Been waiting for this one. Spassky Bishop Block! 😂 Edit: Mario Lopez’s delivery of the Sinead O’Connor joke and his subsequent little gesture after it is gold!
Enjoying these immensely and hopefully we get all of the New Class episodes as well, it's canon! This should be the ultimate channel for the franchise!
Rocky IV didn't end the Cold War, this episode did, the USSR collapsed 3 months after it aired. (btw I wrote that before I saw you had put a clip from Rocky IV into the episode lol).
Being a massive, MASSIVE chess nut my entire life (came 8th in Ontario in my 12th grade year and was captain for 4 years in HS as well), I have adored this episode and not only would I listen to chess on the radio if it existed, I would enjoy it! lol. So that whole Spassky block is indeed nonsense, without context of positions: I'm super glad you brought that up :) Alison's super cartoony voice is SO jarring compared to her regular voice, it actually shows off a bit of range. I love the Sinead and, "Rushin'," jokes btw, I say the Rushin' one all the time and have for many years lol. It's also another lame joke like the above two, but I love Guy-Guy's, "and we didn't come from no sewer, we hitched a ride on a garbage truck!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Great stuff, my favourite episodes were always season 3 and on (even if they aren't, "as good," as the first two seasons), so these are getting better and better :D Keep 'em coming!
Oh good, I knew someone with some chess knowledge could be out there to give me a little peace of mind about my chess moves breakdown. Thanks for being that "someone"!
That scene with the chess team practicing in the gray sweatsuits has definitely been cut out the episode every time it aired in syndication because I don’t remember ever seeing it in reruns.
7:13 Sinead did that to call out the SA in the Catholic Church (which she had suffered through herself). She was condemned for it even though it turned out she was right. Also the following week's episode had Joe Pesci call her out and threaten her with a 'smack' (and made a lame bald joke too). Real classy, Joe...
True. I couldn’t come up with an angle that wouldn’t be too cynical or be an editing nightmare. The sitcom historian in me laments that I didn’t try harder…

Has anyone mentioned yet that you’re supposed to hit the clock with the same hand you move the piece with? That’s another thing that bothered me with this episode: Screech keeps moving the pieces with his left hand then hitting the clock with his right.
So the cute Riverside high girl actor went on to nena famous Hollywood interior designer huh? So did the mom " Kate " from ALF. she never worked before or after ALF... nor did she want to. I don't know y i brought that up? Lol
When these vids pop up on my feed I make little squealing noises. Also Allison has the grooviest outfits, like she strolled off an episode of the Partridge Family.
Even though SBTB is hardly what you might call "believable," the show really pushes the believability with the Russian chess player looking like a Zach duplicate from the beginning. When the character first walks out, you instantly know there's going to be some kind of shenanigans with Zach and his Russian double.
When Zack walks out later as Peter I sometimes forget that the switch has happened. Sometimes the best plans amount to fantastic luck and a discerning casting director.
Shucks, you know Mr. Belding is a softie when it comes to freedom of the airwaves. Zack may have been busted for gambling and kidnapping, but Wolfman Zack still had a captive chess-listening audience that Mr. B. just could not deny!
Damn you skipped the part when Zack is playing Screech and he says Jas Win the Game. My favorite part growing up for some reason. Then Zack says I surrender Screechnovich, you’re too good
It's funny because just winning the game depends on what moves Zack does. It's not like Screechnovich could just, I don't know, do a Checkers-style leap frog move to win...
Right!?! What is she doing there looking all... like she is? I think my rule is that if something plagues me in an episode then it needs to plague everyone else.
I realised the person behind her is holding a SCREECH banner, but at an angle behind her it looks like it says CREEP lol. Anycase I went into a deep dive wondering who that woman could be and for a little while It kind of looked like Candy SpellIng, Tori SpellIngs mom, but I gave up after about 2 hours lol.
Maybe you should retire the whole “Shut up Dustin Diamond” bit, considering he’s been dead for 3 years. Anyway, I don’t know if a high school chess championship would get this much attention from the non nerdy students, also having cheerleaders there would be more of a distraction than a help. I also like to think that Screech and Violet got back together before he died.
It's a valid point with his death, but I think I'll keep it up with two things in mind: 1) He did write a book and generally crap on the show - perhaps with some reasons - and that didn't quite get resolved. 2) I think I do enough championing of his acting in SBTB and in the Screech Deep Dives (another one drops this month) to counterbalance the jokey shut ups. Thanks for speaking up!
@@savedbythebelldeepdives Those are valid points, Dustin Diamond did burn some bridges with the rest of the cast, though I think he did try to make amends towards the end of his life.

ok that confused me. At first i thought you meant the character Tori and I was like "woah, how did we get that far already?" :O But yeah you mean Spelling. :P
Yes, Spassky is most famous (in America) for losing to Bobby Fischer. "News" was different in 1972, and it does seem kind of weird that anyone would care about international chess, but there was a "cold" war going on then (not to be confused with the actual war in Vietnam). In reality, nobody cared about chess and Fischer -- while an amazing prodigy -- was a legitimate mental case who would go on to become a reclusive conspiracy theorist ... but doesn't Zack's hair look cool in this episode?
@@savedbythebelldeepdives We were taught -- without evidence -- that the Russian was automatically bad in those days. I guess there's a reason why nostalgia sells. 😉
"Nobody cared about chess and Fischer" except the millions of people who watched the games on TV in 1972. Fischer appeared on Johnny Carson's show and Dick Cavett multiple times. The only reason the top chess players today earn a good living is because of Fischer
What bothers me the most about this episode (and Save the Max) is the MAJOR mistake of KKTY's frequency of 98.6. All FM stations in the United States end in odd numbers. AM Stations are even numbers.
In the "Save the Max" comments, I've seen some interesting takes on this. One is that 98.6 is a goofy reference to the average internal body temperature. Another person said that some countries (I think in Europe, but I can't recall offhand) use even numbers for radio stations. Either way, it feels odd that there isn't really some in-universe way to explain it. It's just a fun show for kids with a wacky premise.
