You’re immediate reaction to that line, was incredibly close to mine, the difference being i heard it during the end credits, and was catatonic, not realizing it was a Penny song until that very line.
I believe my exact words were “F*** you Jeff!!!” As i proceeded to cry

Fun fact: Martin Gonzalez, the guitarist for Ok Goodnight also contributed several score tracks over volume 8, including a good chunk of the final battle and the track that plays at the end as Mantle gets flooded. His score work is some of my favorite in the volume.
Also HIGHLY recommend checking out more Ok Goodnight music. They don't have very many songs out yet, but they too never miss.
Also the guitarist and producer for Atomic Guava, another prog metal band who have some BOPS

- Be Strong and Hit Stuff - During the JNRO + Winter + Emerald vs Ironwood fight in Ep 12. Definitely a Nora song, with perhaps a bit of Emerald in there. A refreshingly lighter song given the rest of the soundtrack.
- The Truth - Played in episode 6 during the Cinder flashback. Very short but it honestly gets across its point rather nicely. Nowhere else you could really go with that. Love when Casey’s voice gets all eerie.
- Treasure - Played in episode 11 during the reunion. It’s a bit generalized for what couple it’s specifically talking about but I definitely view this as a Bee song, Blake’s answer to All That Matters which was very much Yang’s perspective at the time back in V5. Again, Casey’s range as a vocalist is just insane.
- Friend - This was just a for the crew to rub salt in our wounds even during the end credits. A Penny song. How dare they. Like this song is literally designed to hurt. But it’s such a sweet Penny and Ruby song. All the V1 callbacks. Owwww. God, I’m so sad we won’t get more with them. All the feels, indeed. I’m literally crying.
- Awake - Episode 6 actually during the Cinder vs Rhodes fight. And yes, this is by Casey’s band OK Goodnight, and they decided to use it for the show. Not my type of music but no one can deny the talent.
I’m so excited for V9, you have no idea. It feels like forever ago since we got that teaser and those clips. This season looks insane, and like we’re going to get so much needed introspection for our kids here. And more trauma of course.
Can’t believe you’re caught up man. Hope to see you when the show comes back.

Ok Goodnight has some truly incredible songs "Day and Night" being my favorite until Awake came out.
I know Casey is so talented. I remember hearing Rapture their first song and was blown away, but Awake just hits the vibes for me.
There's a really pretty version of Awake, with just Casey, another singer and piano. I think it's called "Awake (stripped)" and is on the OK Goodnight youtube channel. Really worth checking out.
But yeah, it's so weird how cheerful Friend is, but that somehow makes it horribly sad, given the context... For me, the way they did the Penny death was a bit weak... The bit with Winter was pretty sweet and gets me to tear up a bit on rewatch, but Friend pretty much causes me to break into tears every time I've heard it >_

Man, I am so late to this but, this was a great reaction to the ost. Once Friend started I was bursting out tears while I was doing dishes aaaaaaa.
Oh good, finally found the rest of the VOD. Don’t really have a lot to add since you’re already through everything.
I do recommend doing Chibi next. Ice Queendom DUBS seem to be okay on YT so far but the sample size is low, so I’d try doing one episode at a time and see if they get through.
And by the way… I think playing RWBY Arrowfell would be a good gaming project. It’s pretty short, I would guess no more than 10 hours gameplay wise.
And I can’t believe nobody said this but you heard it from CRWBY: Volume 9 will be… cheesy. :D Out with a Yang!

Anyone know how many times penny begged for death?
Only two times actually: The first time when she thought she was going to die to the virus before Ruby and friends found the Jaune boosting work around and came up with 'The Plan', and the second time when Cinder had impaled her with those claws and though Jaune 'could' heal her, Weiss (who was already very low on aura) would have to fend Cinder off all by herself for however long Jaune's healing would take.
If there are any other occasions I could not find them.
There is a point early in the volume where she suggests surrendering the Relic to Salem in hopes Salem will leave (shot down hard by Oscar pointing out that they can't trust Salem to actually do that and it'll cause Atlas to drop which kind of defeats the point) and the moment where she stops and instead of just rushing off, instead asks her dad to understand why she wants to risk her life to lift up Amity Colosseum, which arguably could be stretched to be seen as 'suicidal' behaviours but to be blunt, I think that's a hell of a reach in both cases and all instances of Penny begging for death are pretty specific to 'when she's actively already dying without assistance and believes the Maiden powers are at risk' so.
