  • Best Freediving in Canada? 🇨🇦 #vancouverisland
    Vancouver Island... The best cold water diving on planet earth. East Sooke is a hot spot and the coastline is endless. Scuba divers need a boat, luckily we are a lot lighter on our feet and with a short hike and a sketchy climb down the rocks, the ocean is super accessible. A group of us went for a dive and spent the day on the beach doing a little catch and cook. The family and I also spent a night in Victoria, explored the waterfront and hit the jackpot while beachcombing for sea glass.

    agree, Kelp is highly important, its what most sea world lives with, and if whales can't feed on Kelp or on Krill that lives in the kelp that's a huge problem, also polar bears and bears feed on Kelp and Krill when they can't get seals or salmon, and due to the drought many salmon had perished. I didn't hear about anyone moving boulders to so the salmon have a way in the river system to reach their spawning grounds.

      Exactly. It's a big domino effect. Really sad to see. I wish more people dove as more people would wake up and see the problem.

    Always a big smile when I see a new upload from you. Always love seeing the lingcod footage. I’ll have to try sea cucumber sometime. Looks tasty.

    I've had many presentations in college and I always try to do them on the sea urchin invasion. I think the best thing we can do is expose people to what is happening. It's difficult to press an issue that over 90% of people will never see with their own eyes. Sometimes I fear that the ocean will be a barren wasteland before the general public even finds out. I hope it shows great resilience in the face of our destruction, but time will tell. Great video as always.

      @PNWSamson  Рік тому +2

      That's how I feel too. It was getting me down for a while, and still does for that matter. All we can do is "our best" and try to raise awareness of the issue. That's why I encourage more people to dive... It's hard to care about something you're not invested in. It's really a shame, I hope the ocean doesn't become one big wasteland but it already has in many places. Uhhhhh.

      Yup the places I dive around the CR area that's all you see, urchins everywhere, it's very concerning.

    As always, incredible. I had mentioned before about grants and I found one at least that is anywhere from $50-500., It's for small community grants for any civilian lol who makes a community better in B.C. also with what you have already in your footage, story, etc ....I wonder about grants for tech. equipment? I would look under environmental technology grants, video, social media, education, etc.
    Just want to see you have the best for yourself and family.. .or help make it more accessible to live the life you want.
    I'm on my way with my daughter and grandson too.
    I believe if we all are good it grows for everyone.

    RE the urchin barrens: I've seen a few vids of people taking matters into their own hands instead of waiting for the government to do anything about it

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  Місяць тому

      Yeah, unfortunately a few people smashing urchin will have a very minimal effect. Like a small drop in an ocean sized swimming pool. A coordinated effort is needed but we can't legally set anything up. Super dumb.

    Great visibility and variety of sealife. We just got rid of 1 ice engine car and bought an EV for my wife who commutes at lease 50K each day. I work from home so really dont drive that much. In a small way we are trying to reduce our carbon footprint...

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  Рік тому +1

      That's good man! Between my 1:20 minute work commute from Ladner to Langley, my ferry trip from the mainland to the island and all the driving I do for diving, I'm a heavy hitter when it comes to emissions. Luckily I'm able to fill my tank with flex fuel which apparently is not as bad as regular gasoline but yeah...I wish I could work from home too. ☹️

    Great spending time with your family on the beach while you guys did your dive. My snorkel after you came back wasn't nearly as satisfying, but Iron Mine Bay will give me a fix like you got at Beechy Head. It must have been really awesome swimming with all the rock fish. Wow!!! As for the sea cucumber... thank you.. but no thank you. Will never eat that again, but I was brave to try once.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  Рік тому

      Being with all those Rockfish in the kelp is something else. Such an experience. Black rockfish come right up to the surface so it's possible to see them like that while snorkeling too! And the sea cucumber... Haha. They are good! Cooked up like calamari might be a more favorable option for you. Most people like it that way. Good on you for trying though! It was a fun day for sure.

    Thanks for the great video once again. Your videos got me thinking about taking freediving lessons. What's is your thought on DCS?

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  Рік тому

      Do it man, will help you progress a lot faster and safely. DCS isn't anything I have to worry about. Not common in recreational freediving. If you are diving below 40m it's only recommended to do one dive per day. Or maybe it's 50m? I don't usually push 15m unless on the line so it's not a concern for me. Scuba divers stay down longer so they have to be super careful.
