      @@dadhands mom is an artist, mainly oils and pastels and fairly well known in her state. She is excited to try to blend the two. We are both having problems with the swivel knife but that other type may be the solution

      @@dadhands I think I'll try a cheap Excell brand on some thin leather before dropping $100+ tho. That should at least give a little example

    I probably should have watched this before diving into deep end of the pool. Did a little thing yesterday not great but to non leather workers it is amazing.

    This is a very helpful video! When I started out tooling last year and not knowing really anything about the tools, I bought a lot of tools that I didn't even need. I didn't know what they were and was kind of buying blind. I've been so slow and getting to finally tool because the cost adds up, there are so many tools you need. so thank you for sharing some lower priced options. I now have the yolk-less swivel knife and it's a game changer. Some videos I'd love to see are, general tips about how to sharpen your tools, general maintenance of tools, how to marble leather, some fun exercises for beginner tooling. Thank you for these rock'n videos, I have woken up on Friday mornings excited for your videos, I look forward to them- Smashley Pumpkins

      Where did you find a yokeless swivel knife? I've been searching online for two weeks and I have only found traditional swivel knives.

    Watching again cause it so good! But I noticed that the shaft of the swivel knife is offset from the center of the blade. That could be why I'm having issues with it turning as easily. Going on to plan C lol

    Hey Melissa: Another really helpful video. I have had some Tandy stamps for over 15 years. Never used them. I will bring them out and try them. I watched a video from 'Bigfoot?' and he never used a swivel knife. Just a fixed blade in some kind of handle. So, hating the traditional swivel knives, I made a few. Question: Is there a reason you double tap every stamp? A light tap and then a heavier one? Is that just how your have developed you technique or is that standard for tooling?

    • @dadhands
      @dadhands  2 роки тому

      That’s cool to hear! Swivel knives aren’t totally necessary, everyone’s going to find different tools and techniques they like to use, there’s really no right or wrong way about it. The double tap is just my technique. I talked a little about it in the previous video. I prefer to tap more often than too hard the first time, you can always tap stamps deeper, it’s near impossible to back off/erase a stamped area.
