Keep in mind you have phalanxes, which are the most powerful defensive unit in the game. If you were to build an inverted V shape on the gate with the spears pointed inward, it would annihilate anyone who tried to enter the settlement. They could still attrite you with ranged weapons, but you have a pretty good skirmisher advantage here as well. Keeping your spears in a formation facing head-on with so much distance to the gate makes it very easy for them to be flanked and for the Romans to pass by the hoplites. You should also try to salley and delay with your lighter units, forcing the other two armies to attack through one entrance and focusing your entire defense there. A passive defense like this is doomed, especially if you don't have your hoplites in optimal formation.

Thank you for the advice! I will try to do this, when I sally to try and stop the other siege units and V shape the spears on the gate I want them to enter through. with the spears on the gate, do I try to get the smallest V possible on the gate or just make sure all the spears are pointed into the V?

@@sigy4ever What I aim for is as elongated of a V shape as possible, so get 2 pike units and widen out the formation to get something like 3-4 ranks per phalanx. Position each one so that they're as close to the wall as possible, and the "legs" of the V are a little spread out so that they are less likely to be flanked (do also keep in mind that as they battle enemies, they will march forward a couple steps. If you need to reposition, make them go to normal formation and run back to their place, trying to get them to stay in phalanx will just screw up their pathfinding). This strat is more advantageous for pikemen than hoplites due to the longer spears.
Just play around with it. It's amazing for settlement defense and bridge battles, and you can slaughter entire armies with this strat. It doesn't work nearly as well in field battles, though, and the heavies Roman legions can power through, but otherwise it makes the Greeks (and Germans for some reason) extremely good at defending. I also don't know if this has been nerfed in the HD remake, but it should still be quite strong

I think you can tell pretty easily which ones the player and which ones are the AI.

Not bad bro like the other dude said, you have to utilize your army to their full potential or else your doomed. Anyway is this a campaign or custom battle?
