I absolutely love how much BTS references my Greek heritage in their songs and performances. Even very recently, RM spoke about how the ancient Greeks and Asians had a similar philosophy and outlook on some things in life in one interview about Indigo.
And this connects to Carl Jung's theory of the Collective Unconscious! 🤯
Iconic performance ! Each time I see it, it's incredible , and what a beautiful construction with this crescendo till the end. The Dyonisos intro is mindblowing ! And Jimin's solo is already a legend ! There is a lot of symbolism in this Dyonisos Intro : First, each member represents a greek god and each one danced to one of their songs:
V - Apollo god of sun ( No more dream)
JIN - Ares god of war (Danger) (some said it's Athena , goddes of War)
SUGA - Hephaestus god of fire ( Fire)
JIMIN - Artemis goddes of moon ( I need U) - NB : Artemis is the twin of Apollo so it's perfect for the 95ers
JHOPE - Zeus god of thunder (Fake Love)
JK - Poseidon god of water (Save Me)
RM - Dionysus god of wine and art ( Dionysus)
The song is about their thirst for art, with which they can't live without in a way. Also, the seven light bulbs represents the Ariadne constellation. The exact positioning of the stars were replicated. Ariadne is Dionysus' wife and for the wedding he gifted her with a crown with 7 jewels. When she died, the crown casted into the sky to be a constellation. The 7 light also représents the 7 members, the 7 years of BTS.
And probably the album album Map of the soul 7 : it dropped 2 months later and we know BTS always put some hints of their future albums and songs in their shows ! I have noticed the words "EGO" and "SHADOW" write on the blackboard during RM "Personna", eastern eggs for the 2 songs, main theme of the future album witch are not released at that time; JK's dance in black on water may be a hint for black swan too ; The dance break during Dyonisos was on a remix of N.O ... and announced maybe the release of ON : we know the songs are back to back, they even used the same stairs during MMA 2020 ON than in the N.O MV in 2013. Just my opinion, I may be wrong.
Even the Dionysus dance break is meaningful. The first dancers are J-Hope and Jungkook, Zeus and Poseidon, you can see their battle for control. Then V and Jimin, Apollo and Artemis, mirror each other's movements because they are twin dieties. Lastly, Jin, Suga, and Namjoon (Ares, Hephaestus, Dionysus) are the outcasts of Olympus, hence their fall from the table. There is no coincidences in BTS performances, all is significant. Mindblowing, and significant.
You should check MMA 2019 explanation by XCeleste, or by the Bookish theory, I'm sure you will find it very interesting.
Most Korean kids take taekwondo lessons when little. Having said that, Jimin, JK, Suga, Jin did taekwondo. Jimin and Jin have black belts. Jk red-black, and Suga red belt. The members themselves mentioned this. Jimin also trained in kendo for 8 years (and competed), hapkido, as well as, Chinese martial arts (albeit for a short period during martial arts training in China)
Hi John, the recorded performances were also done in front of a live audience.
The men with hats are representing a ficcional character called "The Shadow". It was created to be a mysterious radio show narrator, but later developed to become a multiplataform character (in comic books, comic strips, television, serials, video games and films. - I mean, just like BTS! Mind-blowing! 🤯). Orson Welles, the genius film maker and radio star himself, got to play The Shadow in some episodes of the radio show. The Map Of The Soul era is based on Carl Jung's Analytical Psychology, and Jung brings us the concepts of the Persona, Shadow and Ego (among others), and this shows that not one single fly flying around a BTS the stage is random. Everything there has an important reason to be there. It is freaking amazing and I love everything about that!
Hey 😊 Just to clarify about the live performances - RM and Jimin are the ones that were shown live on the broadcast. (In order of performance) V, Jin, Yoongi, and J Hope, all had pre recorded performances which were what we saw on the broadcast, to ensure they could change for the final Dionysus stage. They performed live in front of the crowd at the same time as the pre recorded stage was shown on the broadcast, but just in their black Dionysus suits. JK’s performance was pre recorded for obvious reasons, and while he did dance on stage live, because of the water in his performance they couldn’t have a live performance of it in front of the crowd at the same time as the broadcast like the others, so he danced with the stage lights off.
Maknae (막내) is actually pronounced as mang-nay (first part has long a sound) - it’s confusing but Korean has many sound change rules in pronunciation. It’s used to refer to the youngest in a family, group,etc.
The opposite of that would be (for BTS) 맏형 - pronounced as mat-hyung, meaning the oldest hyung (형)- basically oldest older brother, which would be Jin 💜

Funny FYI: Jin is considered "the real Maknae" amongst the BTS members. RM and Jimin stated it once when the members interviewed eachother.

