In Search of OLD PARTICK

  • A walk through Partick in Glasgow's West End, from Partickhill to Pointhouse, in search of the Partick of long ago. Along the way we look at Partick's early beginnings as a stronghold of the Kings of Strathclyde, its strong links with Govan over the River Clyde, and that first medieval mill that paved the way for many grain and flour mills along the banks of the River Kelvin, like the Bunhouse Mill, Regent Mill, Scotstown Mill and the Bishop Mill, the latter still standing.
    Using old paintings, prints and maps, we piece together old Partick, and explore the only two buildings left over from the Partick of old before Partick's population expanded rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century and the Partick that we know today was developed.
    We also look inside what is probably the only old-style tenement still standing in Partick, dating to perhaps the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.

    Ex Carradale Street. Old Partick for me is pre 1970 and the 'Lowland Clearances' for the expressway.

      The great storm or hurricane was in 1968; a lot of families moved out of Glasgow in the following year as many buildings became uninhabitable. Not far from Drem Place (once called Marshall Place) was the tram depot, and I remember a small playpark not far from there with swings and what have you.

    Hi Eddy another great video , I dont know the area myself but used to listen to my mother telling us of her trips on the ferry , she in fact was born in Regent Moray street in Overnewton and when I was a wee girl spent most of my days at various Aunties and of course Kelvingrove Art Gallery my second home..its still a must visit when I come home ... thanks for another crackin' film Eddy...

      Glad you enjoyed it. Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum's a great place. As a child I particularly enjoyed the little window through which you could turn a light off and see lots of rocks glowing different colours.

    My relative renovated the mill in Patrick in the 1970's, I remember visiting him with my dad when I was a kid, seemed supper modern at the time, with sky lights and open plan.

    Interesting stuff. Have you ever read Finding Merlin by Adam Ardrey? In it, Ardrey places the Arthurian legends in what is now Partick, tracing Merlin's life in 6th century Scotland and his fight against the introduction of Christianity, in the form of St. Mungo. It's out of print now, I think, but it's worth tracking down a second hand copy.

      Many thanks. There's a whole load of history going on here. It's often hard to dis-tangle the history or fact from the myth and legend. It's all way too complicated for me.

    it's amazing to think that they're building a bridge (as we speak ) between Partick and Govan at the spot where that original Ferry was by the Kelvin and Clyde.

    Love reading the comment section about “Patrick.” Someone needs to have a word with whoever does the iPhone spell check, maybe an ancestor of the old map makers 😂
    Really interesting video thanks, brought up on Chancellor st in the 80’s and recently moved back to Partick 30 years after leaving, ye cannae beat it!
    Sent your vids to my mum who grew up here in the 60’s.
    Tragedy about St Simons recently, total shame😢

    Thanks again for doing this Eddy. I have relatives who lived on Cooperswell St who moved to the U.S. in the 1930’s.
    I made a scale model of a Partick Tenement similar to the one we lived in on Vine St at Russel St.
    I am planning to build a scale model of the Woolworth Store on Dumbarton Road. I need a full on photo taken from the other side of the street where the old toilets were.
    If you could take this photo for me I would greatly appreciate it. I would scale up the photo but require a dimension of a door frame or one of the windows.
    I would be happy to make a donation for your help.
    Regards Charlie

      Hallo there. I'd be happy to do this. But before I do anything, the following Google street view image shows the building. Would this suffice? There are people in shot which gives an idea of scale. If it doesn't and you need an actual photo, I can do that, but are you also saying you need me to measure a door or something?

    Thanks very much for this tour of old Partick. I am writing a book on the Crawfords and studying Captain Thomas Crawford's connection to Partick and the mills there this is very helpful seeing the actual place. Can the Bishop's Mill or Partick Mill be entered or is it being used for something else now?

    • @EdExploresScotland
      @EdExploresScotland  2 роки тому

      Many thanks for your comment. The Bishop's Mill is now housing, and so not accessible. Only the outer shell exists. Good luck with your research.

    Thanks, Eddy, that was great. Not a native of Partick but very fond of the place. Live way up north now. Is the old Quaker graveyard still there in Purdon Street? And has the old steamie been demolished?

    • @EdExploresScotland
      @EdExploresScotland  3 роки тому

      Many thanks, Maggie. The Quaker burial ground is still there. It's in Keith Street, all modern housing now. The old steamie has long gone. This link will take you to an interior photo of the Partick steamie. As you may see there's a 'View Larger Image' option. Take care. www.theglasgowstory.com/image/?inum=TGSA01988&t=2
