  • Alaska has not had wood bison for more than a century. SCI Foundation has aided the wood bison reintroduction effort for the past 10 years and is a member of the Wood Bison Restoration Advisory Group. Through its contributions, Safari Club has applied hunter dollars towards the maintenance of the bison holding facility, the care of the bison while in captivity, and the relocation of bison to the wild!

      I was one of them, i thought they weren't.. now they need to bring Musk oxen as well to complete the picture.. they brought some of them to Russia when some scientist discovered they were also part of the ecosystem

    Thank you SCI Foundation and Alaska for working this project. It just thrills me to see bison being reintroduced to American landscapes. I hope they thrive. They are wonderful animals and part of our American heritage that we nearly lost forever.

    American hunters do much of the hands on, get down and dirty, environmental work. Much respect. Quality Deer Management Association has a journal "Whitetail Journal" with great environmental projects and research.
    Whatever improves the environment for deer improves it for all parts of the ecology ... just as the bison do.
    Loved the flower covered head blinds!

    Under half a million Bison/buffalo left in N.America which sounds like many, but in 1700 there were 40 million and the 1600's closer to 50 million. In 1920 they were almost gone.

    If their numbers are finally high enough the bison will open up the forests by themselves and won't need to rely on preopened habitat any longer. Wild grazers are so important to maintain open areas for native meadows and the associated insects, birds etc.

      @scifoundation620  6 років тому +3

      Great question! Yes, the collars get tighter as the bison grows. However, our researchers make sure to capture them and re-adjust the collar as needed. This is true for every study that involves collaring wildlife. Thank you for your support and please feel free to visit our blog First For Wildlife on Wordpress!

    • @scifoundation620
      @scifoundation620  6 років тому +1

      Brian Fairey Yes. SCI Foundation assisted in bringing the bison to Alaska from Alberta. We helped by feeding them while in captivity, expanding and outfitting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and finally transporting them by truck to the release site! Please feel free to check out our blog #FirstForWildlife @wordpressdotcom and enter “Wood Bison” in the search bar to see how this was achieved!

    Keep the wolves off of them!

    • @abrother9821
      @abrother9821 3 роки тому +4

      Absolutely not! Unless a species is highly endangered or nearing extinction, protecting them from predation is extremely counter-productive. Wolves, grizzles, and other large-mammal predators will help cull the herd of older, weaker, and sickly animals. This is vital to the overall health of the herd. Conservators recognize and respect that thriving ecosystems naturally go through cycles where predator and prey experience population growth. The growth of one serves as a healthy counterpoint to the growth of the other. The right goal is balance.
