    FAQ:
    1) Why do this video? - Some people haved asked me to show if the factory programmer works, and this was my first time trying it, so I just switched on the camera. That's what I always do.
    2) Why doesn't Brymen allow users to update the firmware? - I don't know, you'll have to ask them. It's not like I haven't asked for that possibility (the answer was no, sorry). This is no different to virtualy every other manufacturer with a reprogrammable chip and an internal factory header. Just because the brymen header is more accesible doesn't make it any different.
    3) What does this video demonstrate? - It demonstrates that Brymens new 780 series can be factory and dealer upgraded via a pin header instead of an OTP chip traditionally used, or internal factory test pads. This is a GOOD step forward, as it allows dealers to ensure that shipped meters have the latest firmware if it ever gets updated.
    4) I'm pissed off that I can't upgrade the firmware myself, this is digusting! - Almost every meter on the market works like this, from practically every manufacturer. If you think your meter doesn't then you are wrong. Firmware occasionally gets changed, and if you buy a new meter now then it may have different firmware to one you bought last year. You are just often not aware of this. Again, giving the dealers the ability to do this is a step forward from most meters on the market and existing Brymen products.
    5) Why do you offer this meter for sale knowing this? - See 4) above. This is actually BETTER than my previously extremely popular BM235 which nobody got upset at that they couldn't upgrade the firmware. If you want a more open meter then try my 121GW, it's got a schematic, user firmware update, programming information, open protocol, and source code for the application software.

Thanks for the whole explanation and those on your blog cause I went there for the very first time for whatever reason cause I had not seen that before, all the amphour stuff and even older blog entries.
I guess you might have linked to it more than once but I had missed that for years I guess.
Firmware update is always a kind of emergency tool to get things right that had been overlooked.
And it is also a question of effort and gains cause check how long it takes to update your phone, raspberry, windows and even cars and what you will get out of it.
I recently had stopped all of them and have started my own schedule of "1 maintenance day" each quarter instead of constant update pressure. I might miss some features - but just for a maximum of 90 days and by avaerage 45 days, but I also recogniced that this one is faster than permanent wheel of updates and upgrades cause there are some that get 3 updates or more in 90 days. Of cause a software update is not the same as a firmware update of smarthome components, the car, a raspberry pi and other tools, but at the end it is roughly the same: effort versus gain

Thanks for giving us a more complete written explanation. I'm glad the header's there and accessible. If consumers were to find an edge case where there was an issue with the units that could be solved by way of a new firmware, they could release the information for those affected (doubtful such a case would be found). That would be cheaper for Brymen. And for those who really wants to mess around with firmware flashing, that can always be figured out in one way or another. So stop it, please.

As an ee I hate NDA's and closed firmware/ architectures BUT for DMM's and stuff used to determine risk factors allowing users to upgrade firmware is a hugely massively terrible idea...what if you Bork the meter but is has limited functionality and some one uses it to test a live connection and it doesn't indicate a voltage present and someone gets hurt or killed ...the legal throwback to the instrument manufacturer could be huge....not to mention someone got hurt which wouldn't have happened if the user hadn't tried to upgrade the firmware...yes I know we should all be using proving units but not many do in the field.
And yes DMM'S have been proved to be faulty straight from the manufacturer (fluke anyone) but at least the onus is definitely on the manufacturer to recall the product.

Coming from your logic, washing machine and microwave oven manufacturers should be sued each time someone decides to wash and then dry (if still alive) their domestic lovely cat/dog. Such situations are easily avoided by putting a disclaimer into the box, which states that MANUFACTURER DOESN'T HOLD ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR INAPPROPRIATE USER ACTIONS INCLUDING e.g. FIRMWARE UPGRADES. Yes, let user undertake the risks, if they decide to go for latest firmware. How come 121GW manufacturer is not afraid of lawful throwback, but Brymen pees in pants imagining thousand legal actions against them. C'mon, this sounds ridiculous.

