Those boxes are awesome! I personally use these clamp latches as the lock. You can easily tighten them and release them quickly but I find they hold the lid tighter for more security

My air compressor is set up as a kit, there's an ammo box bolted to it with adapters, tire inflator, blowgun, air tool oil, etc.
It's all there and all that stuff is out of the way when it's not in use

This is EXACTLY the kind of content that got me watching this channel! This is a project that lots of people can learn something from, it passes down generational information and imparts some good old fashioned logic. This kind of content is so much better than the political or religious topics, which cody has every right to make but it's not interesting to me personally. More making stuff and working projects!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

I've been doing the "kit" type thing for a year or so now, but just using tool bags that came with cordless tools. One example is my tiedown bag: 4 good ratchet straps, one 50ft and two 25ft lengths of rope, small tarp, and some carabiners. All fits into the basic bag 12"- 14" bag most drills come with.
Definitely inspired to build some boxes for the things that don't quite fit in the bags or need more protection.

Yes!!!! So excited for more! My father was a Kit type person an I was so fascinated when we would work together in the woods or fields on the Tractor or truck . Nice work, however, that latch is a bit too high up, which is why it isn't tight, and why it opened at the end, you did latch it but it came undone. You can bend the hook then it will be nice and snug.

I really love learning about niche items like this Forest Service white gas storage box. The brass funnel for this box was also really interesting. A person could utilize this same concept for a number of other uses as well. It's really neat what simple methods those before us opted for in their work. I hope we can get back to the simpler and slower time from when this white gas box first came to be.

Couldn't agree more. It's always magical when you see things as they are, what it took to make it and how it lasts. Eye-opening for lack of better word. May it be man made or natural like a small pond. Just the intricacies of it all. Invisible to most.

Glad you mentioned a lantern box at the end, I was just about to ask if you think the hard board is ridged enough to protect the globe if it was used to make a box for one. I have several Coleman and zebco lanterns (propane and white gas styles) but don't currently have any good transportation cases for any of them.

Not sure about those "coasties", but here in the middle coast of Michigan, an old wood butcher's trick is to use the nail as the drill bit. Stays tighter being it doesn't remove any material, & any humidity just tightens the grip... Lol, just something I was taught a half century ago by my Dad... Thanx !

Hey Cody I only recently came across your channel I have thoroughly enjoyed watching you videos and have learned a ton keep up the great content! P.S. I have been going back and watching some of your older videos just catching up on all that I’ve been missing the video I watched previously to this you were asking about the splatter from your mig we used to use this stuff you dip the end of your welder in I cannot think of the name of it but we switched to a spray that works a little better as far as the cause it’s a combination of things in my experience it’s pretty much unavoidable I always just kept an about 5” brick chisel handy to scrape over big surfaces and screwdriver to get into tight spaces or just run your soft wheel on your grinder over it with very light pressure will also get it off…the brick chisel is also very useful to get the slag of the edge of material if you cut with your plasma just smack it with flat of the chisel it’s actually quicker than trying to grind it off sometimes

Love this content, with one exception, as a beginning professional homeowner in Vermont , be careful about lumping us in with the rest of the east coast guys, we can hold our own :-) . that being said, my grandfather taught me not only to have a tool, but what you need to take care of it, so saws came with files, ax's came with stones...etc . He said, not just tools, but all things in life, what is the point if you can't maintain it. Thanks for the reminder and the words of wisdom.

I love the nostalgic more and more as time passes. I really enjoyed this video. As for the lid of the old box....I think it was beveled so when the lid was open , binding against the hinges, it was so that it would not be flat thus encouraging items(weight) to be added. Too much weight stress the screws.

east coast here. We would call that hardboard masonite. Its great for interior floor protection jobs. 1/4" holds up well against cart wheels. Even 1/8" isnt too bad. Def need 1/4" if you're on carpet though. It holds up better than 1/4" ply for the floor protection and its cheaper. No good for outside though, water reisitance is prety bad. I've also seen it as the back on cheap bookshelves or cabinets.

I dont see the point to the overhang of the lid. I think it would look better flush. I know you said its so you have something to grab onto to lift but it has a handle on top you can use and the eyelit of the latch would also give you a quick spot to lift from if needed.

For loading my tools and materials I like using a combination of soft bags and hard boxes. I prefer soft bags whenever possible because the bags conform to one another allowing tighter packing but the fuel storage has an obvious need for a hard box.

I like the safety boots in this video. I think the model is called "Safety Sally's worst nightmare". Refer to the author of the Bible for an exact parts number. 🤣
BTW, in my opinion, all edges on all carpentry work should be rounded or bevelled. It protects the edges, less likely to cut yourself, less likely to scratch a softer surface, and in my experience paint will stick better compared to a 90° edge. If the paint chips off a hard edge it will continue to peel off.
Besides, IMHO it also looks much better, much more professional, with very little extra work.

Great job Cody but I don’t agree with you on the lid choice. I think if not only for aesthetics, you should have tapered the lid. You don’t need the overhang because you have the eye screw when you open it. I really think the flat square Lil detracts from the beauty of the overall product.

I know an old (90+) lumberjack who uses a similar-looking box to carry some of his tools. The lid was similarly tapered and thinking about it, he used to hold it between his legs when he was taking a break or using the box to prop up his chainsaw. I'd guess the taper keeps bruising down at least if there's no other reason. I'll ask him if I get the chance.

The Kmart store at 3rd and fairfax in los Angeles used to keep a pallet of coleman gallons and bottles of propane at the top of the basement access stairs. The propane cans in the far corner of the basement were on upper shelves without any rails to stop them from falling off the shelves. This to me looked so dangerous as a fire hazard with hundreds of people in the store. If somebody knocked off a gallon at the top of the stairs it could flow down into the basement.

Wonder if we are going to get another video on him fixing the lid and how his ego gets in the way and how these purpose built items were built that way for a reason. Like, what do you need a lip on the lid when you have a giant handle. Went through all the trouble to chamfer the sides but not the lid. The lids are likely that way to create kind of a chute. When you have multiple boxes together, you can slide them in and out without damaging the ones next to it.

One thing about having a stencil machine is the desire to stamp everything. It’s the one tool that I ask the wife to come to my cave and ask if an item is stencil worthy and 9 times out of 10 she’s right. Another suggestion is to hide the machine from your wife because EVERYTHING will get stenciled! Good at making decisions for you but horrible for her😂😂😂. I love how you talk about people on the east Coast like they are some mysterious Sasquatch type man who is rarely seen but they have a rich and complex oral tradition and culture. Beautiful job as always brother!
