I'd be curious to hear how these guitars have worked out for those who bought them. The 5K guitar has a suspiciously bad sound, IMO, so who knows what was done with it regarding things like strings and setup. Was there an issue with tuning? I heard an out of tune guitar. Any guitar player I mean realistically would pick a chord and listen for tuning before playing to make a judgement right?
Yes, the Bourgeois guitar was well out of tune and I suspect the strings may have been old, as well as too light for the guitar to allow it to sound thin and less resonant during the comparison. The set-up on the Bourgeois may well have been less than optimal also to make it less satisfying to play and less resonant. The first thing I do is tuning to the best I can achieve as the guitar is strung and set up. Then I check intonation and tuning stability if the strings look at least 'new-ish'. Old, dirty strings can play havoc with both intonation and tuning stability as well as sounding dull and lifeless.
It’s quite obvious to musicians that Kevin already knew the assignment here. Any guitarist would’ve either tuned it up or handed it right back to them. Notice he’s heavy on that D chord with first guitar then switches to the fuller E chord on the 2nd guitar. That’s not an accident. lol they are doing everything possible to make guitar 1 sound thin, and guitar 2 sound more deep and resonant. They did a good job. 😂
Yep. Clever in-person 'marketing' on their part. Whenever I A/B any stringed instruments, I carefully do at least a quick visual and tactile check of the set-up , attempt to get a feel for the age and condition of the strings, then tune to the best that I can get out of the instrument as set-up and strung. To A/B properly, I always play the exact same riffs/songs on both instruments to get a fair comparison. Then, if I am serious about a pair of instruments, I ask for new strings to be installed to see if that changes things, which it often does. Any seller worth dealing with will sacrifice the time and cost of 2 sets of strings to make a sale, on at least a mid-priced instrument. I have made a few online purchases of new (and used) instruments after diligent research, and have been lucky so far, but getting your hands, ears, and eyes on the guitar is always the best way to go if possible. As a stringed instrument tech I have the ability to make adjustments/improvements to new and especially used instruments to get them to reach their highest potential, so that has given me an advantage when purchasing remotely.

As a guitarist, its so blatantly obvious that one of these guitars had a recent setup and the other hasn't. I can't say that manufacturing quality has nothing to do with it, but this is at best dishonest, at worst defamatory to the other manufacturer. The timbre of both instruments were nice and have a place in a studio session, but when real guitarists shop for guitars, we tune up first, ignore a semi-shoddy setup because we can fix that ourselves, and choose what suits our needs at the time. Slimy advertising fits right in to the market space I suppose...😒
If you actually played guitar, you’d know how flawed that test is. I could bring you a badly set up million dollar guitar, and a well set up shitty no name guitar and the well set up would easily outperform. Dude just brings out 2 random guitars like he wouldn’t sabotage the one that’s not his.
Zager guitars sells guitars straight from the factory.. So it can be done .. What they do is mail it to you. If you do not like it , send it back within a certai time frame.. But if you have a good product , it wont be sent back . There are some great guitar factories/luthiers in China.. Eastman has stormed the market. Their quality control rivals Martin's.. Mexico's quality is good too . But then again there is a whopping amount of excellent luthiers in Mexico and access to some great native woods .
Looks like an incredible guitar....not sure why Kevin didn't ask cost to sell price factor, as he always does. It also would take a LONG time to become scalable, as even the boutique builders have to build a certain number to become profitable.
I will buy a M and M because it is in my price range and solid woods. I think that the blindfold test was unfair and needed an independent to set up both guitars. I think that the 5 k guitar had either cheap strings or was not tuned properly or both.
Tuned or not, the tone quality of the second guitar was in a league of the best handmade guitars out there (in the range of $7,000 to $20,000) and the first not equal by any means to what you would expect to pay more than $500 for, not $5,000. While tone is one of the best indicators of a guitar's quality, there are many other factors.
I wouldn't pay $900 for that site unseen without playing it. I was leary paying $399 for my Gretsch Rancher site unseen but it turned out great when I got it.
Step one, detune the first guitar, step 2 raise the bridge and screw up the intonation, step 3 set up the cheap guitar perfectly, lower the bridge, get the truss-rod titson and tune it to doomsday with fresh strings, maybe even lighter gauge... Taylor did the same thing years ago and it worked for them so... Go for it.
The sales team isn’t that great for sweetwater though. Some don’t like being asked questions apparently , as if they have something better to do than offer customer service

They always want at least 50% of the business. I would never sell half of my business (especially for a measly $35K) if I actually believed in it.
Tuning is also good
Love to tell these sharks ‘Stick to your day job!’ 😂😂
So where do I buy one🙂
They said on line didn't they?
I love this guy!
He is a fool.
Slimy advertising fits right in to the market space I suppose...😒
as a baker, any moron would know the first guitar was out of tune.
Can't believe they didn't give Kevin the Guitar.
