    My local garage didn't want to do this job, citing brittle plastic on an old car. I used to use strips of thick cloth between the door bottoms and the body, and this seemed to stop a lot of the leakage. Curiously, the problem has stopped now by itself - moss growing on the window seal rubber stops water getting in!

    Thank you so much for this video, I've managed to sort out the damp problem, just a bit of further information for you, my 05 mk1 had the metal panels rivited, I removed all but one at the centre top because it is attached to the window mechanism, I used a 6mm drill bit to remove the rivets and bought a rivet gun of amazon for £10.99 that included the required 6.4mm rivits. It's as good as new, I can't thank you enough HH, now I've just got to work out why the front footwells are getting wet.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, later models come with rivets I'm afraid, so many would be put off doing it, maybe they want to deter people from opening up the door panel to fix issues themselves or it is quicker for the robot to rivet the panel on or it guarantees a tight fit as bolts could potentially come loose. All the more important to make sure these bolts (when fitted) are all torqued up evenly :-)

    Hi mate, I recently found your channel.
    I was wondering if you'd know about the mk2 fabia. So there are water drain holes on the bottom of the door. Is it part of the design to have them fill up with water and pour out when doors are opened? Only worried as I've had corroded sill due to it been parked up but now fixed. The water seems to come through the door into inner door but comes out when open

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  10 днів тому +1

      @@Rycka9 this is common on the fabia1 and commonly leaked into the rear footwells. I'm not sure if this was addressed fully on mk2, but my belief is they have. I don't know exactly what they did, but my understanding is water enters via the window seal edges then travel through the door cavity and out through the little slot holes at the bottom of the door which is external to the car. Water will then make it's way out over the sill and can sleep underneath exacerbating the conditions for rust over time. I would make sure these holes are cleaned out for the free run of water. Water shouldn't just escape when you open a door, but seal out continuously. Also examine the top seal and consider replacing.

    • @frglee
      @frglee 4 роки тому

      I reckon water gets in the driver's door through the window seal and damages the central locking module inside the door - it used to click the locks repeatedly or open the windows in wet weather. The cheap 'temporary' solution was to remove the fuse to the central locking, the doors still lock manually.

      You could, but there are already holes there. You have to bend down a lot to see them under the rim edge. Whatever holes there are, water has to drip off the door vertically down. When there is light rain water ingress, water will creep horizontally, hence why the fabia's drain holes are positioned where they are, on this edge :-)

      Good question; there are 2 small holes under the bottom of the door lip. I have never noticed any sloshing about of water, so the holes don't seem to get blocked. Another theory of mine is water may get in by capillary action from pooling at the bottom of the body door sill and touching the inner panel past the door seal, but I didn't dare say that in the video as it sounds like i have too much time to think of such things. You could just cover over the top of the seal area with silicon (any will do) but it is best to be able to lift the panel so new silicon can sandwich in-between the gap for a better seal. It is a bit of a pain with the rivet true, but you can drill these out and then fit aftermarket 'RIVNUTS' (no special tools needed to fit) that then will use bolts.

      I show in the video where I think the water gets into the panel by the window felt seam, from there is seeps down and soaks into the foam seal. Yes, later models unfortunately came with riveted panels (why?). These
      are large 6.4mm rivets that you will have to drill out. Once the panel is off,
      the window mech can be accessed to replace the window. Given the large size of the rivets, another means of fixing them securely back into place would probably be easier. Maybe you could drill new holes to the side, seal the original holes with rubber grommets and use smaller rivets.
