HOW goal celebrations became a thing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 бер 2022
- Ronaldo has his "Siuuu", Serge Gnabry is "cooking", other players have their very own signature moves when it comes to celebrating goals. But it wasn't always like this. Once upon a time, goal scorers would briefly raise a hand and quickly run back to the middle of the pitch. Why has that changed? And what does it say about modern football and all of us...?
What's your favorite goal celebration out there? Tell us in the comments...
Report: Kamilla Jarzina and Henning Hesse

That's why I love Thomas Müller. His cellies are just pure joy.
Lmao true
Just like Luka Modrić
Cellies? Who says that?
Mulllleeeeerrrrrr

Goal celebrations in modern football is part of a player's identity like Ronaldo's Siu, Messi's tribute to his grandmother, Bale's heart sign(which he trademarked it) and Salah's and Mane's tribute to Allah. Back here in South Africa, he dance when ever we score. Look at Simphiwe Tshabalala's goal against Mexico at the 2010 world cup.
The celebrations means very little to me beyond just a moment of joy. Instinctively, I view it as the player reacting.... just like the fans but in their own way.
Personally I like the old fashioned celebrations of enjoying the moment and hugging teammates etc. Not really bothered if there's a fancy celebration, it's the goal that always matters
You must be one heck of a boring person what is there to prefer lol
Curious that the video showed Balotelli who has also been chided for his lack of a celebration, but who argued that the letter carrier doesn't celebrate delivering the mail. Or at least he is reputed to have said. It's always been hard separating what Mario actually did from people claimed he did.
This documentary deserves a SIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
imagine what football would be like if the game stopped for two minutes while teams celebrated their important tackles and saves the way they celebrate goals.
We'd get used to it and not go on UA-cam and bitch about it. Simple.
Defenders do that all the time
They do that in American "football"
Every tackle, sack, interception, reception or punt return gets celebrated. Little wonder the broadcast times are so long with actual action being a small fraction
some defenders did a choreography for an interception last superbowl
Yeah sure let's not celebrate scoring and not feel anything when a team scores that would be really nice. Let's cut out all emotions from the game
I have to say, Klinsi doing the diver was absolutely brilliant back in the day. It completely turned the perception around.
Thomas Müller. Instant, in the moment and always true to himself.
No pre-rehearsed nonsense.
And just to prove how authentic he is, just watch him whenever ANY OF HIS TEAMMATES score or assists, he ALWAYS celebrates every single positive action.
"Pre-rehearsed nonsense?" You must be fun at parties mf
He's just a goofy superstar who doesn't think about whether he is a superstar. When he shows emotions they're real.
@@Wootang254 savage😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
and the funniest thing is that he just doesn't care. He goes back to his wife, plays with his horses, makes some jokes and spread happiness.
My favorite celebration of all time is Fabio Grosso's after he scored the 1:0 in extra time against Germany in the semi-finals 2006. He's just running and shaking his head until his team mates catch him and throw him to the ground and themselves on top of him. It is pure reaction of joy and ecstasy, pure authenticity.
On cloud 9. No drug could ever…
My favorite goal celebration is definitely Cantona's. It's such an iconic celebration.
keita did the same one a few months ago after unleashing a bullet. it was fun to see.
But is it really a "celebration move" proper? I mean, he just opens his arms and slowly turns around
Love that we all collectivism just know its THAT ONE celebration after the chip
Oh i hadnt got to the part in the video when they showed it
As an African a goal celebration is definitely an art form💯
You have a favourite, randy?
@@dwkickoff watch ANY South African league match and those celebrations will tell you why it's an art forn
Obviously Roger Milla.
@@dwkickoff Ghana team 2010 world cup Kangaroo celebration is a true reflection of an African celebration.
World Cup 2010 South Africa's goal.
I personally prefer Cristiano’s celebrations when he was a young winger at Man Utd because each one was unique and emotional in the moment. But calling the Siuuu inauthentic is a reach considering he probably came up with it because of the sheer volume of goals he scores. Hence, it became so iconic.
Wonderful video as always from DW Kick off! Hope to see more such awesome videos from DW.
Messi is the most humble player ever seen in this game for his stats and persona. That might be because that is how he is even outside the pitch, so humble. There is no showing-off in his celebration. He always points his hands to the sky to dedicate his goals to his grandmother who urged him to play the game to which he's the identity now. He hugs and shares smiles with his teammates after each goal. As for the iconic celebration in Bernabeau, that I think was the result of all the fouls, ill-treatments, frustrations, anger caused by the opposition in that match. Coz if u check his career history, he's been the player on whom fouls have been committed the most. Even after suffering horrific injuries, he still gets up enduring everything week in, week out. He never dives even after pushing, pulling, thrashing him. If he falls down, he gets up straight after and starts playing without complaining. Some say he's not the strongest out there. If this does not prove he's the strongest, I don't know what does.
ronaldo's version of celebration is great...
Dw kick off always deliver, amazing job!
Thanks, Al. Glad you love our content. Spread the word...
