Agree with both of you on the new Crowded House. The stuff I'd heard from them in the past was all "eh, it's ok" and this new one really impressed me. I think I need to go back and listen to everything from them again.
They did do Split Enz. But Neil Finn generally speaking seems like he'd be right up Jason's alley. He's just such an effortless melodicist. He's one of those artists who one day will pass away and everyone will talk about how much they always loved him. But here in life? He doesn't get 1/10th the acclaim he ought to. Crowded House, Split Enz, Finn Brothers, albums with his wife and with his son, true solo stuff... There's *so* much out there and so much of it is incredible.
I never got the love for them. Good songwriting but itself does not a great band make. Musically, they’re just boring bland vanilla dated acoustic guitar-based soft rock.
This year I didn't get to listen to that much music compared to last year, still got to 42 albums in the end. hmmm... Jason, you've turned me on to such great music (Nico Paulo, Kacey Johansing, Wednesday, etc.), but the Waxahatchee review surprised me. Most overhyped: Charli XCX - Brat (I don't even dislike this album; I gave it a light 8/10 and put it in my honorable mentions. However, it has dominated numerous year-end lists, and I don't think it's worthy of all these accolades; Charli (2019) was superior, but received less praise.) Biggest disappointment: St. Vincent - All Born Screaming (Another album that I liked. Unfortunately, the industrial rock aesthetic isn't explored to the degree I was anticipating, and I'm not crazy about track 2 or the album's closing leg. This is the first St. Vincent studio record not to make my top 50, breaking a 6-album (or 17-year) streak, and thus has to be considered my disappointment of 2024.) And now for my 5 least-favorite acclaimed (not necessarily universal acclaim) albums of 2024: 5. Ariana Grande - Eternal Sunshine: I disagree with the sentiment that 2024 was a great year for mainstream pop. Billie/Dua Lipa/Camila Cabelo/Taylor Swift/Sabrina Carpenter/FLO put out middling material, but this Grande album was the most boring one of the bunch. 4. Pearl Jam - Dark Matter: A dull and pointless album from a 90s legacy act. Bands like Collective Soul, Smashing Pumpkins, Dandy Warhols, Primal Scream, and Jesus & Mary Chain also put out lackluster records in 2024, but at least those ones were ignored. 3. Phosphorescent - Revelator: Winner of the 2024 Andy Shauf Prize for blandest indie folk album. 2. Sprints - Letter to Self: Some of the most uninspired post-punk I've ever heard. The band has no chemistry whatsoever. 1. Body Meat - Starchris: A nightmarish, autotune-filled fusion of R&B/pop that encompasses every modern trend of music that I despise. Grotesque and hideous. My biggest disappointments of 2024 were Jason’s opinions on Sign o the times and seventeen seconds. Hey, Jason. Santa called. You’re on the naughty list!
Bikini Body's Weird Party is the best EP of 2024 IMO, with Chelsea Wolfe's Unbound on the "need to listen to that properly" list. Embarrassed the biggest surprise for me is Geordie Greep since black midi was news to me, and I think both are great. The cover I didn't particularly like because it rips off Cultural Revolution imagery for the sake of love-murder navel gazing, but since that's what the New Sound is all about then it fits. In terms of covers, the Brat LP should be placed next to the Durutti Column sandpaper cover. I discovered this year that Canadian artist Baby Rose has a really good voice. In new to me I added to my itunes Bubu (Anabelas), some Wobbler albums, German Oak, Cardiacs and The Necessaries. Biggest disappointment was Cardi B speech for Kamala Harris. She should have shamed her rather than praising. Also disappointing is that Sweeping Promises are dragging their feet on making merch available online to fanatics. How hard can it be to print t-shirts.
Best debut. The last dinner party Other good debuts are Sprints /English Teacher / NewDad Best comeback. The cure Most overhyped. Charil xcx brat. Biggest disappointment. Fontaines DC romance (although it was very good)
My top disappointment is Valley of the Sun. Just lazy riffs, ones you’ve heard in a million metal songs. Previous album was so good, so I was really excited for it. I didn’t like the new Priest either, but semi expected it. Metal has not been good and this made me turn to country, sometimes.

Cindy Lee’s interminable album is just that. It’s too long. It’s way too damn long, especially for the quality of music that it is, it’s just too much. It’s not an Exile on Main Street or London Calling or 69 Love Songs situation where more is more, where every single song is amazing. Not the case at all.

I absolutely agree with Joe, Invincible Shield kicks so much ass.
Also, I have to say that the Blood Incatation album cover is also pretty dope.
"Lives Outgrown" by Beth Gibbons would be my Senior Circuit winner. Absolutely incredible album. And "Dummy" was exactly 30 years ago, so it counts!
Here we go!
Time for y'all to deep dive Crowded House 🥳

I can't avoid thinking of the cover and a song from Genesis Nursery Cryme (+The Musical Box lyrics) when seeing the cover of the Geordie Greep album.
So gross and edgy for me, thumbs down.