The beginning of Dionysus segment (starting with the Greek motif and Tae’s individual stage) is not live. It was all pre-recorded up to the start of the actual song Dionysus. Jimin’s was recorded as well. But he danced it live on stage as well.
There was an article (Allkpop) that said the cue sheet said Jimin's solo dance would be performed live, while the rest were prerecorded.
Tae also was seen telling Jungkook that Jimin was doing his performance live.
There were also fan cams of Jimin's performance that showed different angles.
I doubt they would show a prerecorded version if he was doing it live.

Jimin also pre recorded just as other members. But he changed his mind and requested his live performance will also be aired live. So Jimin’s pre recorded version was NOT aired. What people saw on the screen (and at home) and on the live stage were the same. RMs part was also aired live. As for the others, the pre recorded version was aired on the screen (and for people watching from home) but the other members also performed their part in front of the live audience (without stage props and in Dionysus outfit) while pre recorded version was being broadcast. I imagine the other members had to broadcast the pre recorded version due to some logistics (ex. stage props).

Darn. This isn’t on Patreon. I’m a bit behind but I hope you posted his reaction to the Dionysius performances somewhere sometime. Not my favorite song, but one of my favorite performances.
Maknae as you said it is actually more of an English pronounciation of the word. Apparently, the actual Korean pronunciation is closer to "mang-nae" (with the "a" being and "ah" sound as in "mug" instead of "ae" as in "bag"). The "k" turns into "ng" because of nasalization rules. But at this point I'd say that at least the kpop side of the internet sort of adopted that word into English with altered pronunciation, so the only people who are gonna correct you on that are insufferable language nerds like me 🤣🤣

This is probably one of the best live performances in history (the best). The best of the best artistically, musically and physically!

Jungkooks water dance was pre recorded otherwise he wouldn't have time to dry and re dress, the horses on stage part I believe was the other pre recorded part eg without audience in order not to spook the horse's on stage. I'm sure other's will tell us if other parts were also recorded before the audience entered.

I remember when I watched this performance live. I was like Wtf they are having individual stages? and then wtf there are a lot of dancers and cool props, Then wtf! they bringing freaking horses??? Whatttt? Imagine me trying not to scream at 6 am xd it was an insane performance🤯

I don’t think RM’s was live because of how the ARMY bombs looked. That and there is a video where he misses the floor and the stick goes between his legs … 😂 That might have been a rehearsal though (makes me chuckle to remember his expression). It might have been this performance because you only see him swing down. (OK, I admit it, I’ve seen this production a few too many times, I’m nitpickin’) 💜

I have never heard anything about the award show being prerecorded. Can you not hear the audience? There is a story why they have so much time.
Only some sections of the award show is pre-recorded not the whole thing. Bangtantv even has footage of when each of them came in earlier to do their recording of their parts and it shows them doing the sections that we saw and then leaving to go do their own things after. Apparently ARMYs can go into the venue extra extra early and see it so that's possibly what we're hearing. Either that, or it's the ARMYs reacting to seeing the footage up on the screens.
The last time my sister "did a thing." I had to carry her out of a honky-tonk for being way to drunk. I am a 43 year old lady, fireman carrying a completely inebriated 40 year old out of a bar at 2am. Her husband removed her from my car thankfully. Siblings calling after 10pm is never a good sign. Let me say a few things, first, I am so sorry you kept getting cut off and thrown off. I mean you think after this much time they would relax and just let it go, but nope they still have to be assholes about it. (Pardon my language).
Second, I notice you were having a little bit of a hard time with the word "Maknae". And even though u finally said it, you were off by a little bit...in Korea they have a hard a like us...more often than not it is said like "mock-nay."
As for the intro for "Dionysus," I don't know if you, but they all were portraying Greek gods. Not to mention as each one was shown the lights came down from the rafters...when they were all introduced it made the shape of a crown.

Each one was represented by both the song the preformed to as well as the surrounding stages. Yes Jimin performed Live, so did Suga, cause he right after Jimin, and RM because he had to present to the beginning of the song. When they were sitting at the table, it was the "council of the Gods."
You should check out their performance of "Anpanman," this performance is the reason why lightsticks from any fandom was banned.