When I watch Tardelli celebration, I got goosegumps, it is very emotional celebration! I misses these kind of celebrations!
You know! I also love the Fabio Grosso one from the 2006 world cup semi final against Germany, just pure joy and emotion!
Adebayor vs Arsenal is the best celebration in football history
are you a City fan?
Most iconic celebrations in football:
-Griezmann's Hotline Bling
-Balotelli why always me
-Messi showing his shirt to the Bernabéu
-CR7 siuuuuu
-Vardy mocking clubs
-Griezmann's L
-Maradona raging
-CR7 calma calma
Bebeto holding baby 94
No
Iconic is something that will go on to be a 'classic'. The most iconic are messi's jersey or boot celebration, Ronaldo's siuu or calma, Maradonas playing to god, or pele's final celebration. These will some others are the ones that will be remembered in the next 50 years and will go on as iconic and a classic, not greizmann fucking dancing 😂
@@Yeahagreed you are right, I don't even know for Griezman dance celebration Haha, besides I bet this is some child that commented 😬
Robbie Keane
2:20 "They were really masculine"
Meanwhile the guy who scored on the video: "YIPEE!"
Some have more humble celebrations like Messi who points to the sky to his grandmother who actually allowed him to play football when he was a kid
These Messi fans boy will always find a way😂

@@dwkickoff thx so much!
Celebrations has become such a normal thing that nowadays mostly people remember the celebration but forgets the goals resulted to it
This is the first time i have been disappointed by DW. Producing a video about goal celebration without Henry's slide is a crime.
Touché 😬😅
@@dwkickoff cringes in irish, if i were irish.
This is a good reflection on the concept of Authenticity. Thank you for sharing this information!
collective -> individual
reaction -> action (personal branding)
stadium only -> TV screens
When I played football more actively in late middle school/early high school, I’d either do the celebration where you pointed two fingers in the sky (I think either Neymar or Messi did that one), or the Suii, it was just the way we knew how to express our joy of scoring as kids at the time 😂😅
Originally Kaka
It was a one-off, but Mario Balotelli's 'why always me' is one of my favourites
One-off is how it's supposed to be. I mean, who the hell celebrates the same way every time if he just goes with how he feels? No two goals are the same, no two goal celebrations should be the same either, even if they're by the same person...
Hands down Taradelli. That was just unleashing the emotions you kept under check for so long!! Grosso repeated it in 2006. Also Bebeto's baby holding celebration.
The Daniel Sturridge dance will forever be in the celebrations hall of fame
BRs The Champions said it best when Griezman says: "Whithout a signature celebration, what's the point of scoring a goal?"
And he's right about Ronaldo's siu thing. If you watch Ronaldo highlights, his goal celebrations were so much more interesting and endearing and real before he discovered the Siu. After the Siu, his celebrations turned boring and predictable, despite becoming the most iconic celebration on the planet.
As for Mbappe...I keep expecting him to sniff his fingers like that Molly Shannon character on Saturday Night Live from the 90s, when she would shove her hands into her armpits and then have a good sniff, a la Joachim Low.
The siuu was after he said that during one of the BDO ceremonies where he won. Sort of a reclamation. It's dope tho, might be predictable but it's lit af, especially when the whole stadium goes siiuuu and you can't help but join in. It's so much fun haha
Ronaldo's celebration is nt boring
I disagree with your view on the sui celebration. People are literally paying to scream sui after every Ronaldo goal in the stadium
If SIU celebration is boring to you, then you must be a boring soul.
Lol... No offense intended
no matter which player or team people support, everyone loves Ronaldo's SIIIIUUUU
Honestly i don't like artificial celebrations but no disrespect to the players... It doesn't look satisfying to be honest.
Fake AF is how I would describe it. To the point where I'm actively hoping someone doesn't score because I don't wanna have to watch their stupid "celebration"
vardy when he was doing the cloclk celebration againts man utd (sir alex fergusson)
I think goal celebrations are a new language to connect to the fans..
As much as I like the super talented Cristiano, I never liked his particular style of celebration, a kind of "interrupted jump" or "downwards jump". There are so many layers in celebrations, with political tinges (like Reinaldo's statue), or simply references to private jokes or aspects of the players life. For me, the most impressive celebration was Bebeto in FIFA 1994 world-cup mimicking a father rocking an imaginary baby (quickly joined by some team mates). African national teams players dancing together are also among my favorites.
A really wonderful video 👌
6:10 Roger Milla changed the game.
Actually... Pelé was more famous than him for his air punch, but dont know why since the 2000s Pele legend has being erased from history (he did the air punch since 58 and carry on doing until he retired)
shearer hands up very iconic also
Put your hands up in the air, put your hands up - in the air...
Spurs fan here- embarrassed them of Dele’s celebration
But I loved Sonny’s with individual handshakes to his team mates. Really miss those
Ellen White's celebration is amazing. Also the Dragon Ball celebration of Aubameyang in el Clasico was amazing
makes it even more amazing when you find out he did it for his kids
I'll always remember Marcelo Salas' celebrations. One knee to the ground, one hand pointing down, the other pointing up and the head bowed down. I don't know its meaning but it seemed so cool when he did it.
