I took my time reading the Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty. You can tell the author really put her whole heart into it. I can't speak for the rep, but I think it was written beautifuly and I love it so much. My #1 favourite adult fantasy series.

My memories conflate Hatchet with My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. I think I liked the latter more. Julie of the Wolves by the same author was a childhood fave too, in the same survival vein.
I don't really take my time with books to savor them when I'm first reading. I binge if I'm loving it and slog through if I'm not. Although I might put off an ending if I'm really into it, because I don't want it to end. Red White and Royal Blue and Felix Ever After are two that I reread slowly to savor.

Interesting! Yeah, there were a few of those survival type books. Thanks for sharing!

I should really wait to leave a comment until I've watched the whole video instead of just doing several... But I also wanted to say how much I love hearing your breakdowns in the beginning. So interesting!

A book I really took my time with was These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever. It was twisted and dark, the characters were so well formed and unlike one another that their personalities contrasted one another in such an interesting way...it was an amazing slow burn. Best book I’ve ever read! Btw, loved your wrap up! I added so many new books to my tbr :)

Great wrap up! Loved listening while getting ready for the day :)
Reading slowly... recently that was Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer - that took me several months of savouring the writing and concepts (finished in January with 5 stars). A less recent example with the The Sympathizer by Viet Thahn Nguyen - I spent a month carefully reading that book 2 years ago (4-5 stars I can’t remember now 😋)

You've sold me on the Eva Leigh series. I'm not only an 80's kid, but I love the movies and music from that decade. Our, um we'll call it "fashion" was rather unfortunate in that decade. 😂 But our music and movies-chef's 😘. (don't care if they don't all age well or aren't PC or whatever -I personally think it's ridiculous to judge something from centuries or decades ago by today's standards). Disappointing to hear about A Dark and Hollow Star. I had it on my TBR although I didn't realize it was YA, and generally I just don't have the patience for all the angsty red shirts who are "not like other girls /boys" so I probably would have removed it anyway. Love that you're reading more Ruby Dixon. Many times after I've read something disappointing she is just what the doctor ordered. 😂 My favorite in the Risdaverse so far has been the third one (I think) very Beauty and the Beast where our hero is a 🐱 alien. (Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone retellings are my romance crack). But her Ice Planet and Ice Home series are chef's 😘. Her Ice Home has a surprising amount of diversity for a campy SciFi romance. All colors of the rainbow, an amputee, PTSD and even couples therapy all on an Ice Planet. 😂 Gotta love it.

The Shepherd's Crown by Terry Pratchett. It was the last book he completed before he died, and it was the *last* new book of his I would ever have, since I long ago completed reading his back catalog. As a long time reader of his, I wanted to savor it.

I really enjoyed the Inheritance Games, I feel like it depends on the mood because I was enjoying it so much even though it felt, as you said, more about the drama and I cringed at times 😂

I still need to read the Black Company, I have it and I am so torn about reading it soon but it seems intersting. I have a bind up too so I kind of want to just read them all.

I had to read Hatchet a couple of times in school and was not a fan, but knowing it's partly based on the author's experience makes me appreciate it more!
I'm really excited for The Girl From Shadow Springs!! I find I can like Western-esque stories when it's mixed with other genres. Though I have no idea how but I somehow got this idea in my head that it's an indie published book?? which...Simon and Schuster definitely isn't lol
I read a few excerpts from Audre Lorde in class and I need to read more of her work!
I took my time with The Ordering of Love which is Madeleine L'Engle's collected poems. I really liked ending my day with them and I think sometimes I read poetry too quickly, and I was really loving these so I wanted to savor them and get as much out of them as I could.

    • @BeautifullyBookishBethany

Yeah, Hatchet isn't for everyone, but his life is really interesting. Yeah, Girl From Shadow Springs is great but not indie!

I'm taking my time reading "The Lottery & Other Stories" by Shirley Jackson, described in the back blurb as stories about "the creeping unease of lives squandered and the unspoken terrors of everyday." It's creepy and thought-provoking and I'm really enjoying unwrapping and thinking over the stories.

Yay for middle grade books! I've been wanting to check out some of the diver MG from Rick Riordan presents because they all sound super interesting with mythology from non-white cultures. And I want to finish Adam Gidwitz's middle grade horror fairytale retelling series this year called A Tale Dark and Grimm.

    My rating system is
    5* favorite of all time
    4* I really enjoyed it a lot
    3* I liked it
2* I forced myself to finish it
    1* I DNFd it
I wish goodreads allowed half stars but in my reviews I’ll say if it’s an added half star

A Dark and Hollow Star has such a beautiful cover, I'm sad to hear it wasn't that great....I didn't have high hopes though, it doesn't sound like my sort of book I just want the cover lol

I guess I never seen or it didn't bother me as I don't remember fat shaming in Percy Jackson. 🤷‍♀️ I really need to read the next set of books in Roirdans series. So behind.

The Westing Game was one of my favorite books that we had to read for class in 6th grade. And funny enough Hatchet was one of my least favorite. Lol. Similar with the movie adaptations we had to watch. Neither was great, but I at least had fun watching The Westing Game and Hatchet was truly terrible. 😂

I think the nature of the book dictates how you read it. Literary fiction makes up about 20-30% of my readings, and those usually, if not always, force you to think. Any book written by a Russian author is a guarantee for deep thoughts lol( exaggerating, but great deal of truth in that).
But, for the most recent one: The Vanishing Half, which I actually read last month. This whole issue of passing as White, and what you gain and what you lose in that process gives you a lot to think about. But even outside race, just the concept of giving up a significant part of who you are to gain something else is genuinely interesting.

I’m currently listening to firefly lane so I can watch the Netflix series-I’m savouring that because there’s so much to take in and so much to enjoy! I wasn’t a massive fan of Sadie by Courtney summers so I’ll be interested to read her new one... it’s not a priority though!
