- "Son of Svengoolie" was a horror comedy show that ran old b-movies, mixed in with sketches & song parodies. It debuted in 1979 on WFLD in Chicago, and was pretty popular until 1986, when WFLD was cleaning house to make room for their upcoming FOX affiliated schedule & gave Svengoolie the boot with little advance warning. This clip is from the very last episode of the original series, where the guy was obviously bitter (since then, the show has been rebooted a few times, but never quite as popular as it was in the 80's. Today, it airs Saturday nights on WCIU) Alot of the bits were awful in that early 80's sort of way, bad parodies, lame sketches, but alot of the stuff was pretty clever for it's time.. I've always had a fondness for this particular bit. I believe this is the first time this clip has been shown on UA-cam. I have a ton of VHS tapes of these episodes, but you can find a zillion other clips from the show on YT, or at www.fuzzymemories.tv .. the history of this show is actually pretty entertaining.. for an early 80's low budget wrap around show.

"Never quite as popular as it was in the 80s"? You might want to change that description. Svengoolie is now NATIONALLY syndicated and has gotten quite a colossal following all across the United States, with even celebrities like Mark Hamill tuning in every night. He's also become a fixture of the comic convention scene, and he's singlehandedly keeping the horror host tradition alive. I'd say he's never been as popular as he is right now!

@@fjccommish It clearly says "Son of Svengoolie". Koz wrote for the original Sven show before he and Jerry Bishop brought it back in 1979. Bishop gave Koz the okay to drop the "Son of" part of the name in 1994.

on the bright side, the Chicago Bears won their only super bowl to date just hours after Svengoolie got cancelled.
I'm a born and raised Milwaukeean. But I watched him or reruns of him when I was tiny. Then I found out he was on the air again when I was in high school. I love this guy!!! He is one of the tv personalities who has reinforced me to be me. ❤ He's coming to Milwaukee for the Milwaukee Gaming Classic con. I went to Chicago's Comic Con and missed him last year. I'm excited to meet him in April!!!
It is humorous that this is posted and the show is now across the nation. I watched it in my youth on a Philadelphia station, I believe it was channel 48 UHF. Now to the present where I have an official autographed rubber chicken and six types of Svengoolie tshirts. It just goes to show that the he has endured. My Saturday is not complete without super sci-fi Saturday night on MEtv.
Chicagoland (& Berwyn) must've been livid and up in arms when FLD pulled the plug. Fortunately, The U later brought his show back to the airwaves in the 90's, and now he's finally getting his due being syndicated nationwide on MeTV.

He wins the Rondo Hatton Award every year for Best Horror TV Host -- so consistently, in fact, that he even asked the award keeper not to put his name in nomination for awhile, to give others a chance. But the keeper said no.

Anyone get the irony? Sven canceled for Thicke of the night. Gilbert was on Thicke of the night. Alan gets canceled. Gilbert out of work. Sven comes back and Gilbert on his show

He was exposing the Werewolves of Berwyn. They're the ones who pushed to have him cancelled. Didn't you think it was odd that the network president wore a Babushka?
Great memories of when I was getting him on antenna out of Chicago. I was 90 miles from the station too!..

Oh, that's just it... It wasn't called the Svengoolie incident, it was just Rich Koz trying to regain what was so unfairly taken from him. He even did a showed a prerecorded skit demonstrating how he "hacked his way into the signal". Additional episodes followed, including Rich being "scolded" for his actions, then being praised for having surprisingly high viewership of his new unnamed show, resulting in it finally being made regular programming & named "The Koz Zone".

I never missed the show when I lived in California back in the day. Probably just as well I didn't see this. After having to witness the last episode of Captain Cosmic, the damage to my already iffy psyche could have been substantial.

I didn't know this show went that long, as the only time I saw him, was when he hosted the last couple years of "Creature (Double) Feature" on Boston's WLVI 56. Since his Chicago station also ran the show, or similar, it wasn't hard for the Chicago station to video clips and send them to Boston to use.

In the early 70's there was the original "Svengoolie," played by Jerry G. Bishop. What you see here was the end of the first run for, "The Son of Svengoolie," with Rich Koz. It ran on Chicago's channel 32 from 1979-1986. His show was revived on WCIU Channel 26, "The U," in 1995. With the digital conversion "The U," came out with MeTV (see what they did there ;-) And of course Svengoolie finally got nationally syndicated and is bigger than ever!

From what I understand, pulling Svengoolie was News Corp's decision. As soon as they took over 32 and the other Metromedia stations, they started pulling popular local based shows from them. And then the brain trust at Fox would buy more stations over the years and strip them of their local feel. WTXF in Philadelphia is one example, it's not the great TV 29 of old anymore.

He didn't fully go easily.... Ever hear of Captain Midnight? Some clowns briefly hacked the broadcasts of a pair of Chicago-local VHF stations & performed an unintelligible, seemingly improvised comedy skit. I guess Rich saw that & approached the execs with an idea. And so.. on a Friday night in the latter part of the 80s, after the 10-o'clock news ended on FOX-FLD, the highly promoted broadcast of "Lassie Come-Home" began when suddenly: Hey! Who's this guy w/the phony black-bar over his eyes?