The slide after the goal is my personal favorite
Great video.
Nice documentary
When players started getting a substantial goal bonus is when they started going crazy.
I tend to like genuine and trully spontaneous celebratrions. When one of those becomes creative that's a bonus but not really important for me.
Really cool 😎 x
I think the predictability isn't that bad, gives us a chance to participate
There’s a guy from Wales called Robert Earnshaw….he’s next level.👌🏾
for me celebrations are Very cool it just adds the cherry on a cake FOR SURE ⚽️🕺
Roger milla Roger milla twerking the macossa africa dance is the most iconic of all
I like the celebrations. If you're a big name player then your celebration is your brand. Nothing wrong with that.
@KiwiNikified I think that is what the critics of trademark celebrations find fault with: Today the player is the brand, in the past it was the team. That CR7's career, for example, ended the way it did because the boy had too many eyes on him for too long to remain humble in a team.
My friend admitted that she was watching AFCON just to see the unique way African teams celebrated goals and match wins. We really have changed 😂
Marc Turner must be fun at parties haha
I know this is gonna be a bit off topic, but Vettel’s “thanking God for the car” after he wrapped up his championship with a couple of races to go - if I remember that particular celebration was from 2012 or 2013
this was amazing
Thanks, Diego. Spread the word...
Imagine getting salty over the Sui in 2022.
no one celebrate a goal with pure emotion like Inzaghi.. hahaha
The celebration I like the most: Thomas Müller's celebration 🌚❤️
Dybalas mask truly represents something....
I love that Cantona one. 😂
Volleyball celebration. I'd like to see a football team do that. Like it's really a team effort.
I remember the outcry in the late 80s of players, mostly in the Premier League . The media was having a field day of all the player's patting each others backsides, and I remember one picture where players were swapping spit (or claimed to be doing so). Im not sure how widespread this was, or how much the media beat things up, but I wasnt a supporter of the game, so if I knew about it, it must have been widely reported and photographed.
Best celebration is Jamie Bullard's mocking his dt.
You haven’t played football if you can’t understand how fun it is to celebrate its just entertainment remember football is for entertainment both the players and the fans
This is such a well written script ✌🏽
My favourite celebration was always Eric Cantona's against sunderland. 7:09 , just to humiliate the goalkeeper, so awesome 😎
It's beautiful and theatrical but sometimes it gets toooo muchhh yet it's OK anyway.
Ist mir jetzt auf Englisch zu schwierig zu schreiben: Entschuldigung dafür!
(Sorry for for not writing this text in english. My skills are not good enough)
Pushing their teammates to the side? 😪
@@dwkickoff A not uncommon move.
Is it illegal for the other team to play the ball while the other team are celebrating?
Suiiii 🔥
As far as I Rememeber it was a African man that was doing a salsa dance that started animated goal celebration.
Dybalas celebration is just 🔥🔥🔥
Ok. I felt offended to see almost none relation of the famous Pelé air punch as the start of goal celebrations... really??... he was doing so since 1958... spent whole 60s doing... than you said it about that image of him in the 70s only?!... you guys really erased how large Pelé was
siuuus
0:33 bro said “ Si. “
The best celebration is when the player quickly grabs the ball out of the net and runs back to the center so they can score again as quickly as possible. The best celebration is scoring again and again on the same opponent
😅
Nah it's the classic knee slide

How can you make a video about footballers celebrating and forget 2 out of 3 of Mario Balotelli‘s celebration? The instagram post and the one at the Euros vs Germany
Yes, Mario certainly had some memorable ones. The one against Germany would certainly be in if this was a best of celebrations video, which it isn't:)))
Football is a low scoring game so goals are precious. Let the scorers celebrate however they want to.
Celebrations in Brazil in the nineties were so wild that a Palmeiras player (Paulo Nunes) wore a pig mask (pejorative nickname given to rivals for the team, later adopted by the fans).
outside of the original Brazil celebrations. None they take away from the restart of the game. Now I am an old man, so keep that much in mind.
The Kanye music in the background 🔥🔥🔥
Goalgasm!!
Salah's signature celebration is one-foot-stand yoga pose.
And now we are in a phase of celebrations provoking the rivals crowd is being punished in some countries( like Brasil per example)
Messi's celebration..!!
The best celebration? Ronaldo's suiiiiiiii !!!!!
I like when my team lift the winners trophy celebration.
Very interesting video. I love football but I also love rugby because it is still about the collective and not the individual. If you watch the All Blacks you will see some of them doing post try celebration gestures but when you look into their origins you'll find the gestures are never individual branding. These gestures are paying tribute to their home province and their provincial teammates who helped them make it into the national team. So if a Southlander scores a try, he will celebrate by making his hands look like stag antlers. If a Tasman Mako player scores, he will put his hand on his forehead like a shark fin. Even when celebrating, these rugby players see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves.
Wow, cool info Crispy! We should make a part 2😁
