I went to San Diego and trained at Chiba Sensei's dojo in the mid 90's and was shocked to see Chiba Sensei himself show up and teach the afternoon class when there were just a handful of us on the mat , needless to say being uke for Chiba sensei completely changed the way I saw Aikido training and I'm incredibly thankful for the time I spent there, it was an amazing experience.

Chiba Sensei had several years here in the UK in I believe the 1970s before eventually going to San Diego in 81. The years here were notoriously hard, unforgiving training.
I was already Nidan by the time I met my true instructor, who was taught by Chiba during this time and his practice was extraordinarily hard. I really had to work hard and re-learn.
I wrote to Chiba Sensei in the early 90s to ask if I could travel to SanDiego and train as Uchi Deshi but the training programme had ended by then.
I would have done anything to train with him, just once.
Kith, Trigwell, it was the late 60s. My ex boss trained with him, it was in Newcastle. My boss was so good at it that he and Chiba then moved to London, where they lived and trained together for 2 years . My boss could be dangerous when he was drunk!

I did a seminar with Chiba Sensei once. It was inspiring and fun but also definitely pretty scary. He had a reputation for dislocating shoulders or breaking arms. You had to be very awake, partly out of fear of getting hurt, but more just out of seeing his example.
I was glad he wasn't my own teacher. That was too much for me, and went against too much of who I am personally. Other teachers were better, for me. But especially with his emphasis on zazen, I have great respect for him. For many people, meditation is harder than any physical practice, because we have to have the gentleness and seriousness to see exactly what we are doing at each moment. We cannot remain in the illusion that because we have some physical ability, we are wonderful or better than someone else or on the right path.
I had the chance to train in Birankai for 20+ years. I ended up representing Chiba Sensei in Portugal (where I opened my first school). I can say that in all those years, I have never seen Chiba Sensei breaking someone on purpose. The numerous accidents I have witnessed were all due to the uke (the partner) being "less than usual": too tired, not awake, or whatever. And Chiba Sensei's movement ended up a "bit too much" for that precise person at that precise moment. Call it a mismatch in expectations. This means one thing: Chiba Sensei always "kept us on our toes". and expected us to be at the best of our abilities when practicing with him. I was priviledged to be his translator for many many years, as well as his Uke in many seminars in France. He was always pulling us towards his very high standards. indeed, some people couldn't take it, and left... By the way, very touching to see Roger in this interview. @@ChristophePeytier Indeed, stay awake and focus on training. In a dojo it is fundamental to stay in focus. But I can understand human who are thinking or having not the physical strength or mind to accept something. In this case I will show great respect for this sensei and also for those who are still growing and learning the principals of aikido. Thanks for all !!!

Só q é uma arte para ser usada apenas em academia, essas artes de movimentos suaves e bonitos nao funcionam em uma briga ou ataque na rua
Tenho 23 anos de Aikido, alguns de judo e jiu-jitsu. Qualquer arte e treinamento te coloca em vantagem sobre alguém que não sabe nada ou nunca treinou, ou seja, sobre a maioria das pessoas. Se você é uma pessoa que nunca treinou arte nenhuma e é fraca fisicamente, sua única chance numa briga, ataque, assalto etc. é com uma arma de fogo.

This i believe is part of the training... The near feeling that the uke could be severely injured, and how close to that feeling both partners can comfortably get to, is important to be able to overcome the fear (or barely escape) actually being injured outside of practice.
P.S. It is essential to not injure training partners during practice of any kind including sparring, although good practice is carried out with spirit and intention. Limits are therefore often tested. Chiba was known to have been very rough on his students in America, some of them didn't return after being injured by him as was briefly mentioned in this video 05:22

Hi Zoran, I personally do not know Aikido Tendoryu. Maybe this style of aikido did not come to Brazil.
Hi Zoran, Aikikai is the school that was founded by O Sensei and has been headed by his bloodline. The other is a style from one of his students. Very similar in my opinion.
Ótimos ensinamentos do Park sensei. Uma dúvida: quando ele fala de zazen ele tá falando o do zen budismo ou alguma outra meditação?????
É a meditação do Zen Budismo. Até a almofada que ele usa é a mesma dos templos Zen.
Alguns dojos da Birankai também praticam misogi no kokyu ho (práticas de purificação pela respiração) de uma escola chamada Ichikukai, da qual o próprio Chiba sensei era aluno, assim como outros senseis importantes do Aikido como Tohei sensei e Tada sensei. Abraço.
