Llamas are larger than alpacas, and are used as pack animals. Alpacas are mainly kept for their fiber, which is finer than that of llamas. Alpacas are very small; not much larger then a goat (except the long neck) and are not strong enough to be used for packing. Aside from their size, one of the tell tale differences are their ears. Alpacas have straight ears while llama ears are curved in a banana-like shape. Llamas hardly think twice about spitting at a human; alpacas rarely spit at humans.
But how are they different?
Aside from the aforementioned physical and behavioral traits, there's not a huge difference at all. Genetically, they are so similar that a llama and alpaca can interbreed, and the resulting hybrid offspring is also capable of reproduction.
