Back when they entered the AFL they needed to convince West Australians to switch to the Eagles, as many of them had their own VFL teams. A parochial team song helps. But now they're established, they need more than an anti-Victorian sentiment to keep going, they need to focus on their own history and identity

I think the AFL made them change it because it bags Victorians and that kind of parochialism doesn't sit well with their idea of a national competition.
David D They changed it because it became obsolete. The AFL changed from regional or state based drafting to a national draft. Players had to go where they were drafted, no matter what state or area they came from.

GWS were genuinely shit in last year's grand final. Same as Adelaide were in 2017, west coast were in 2015, sydney were in 2014 and freo were in 2013. If Vic bias were real, only Victorian teams would appear in the grand final, that hasn't happened since 2011. Stop blaming Vic bias for losing the 2016 grand final, only 8 points in the first quarter is a good reason, as is your defence and midfield was careless for the majority of the game (Tom boyds goal and Liam Pickens Mark and goal are good examples in the last quarter). If your team performs shit on the day, that's the only explanation I should be hearing, not some shite about bias towards Victorian teams.

The text was used until 2018, the Dockers joined in 1995, so it didn’t bother them for 23 years. Dockers are one club, the other 16 (and soon with the Tasmania Devils 17) teams are all from “the east”.
Granted the newer version (2006 if I am not wrong) was just a cover version of this. But they should have never change it to begin with, this is by far the best version of the WCE song. Why the need to change the song 4 times in 33 years whereas others haven’t changed it in 70 years or so?
The sound of this playing at t end of the the 1992 grand final was awesome and I don’t even follow eagles. 2006 and 2018 was somewhat tainted by their awful songs
