of his best ever releases always loved him from way back in his very early standup days and he has worked hard been smart and look where he is now. Your right. This song will never top the charts but 50 years from now, when in context “Play it safe”” Keep it simple” will still inspire wonderful things.
Anyone notice the orange peel in the opening shot of the music video? As an Aussie, yes I concur, the Sydney Opera House does also resemble segments of an orange 🍊 😆 PS Nicely done again Tim, brilliant 🎉
Sometimes, it seems like every artist or singer in Australia was born in England. This is hardly surprising as in the 2021 Australian Census, 27.6% of respondents reported being born overseas, while 48.2% had at least one parent born overseas. This helps us Aussies keep a sense of balance, as while it seems that, statistically, over 25% of our artist's and singers would have been born overseas, it is probably safe to assume that for every English born singer or actor in Australia, we would likely have a corresponding percentage of English born rapists, murderers, thieves and grifters born in England as well. Statistics are fun.
@@flor9389 He was still born in England; don't bugger up some good statistics highlighting the nefarious side of those monsters ... ahem ... I mean, "people" born in England lol. However, as an example, England has produced two serial killers with "Ripper" as the last part of their working title. Jack The Ripper and Peter Sutcliffe, The Yorkshire Ripper. I can't think of any person born in Australia who has ever been labelled with a murderous title of "Ripper" in their name.
That's so funny, the opera house 'sails' are supposed to be a sphere, cut into sections. The designer/ architect whatever, and I'm not going to say his name ( he was Danish ), but he supposedly came up with the idea whilst eating an orange, lol. ❤
The inspiration for the Opera House sails was nature, specifically things like birds, clouds, walnuts and trees. That's according to the designer/architect, Jørn Utzon. The orange peel comes into play as a solution to the difficulty of designing and constructing the sails. All the concrete segments for the sails are based on a sphere with a radius of 246 feet, but vary in length. This allowed all the concrete segments (the shell ribs) to be cast in the same formwork moulds.
OK, I obviously missed the James and Duncan stories, because I have no idea what that's all about. This video by Minchin was really cool. Shows artistry in multiple disciplines and that's always a treat. The Thamesmen are still my favorite reaction channel duo. I'm starting to wonder if I should take something for that?....😆 Time for Endless Forms Most Beautiful from the Tampere show!

Hey guys from Oz ! Awesome song yes however the key point that is often overlooked is the release date + timing of Tim’s master work …. IMO Although the song appears as a tribute to the Sydney Opera House (yes, they’re sails) it is a celebration of diversity + inclusion no matter what your background. The song was released as Australia was voting on an opportunity to change our constitution to acknowledge our indigenous forebears. THAT’s the background story + the song’s message The brilliance of Tim”s work is incredibly subtle however in my opinion his message to Oz’tralia is very clear - sit in your box + lock our history + ancestors out. V proud of Tim’s ongoing Gutsy work as the majority of the country steamrolled our v real black history 👏👏👏
Tim nails it again. I love the line “leave the weird ideas to the Danish” (A Danish architect designed the Opera House). And yes, he got the idea from peeling an orange. You see the orange peel at the very beginning Apparently if all the “sails” where put together they would form a perfect sphere.
It’s a myth but partly based on fact. It was actually another architect- Eero Saarinen who cut into a grapefruit over breakfast and later described his discovery to the world using an orange. Danish architect Utzon (who designed the Opera House) built on this idea.
Regarding the "Dodgy old Paddies". The Opera House was constructed during a turbulent period in the Australian building industry. The Builders' Labourers Federation in NSW was under the control in the late 1960s and early 1970s of a young radical leadership, led by a man called Jack Mundey (Irish name but totally Australian). They were famous for saving lots of iconic parts of Sydney from dodgy development by implementing "Green Bans". One of the things they did was establish that the the Opera House workers got to take control of the job. They elected their foreman and decided how to operate the job on a day to day basis. The result was far from dodgy. Productivity soared as an Australian icon was constructed by what effectively amounted to "worker's' control". Also, my older brother got to play at the opening because our school in Canberra had its own orchestra which played at the opening in 1975. But that's another story.
And I almost forgot, the first performance at the Opera House, in 1960 0r '61, by Paul Robeson to the building workers. ua-cam.com/video/Eg7bPgrosAE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=spontaneous45

Tim's the best! I'm so glad he came back on the scene, he was gone for too long, but not forgotten. This song could be put to so many situations, not just the Danish opera house designer. That was Courtney Act with the long blonde curly hair, Australia's most famous trans. She just wowed us on the mask singer. I love our uniqueness in this country. 😘💖
Despite assertions here to the contrary, oranges and grapefruits were designed to look like the various ‘shells’ of the building exterior if you put them all together. Isn’t nature wonderful?
Alex needs a podcast where he insults the entire world and ends with Great Britain to make it all okay. Is that 2 references to people you know that you wish you didn't in one episode? That was a ridiculous good song. As one of those who lives outside the box I truly appreciate Tim Minchin's songwriting and humor that focuses you on the opposite of what he's saying.
Love Tim, his creativity and humour. I envy his hair. However, I couldn't kick the feeling that I'd heard the melody of the opening lines somewhere...then...ABBA: The Winner Takes it All... Obviously, it branches out theatrically and musically beyond that but there it is...briefly. It's the chord structure (briefly), it's the vibe...not plagiarism.
Well it is supposed to be, if you put all the sections together it forms a complete circle. That’s what I’ve been told anyhow. So your orange is not far from the mark, right.
Here’s a wee bit of interesting info: My husband hates the Opera House 😱 shock horror right? He was a Rigger & part of a construction crew contracted to fix a number of broken tiles on the sails. This process also gave him a lifelong terrible opinion of engineers, which was enforced with every big project he was ever involved in (including the behemoth Sydney 2000 Olympic athlete statues placed in awkwardly high positions around the city). As a rigger he had to build a hoist to follow the curve of the sails to get materials & men to where they were needed. He took one look at the engineering plans & said; “Nope, not going to happen”. They didn’t listen, of course & made them do it anyway 🙄 Many thousands of dollars in more broken tiles later, the engineers decided it wouldn’t work 🤨 & decided to consult with the riggers to find a solution & what do you know…sparkling new tiles appeared! I love the Opera House (& Tim Minchin!) but hubby is forever traumatised by it, poor thing 😂😂✌🏼

There's a myth that the sails of the Opera House would fit together to form a sphere. This is not quite right. The process was inspired by an orange. But they don't fit together to form a sphere.
