It seems not many people realize that "High days" is Bert's tribute to Cliff Aungier. I remember Cliff played a gig at our London college, must have been 1967, and his arrangement of Greensleeves, which he called Bluesleeves, showed me what one could do with the acoustic guitar. Before that except for some jazz, Jango Reinhart, and clasical Segovia, which I thought too difficult I had only really seen the singing nun, too boring, using an acoustic guitar. I almost immediately bought a guitar and quickly got into Bert Jansch, Jo Anne Kelly, Stephan Grossman and Rory Block and even Donovan. A few years later I had a few drinks with Cliff at Eddie's wine bar in Twickenham where he was one of a supply of guitarist that Edddie knew and they would do an occasional gig in the bar. I can't remember what we talked about.

Cliff was my first real guitar hero too. Some enlightened person at our school (Ealing) put on a folk concert, a package including Martin Carthy, Cliff Aungier, Johnny Joyce and Mac McGann and a few others. At nearly 17, summer 1966, it was my first experience of live music. I'd been a Shadows fan, then a Donovan fan, been playing guitar for 6 months and had recently discovered Bert's music. But Cliff blew me away that day - it was the first really exciting guitar playing I'd ever heard (and I'd heard Clapton by then). A few months later I joined my first band. A few months after that, I recorded this off the radio, and learned to play a crude version of it (which I also still have on tape... That's how I know this was early '67 or before, because my own version is dated April 1967 😉) I met him briefly in 1970 when my band supported Accolade (Gordon Giltrap and Don Partridge's band) and he did a guest spot with Gerry Lockran; and then saw him a few times playing a wine bar in Twickenham (1975), but never spoke to him. Then bumped into him by chance in 1999 (story on the Cliff Aungier facebook site).
By the way, High Days is in Bert Transcribed Volume 2, and the link with Cliff is clearly explained in the notes there. So hopefully more people will know now! 🙂

@@Jonpriley Thanks for sharing that. I lived in Twickenham for a while up to about 1975. It could well have been the same wine bar. Yes, I have seen that Bert Transcribed Volume 2 is out. I must order a copy.

I saw Cliff in the Fountain, Margate, probably about ‘68. Great performer. Thanks for sharing this Jon.
