I myself wore a properly-fitted corset for some time to help with back pain and posture after checking with my doctor. During that time, I didn't appreciate dealing with uninformed comments from stubborn people who didn't want to learn.

Corsets weaken core muscles, because you don't need those muscles when a corset is supporting you. But if you have back pain, or are standing for long hours, a corset is a godsend, because it supports your back.
It really depends on how you wear it. If you're pulling it as tight as possible to have a super small waist then yeah you're gonna have a hard time. If you're tightening it just to the point of support, it's just a complicated bra. Materials also matter. I'm pretty sure noblewomen's corsets were different from working women's. I first wore a corset in a stage performance and I was surprised how great it supported my body, it also kept me in good posture without even thinking about it. it felt surprisingly and ironically freeing.
@Virgo.doodles right?! I learned a long time ago that if you can't take your straps down & still be supported than its not a good/supportive bra (as all the support is supposed to come from the band, not the straps. Straps are only there to keep things positioned, not provide support). It's in the engineering! This is why the bigger the breast volume, the morelikely you need to be wearing longline bras or corsets instead. It's made a whole world of difference in bra shopping even though most companies don't even offer a size that fits me.
I think another thing to take into consideration with corsets and how they make the body look is that the beauty ideals for body fat were very different back in the day. Very few women were trying to starve the pounds off and instead let their corset squish it around. Also that baleen stays how it's bent when heat (including body heat) is applied so corsets would mold themselves to the wearer's body. If your corset was boned with baleen, a custom fit was inevitable
The problem that I think a lot of people have especially with the idea of bending over is a lot of their movement comes from curving the spine instead of hinging at the hips. But I'm sure people who wore corsets regularly and had to have that kind of movement available did the movement often enough that flexibility wasn't an issue

It makes sense really. My mom had full thoracic spinal fusion after a car accident we were in and she can still do all kinds of stuff, though she has to bend at the waist. I guess a corset is a less extreme version of that.
The irony is for most things you’re supposed to bend at the waist and use your legs for any weight That way the psoas can work like the giant resistance band it is and take torque off your (healthy) spine proper
I believe *some* corsets are able to be worn comfortably, but the corset I wore once I could barely stand back up once I had sat down. High end custom corsets made *for your body* fit and are comfortable to move in like this, or the right kind of corset with the right fighting because they are made for you, but if you don't have enough money to buy yourself a good corset, no. You can't move very well. it'll pinch you in places and cut into you in a way that makes it hard to breathe or makes your stomach hurt. So this is only true to an extent sorry but 🤷
I couldn't afford a high-end custom corset, but the one I got through Lucy's Corsetry is fantastic and runs $140 (not cheap, but far from high-end). Granted, if I try to sit on a cushy sofa, yeah, I'm going to have trouble, but that's an issue that even fashion historians talk about.
I think the misconception comes from movies and TV that women were super tightened into these corsets and couldn't breathe. In reality, if fitted correctly, they're comfy and help support and give good posture.
There's a channel I watched a few vids on who said "Corsets are bras". The reasoning is, based on newspaper adverts and catalogues, corsets came in as many varieties, for as many purposes as bras. Comfort, shaping, cheap, expensive, various colours, sexy, fashion extremes, sporting, maternity, nursing, soft, stiff boning - these are all option she found evidence of, and all of those have examples in modern bras.
People mix up old corsets and the ones used for shapewear today to get a size 5 inch waist. That's not the same corsets. The old ones with a nice firm boning though would make you keep your back straight. I feel like that would help with working in them so that you weren't putting extra strain on your back by bending with your back.
One day, in the distant future, women are going to say these sorts of things about bras. (bras can be very good for structural support if fitted and shaped correctly, we just live in a society of mass produced garments that are made poorly or are simply intended for sexual gratification, don't come for me)
Regardless, corsets hurt the bejeepers out of my lower back or any time my back is too straight for too long (even sleeping on my back) being forced or expected (really, the same thing in that time period) to wear a corset back then would absolutely devastate me, and I can't be the only woman in history with lower back problems...
Corsets for working class women were built for more mobility where a lady’s corset was built for the standard movement and most women only tightened them up enough to support their chest only the vain and rich would tight lace. Which is why I’m Cinderella 2 Cinderella is uncomfortable in the corset they give her because one she is still used to wearing a working class corset and two they probably did it to tight because they didn’t know her preference yet so when she decides to do things to ease the pressure on her she probably switched to the corset she’s used to or loosened the one she was wearing so it could still do it’s job but wasn’t uncomfortable.
so, im a dancer, and one of my costumes is literally a full on corset, and i do a needle in it (think scorpion but straight leg). so yeah, id say you can move in them
Yep, I have no trouble cleaning in my corset, and that laced down an inch or two! It's much better for our backs to bend at the hips rather than the waist anyway! (I also have no issues putting my shoes on. It's not comfortable, but I can do it.)
I *adore* how everyone goes "IT WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE" and then turn around and wear spanks or skims. As if moder shape wear was the most comfortable thing to exist in. Never mind the fact that corsets are actually more beneficial due to the even distribution of weight especially for our big chested people.
Yeah I think people on all sides of the debate should use modern bras and shape wear as a point of reference when we discuss “comfort”. Most people don’t find any of these options as comfortable as wearing none of them, but we have to wear something because society ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
People act like corsets were suffocating women and deforming organs when in reality they were most likely just squishing their fat. You can literally press your hands as hard as you can against the fat all around your abdomen and it won’t hurt you. Yet people act like they were crushing ribs😭
There us an element of truth in that though. If you wore a tight corset long enough ( or anything putting presure) , it can potentially move ribs and therefore squish organs, especially during young age when bones are still growing and are more flexible.

