The director of "Lawrence", David Lean, was so pleased with Alford`s "Colonel Bogey" that he had used in "The Bridge On The River Kwai" that he wanted to honour him also in his next film. Hence the wonderful use of this march in the movie.
A few have mentioned the composer's name as Kenneth Alford, which was the composer's published name. His actual name was Major F.J. Ricketts (Frederick Joseph), psm, R.M. but due to Army regulations at the time, outside commercial activities were frowned upon, so he adopted the nom de plume of Kenneth Alford. He is also the composer of the Colonel Bogey March, amongst many others. I would love to know who performed this version as it is one of my favourites.
At that stage simhopp, he was suffering from cancer. You should have seen a photo of him when he was in his prime. A well built man you would not want to tangle with. A fine looking man.
No all i meant was that he was not a well man, and that's why he looked so drawn. I am not suggesting anything at all. I think you are trying to make something out of nothing.
This is an excellent performance. It shows what a difference an outstanding conductor can make even in such a rigid format as a military march. 31/08/2020
Hello, see UA-cam video "Wembley 1981", massed British bands at Wembley Stadium, over a thousand men playing this and other marches. Stunning. Saludos from Uruguay
'"The Voice of the Gun" (singular, I've heard), but you're right, Sailor, it's a brilliant counterpoint to Jarre's music (and the plot) in "Lawrence". Alford the composer was the Sousa of Britain.
One of my favourites.! Thanks for posting it for all to enjoy. 👍🏾 And for those with a decent subwoofer... 😎
Truly one of the greatest compositions by sir Alford
My friends band took this to UIL state marching contest in 2004! (New Boston). This is definitely One of the most well written marches
Whatever he was called, Freddie was a great composer of marches. He should receive full credit for his compositions.
Santiago brought me here we love you Santiago from Rancho Alamitos
I some how knew a person from our district would be here
hi christian
i love it when the band plays this at cadet camp

All brass bands need to be grateful to Major Ricketts, aka Kenneth J Alford. We play his music year in and year out.
No, I think this is the recording by the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth - from a whole album of Alford Marches.

Lawrence of Arabia - voice of the guns
Fond memories of easteny barracks and parade ground...1950's
good show old Chap, this is the stuff of the British Empire
Just like RN ships are simply HMS - Her Majesty's Ship - the Empire was simply "the Empire".
