- During the October 2023 Pain Science Lecture Series, Dr. Sam Kim presented her lecture titled, "Mindfulness for Chronic Pain" which discussed the concept of mindfulness, scientific evidence of mindfulness for pain management, and ways to practice mindfulness in life to improve pain.
The Pain Science Lecture Series was created in 2016 by Heather Poupore-King, PhD, a Stanford clinical associate professor in the division of pain medicine and pain psychologist, to provide community-based education about chronic pain. These free monthly series are presented by Stanford pain medicine and pain psychology fellows and focus on various topics, including biological, psychological, behavioral and social factors as they relate to the experience of chronic pain.
Samsuk Kim, PhD., completed her doctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Detroit Mercy and her internship at VA Boston Healthcare System. Her specialty training is in health psychology and behavioral medicine. In addition, she did her research training at the University of Michigan, focusing on understanding psychological factors (e.g., pain acceptance, mindfulness) to improve chronic pain. She is currently a pain psychology fellow at Stanford University, and she hopes to continue this line of work to transform and enhance treatment for pain management through dedicated clinical practice and innovative research. She immigrated from South Korea, and her favorite things to do in her spare time include dancing, traveling, and spending time with her family, friends, and pet.