The risk in production is within the modification of a product not intended for use.
You can not sue a manufacturer for using something outside of is intended use.
A washer and microwave are its intended use. Unless it shorts and burns the house down or blows the front or melts your face while normal operation then its not able to be sued. It is easy to sit on the fence with this one, but I was surprised you didn’t see the elephant in the room - that is - the safety and liability issue. As an electrician I would be reluctant to use a multi meter that had the potential to be hacked in any way. Also, I’m sure that any company that produces a branded product would not want too be held liable or even potentially damaging the brand for any accidents that occurred though the mis use of its product.

I don't like 9v batteries, they are expensive for the amount of energy they contain and almost always have crappy snap connectors that get loose with age, or the wire gets busted. Meters that work on a couple of AAs are by far the best solution IMO.

Actually, it is quite embarrassing for a company like Brymen to not let their customers update their expensive meters' firmwares to latest versions. So, if your brand new shiny Brymen meter appears to have a bug, you'll probably going to end up living with that, because no one gonna give you a new meter, nor your dealer is going to have your meter reprogrammed to the latest fw. This is so stupid nowadays. I was about to buy BM789, but I read they've modified the backlight timeout in latest fw. Tomorrow they'll find some critical bug and fix it, and so on. The rule here is to never rush buying newly released products, especially from such unscrupulous companies like Brymen. Wait a year or two, read the forums and only then lay down your hard earned money.

I don't get it, I understand the "right to repair" thing, but this doesn't stop you from buying the chip (pre-programmed) from Brymen to "repair" your device, if the device was shipped with firmware version A and it works out of the box and does everything it claims, then firmware version B is not going to make that much difference to you, if there was a bug fix or significant feature enhancement that didn't require a change of hardware then you'd contact Brymen direct, and if they saw merit in your request provide you with the means or place to take it to to provide the upgrade. Perhaps it was more convenient / cheaper to use flash than OTP, i've seen OTP more expensive on some MCU's than flash variants. Maybe i'm missing something but I don't understand the hate.

@@adamp1440 I don't know, does Brymen support RTR? But that isn't on Dave. I have multimeters that are decades old, it might have bugs in it but I couldn't care less, it works absolutely fine for what I need it for, if it didn't then i'd just get a new one or if it was new enough return it.

    • @alerighi
      @alerighi 3 роки тому

I don't understand why not making firmware user upgradable. It's more expensive for the manufacturer the risk of possibly reclaiming thousands of products for a firmware bug than providing the user the tools to upgrade it. Also even if you don't have to recall the product, having the firmware user upgradable would let you start production even if the stable firmware is not ready, or if some features are still missing: the user when he receives the product can just upgrade it.
And I understand years ago, but these days there is no excuse. The only more complex thing is that you need to provide the user with a simpler way to upgrade the firmware, in particular not requiring a particular programmer, that is usually done via interfaces like bluetooth/Wi-Fi (that these days are very cheap) or via a standard TTL serial cable. Of course in both situations you have to have a bootloader and a double partition, but it should be the standard these days.

It's one thing to use a OTP rom to save some money on production, but if you're going to spend whatever extra it is for the eeprom then why block the function? What kind of benefit could Brymen possibly be getting by blocking access to this?
At the end of the day I don't think there's going to be any real difference in what firmware you're using from an end user perspective. It's just the principle of the matter. @@EEVblog So either early adopters have inferior products compared to later buyers of the firmware updates are completely pointless, if they're not significant enough to affect early adopters then what's the point of them. This is even more of a factor if they allow dealers to make updates, why isn't the latest firmware from the factory good enough? Why would the dealer need to update something that isn't considered a significant problem? If it's significant enough that a dealer is deemed to need to update it then the user should be able to update it. And yes I know "continuous product improvement" is a thing and usually mentioned in the small print but what that generally means is "we may optimise processes/materials to make this thing cheaper for us to make while still selling it to you at the same price" .That wouldn't normally affect firmware, firmware changes usually cost money, rarely save it (yes there are exceptions, a firmware change could remove the need for some physical parts so a net cost saving) so a company would only do them if considered really necessary.