If you actually played guitar, you’d know how flawed that test is. I could bring you a badly set up million dollar guitar, and a well set up shitty no name guitar and the well set up would easily outperform.
Dude just brings out 2 random guitars like he wouldn’t sabotage the one that’s not his.
Always great to see Kevin play! Shocking to see questioning the ability to selling a guitar DTC…
Things have dramatically changed by 2024.😊
Zager guitars sells guitars straight from the factory..
So that was 2 years ago and I've never heard of these guitars....
I really dont know who was more oblivious of the two
Do they know of Thomann? They're huge!
this was hilarious!
Lol the $5k guitar wasn't in tune and had old strings
4:52 Bingo, endorsements! "Mike Dawes says...", "Khaki King says..." "Marcian says..."
You dont pay 5 grand for a guitar because its a great guitar, you buy it so you can say you have a $5k guitar.
Good choice cause I would buy one right now
Why, the first guitar was deliberately setup with the wrong strings and was out of tune.
there is dd canada? damn here we go another one
Canada came before shark tank before two of them moved to the US and started Shark Tank there
I have never heard an expensive guitar say over 2K sound that tinny, there was no low end.
Strings could do damage in the case.. tune?
I thought the 1st one sounded brighter and louder, and I would prefer it for my kind of playing. Maybe they miked them up different.
I buy guitars online without playing them- only 1 didn’t work out and I returned getting full $$ back
they rigged the 5000 guitar
Kiesel/Carvin guitars. Big company thats been around for years and years. American made and only bought on line
"and for those reasons, I'm OOOT"
Just goes to proove that a $5000 guitar is worth nothing if it's out of tune.
When asked about using a different wood, they replied, 'I dont know!'
Red Flag...I'm out!!
Can't go wrong with Rancher or Jim Dandy.
Go for it.
(Spits) “ON THE INTERNET?!”
First guitar not tuned and what is with the strings not being clipped at the tuners. Man that is a pet peeve for me!
Captain Walker !
I guess none of those folks ever heard of Sweetwater. UA-cam influencers more than glad to do most of the sales work for them.
Sweetwater is amazing and you can return anything within 30 days. Most of us players won't buy something we can't play first
The sales team isn’t that great for sweetwater though. Some don’t like being asked questions apparently , as if they have something better to do than offer customer service
Is this from 2005?
Instruments are always evolving just like the mousetrap.
I'm a professional guitarist, Harley Benton does a great job just from the internet. There are companies, guitar/music stores that front for Harley Benton; I have Harley Bentons as well as Les Pauls, Telecasters, 335's, a buttload of guitars, soooo, I don't know, from just hearing the guitar and seeing the guitar, 900 bucks, I want one. I don't see where the internet first sales would be negative. Guitar Centre and such like would probably want to have them in their stores and on line...
I prefer the guitar in tune...
Why did they have the High priced guitar "Totally Out Of Tune?"...Naturally just about anyone will gravitate to the "In Tune Instrument" even if it's a Kazoo...
Tune up plz....😂💚🎸
Sarah McLachlan dated one of them. The song is called Monsters. Enjoy the honesty.
Who knew Mr. Wonderful was a bad ass guitarist 🎉🎉🎉
musical instruments are sold online all the time, just have to have a great return policy, and the $5000 guitar was clearly set up poorly
yep and wasn't even in tune, likely purposefully
Learning O'Leary plays guitar makes me want to give it up.
Why haha
Yea, exactly why? I was impressed. It's so rare these days in a specialist economy that people can do multiple things well. I think you're just a bit jealous.
O`Leary playing a few "cowboy chords" hardly qualifies as playing well.@@booishoois309
He played some “Tommy” riffs.
Sounds exactly like any run of the mill Rogue or Johnson guitar, they go for $89 to your door.
Also their same exact guitar is sold by many “ boutique” sellers, an i do mean the exact same guitars from the exact same factory, Andrew whites production line is one of them, this same guitar with his name on it goes for around $499 not $5000 😂
Wow - Frankenstein's Bride.
He could tell if it was In tune or not..but as important as the sound is the feel .. there are nice sounding guitars that are very difficult to play..and this, the guitarrist is not at his best
You only needed 35K! You cannot even buy a new car for that much money. If you walked away without the "deal", 1000 new investors would have contacted you from the States. I'm looking to purchase on as we speak. Thanks for a great guitar in advance.
My brother in Christ where do you live that you cannot get a new car for 35k.
God damn, somebody tune that guitar.
I’m surprised that Kevin didn’t hear that the first guitar was horribly out of tune. I’d love to know who made guitar number one. It was also probably strung with crappy thin strings… good sales pitch boys!!
=== Clearly the 5K guitar was out of tune. Just goes to show you the length people will go to fool you. I will say though, the second guitar did sound better sonically than the first one even though the first one was out of tune. ====
I mean…at least tune the other guitar.
No Shit!!!
The second one wasn't either!
Tuning helps….
Kevin O’Leary plays the guitar as well as his wife drives a powerboat.