I'm a plus-sized woman who carries her fat in her stomach. I have a "corset" and when I bend or sit it rolls up. Is that common or is it because it's a lingerie corset?

I read the comment wrong and read “how did they clean their corsets” which… I’m now curious about
Bernadette and Karolina would approve of this
It makes sense really. My mom had full thoracic spinal fusion after a car accident we were in and she can still do all kinds of stuff, though she has to bend at the waist. I guess a corset is a less extreme version of that.
The irony is for most things you’re supposed to bend at the waist and use your legs for any weight
That way the psoas can work like the giant resistance band it is and take torque off your (healthy) spine proper
Idk where i heard this but "WHO CAME UP WITH THE PRASE 'BEND AT THE WAIST' YOU DON'T BEND AT THE WAIST YOU BEND AT THE HIPS"
Saving this to send to people when they say, "bUt CoRsEtS wErE sO rEsTrIcTiVe, HoW cOuLd AnYoNe WoRk In ThEm?"
I would 10/10 prefer corsets over bra's. Don't understand the hate on corsets, lol
Are people confusing corsets with modern girdles? The modern elasticity in girdles just keeps constricting tighter and tighter, the corset doesn't.
Your home is furnished VERY similar to the one I grew up in! Our furniture was from 1820's to 1910ish. I miss it.
I have a couple corsets and I can do cartwheels and bridges in them they're pretty flexible and hard to break unless you're trying
I think the misconception comes from movies and TV that women were super tightened into these corsets and couldn't breathe. In reality, if fitted correctly, they're comfy and help support and give good posture.
Just bc you can't really bend at the waist doesn't mean you can't bend!! It's actually far better for the body to bend at the hips anyway
I still have difficulty reaching certain things in a corset, but it does help with pain a lot.
Thanks for breaking down the discorsett
I don’t think people realize that boning has a little bit of flexibility. Like you’re not frozen in place when you put it on. 💀
I think it’s because people now have a tendency to bend at the waist rather than the hips
Legally blonde classic😍🥰🥰😂😂
so, im a dancer, and one of my costumes is literally a full on corset, and i do a needle in it (think scorpion but straight leg). so yeah, id say you can move in them
Yep, I have no trouble cleaning in my corset, and that laced down an inch or two! It's much better for our backs to bend at the hips rather than the waist anyway! (I also have no issues putting my shoes on. It's not comfortable, but I can do it.)
I think people forget we can bend at the hips and not always the waist
Thing is you’re not supposed to round your back when you bend over. It’s like wearing a bigger lifting belt
Bend and snap? Works every time! 😂
Women also excercised in corsets
THE LEGALLY BLONDE REFRENCE AHH
Also why you bending your back to pick things up isn’t that bad for your back?
She didn't bend her back, the course that made it impossible for her to bend her back or Arch it. She bent at her hips
😂 The "Bend and Snap" had me rolling! I forget, was that from the "Legally Blonde" movie?
I *adore* how everyone goes "IT WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE" and then turn around and wear spanks or skims. As if moder shape wear was the most comfortable thing to exist in. Never mind the fact that corsets are actually more beneficial due to the even distribution of weight especially for our big chested people.
Yeah I think people on all sides of the debate should use modern bras and shape wear as a point of reference when we discuss “comfort”. Most people don’t find any of these options as comfortable as wearing none of them, but we have to wear something because society ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My largest concern would be the amount of layers and the skirts. Overheating? How do you move around in all those layers?
Wearing natural fibers certainly helped! Synthetic fabrics didn’t exist yet and natural ones are a lot more breathable
She pulled out the bend and snap Jennifer Coolidge is shaking
Your so adorable
People act like corsets were suffocating women and deforming organs when in reality they were most likely just squishing their fat. You can literally press your hands as hard as you can against the fat all around your abdomen and it won’t hurt you. Yet people act like they were crushing ribs😭
There us an element of truth in that though. If you wore a tight corset long enough ( or anything putting presure) , it can potentially move ribs and therefore squish organs, especially during young age when bones are still growing and are more flexible.
I can bend… and snap 😂
I have back problems and I would wear a corset if I could…
Etsy has several sellers. I found one around $200 and it's a simple historical design. That's cheap compared to most reproductions. One I really really want is an 1890's one that's $400. The pretty housemaid one is $650 😭😭
I'm a plus-sized woman who carries her fat in her stomach. I have a "corset" and when I bend or sit it rolls up. Is that common or is it because it's a lingerie corset?
It's because it's a lingerie corset and it might not be properly fitted to you. Does it have any boning?
Imma be honest i draw a lot and use you as a model since your form and attire is what I need the most 😅❤
Actually... That's how you're supposed to bend down...
It’s so dumb. People forget these were bras🤦🏻♀️
"OMG!!! The Bend and Snap! Works every time" 😂
I think most have incredibly stiff hip flexors so they bend at the waist and not at the hips. When I still wore corsets I found they really helped with loosening up me ol' flexy beeshes
I will always say this but, IF THEY DIDN'T WORK FOR THE WOMEN THAN THEY WOULD'VE MADE SOMETHING ELSE!!
People forget you don't bend from the waist. You bend at the hips
If I am at home, doing housework, not expecting company, I'm not wearing a corset.
Yeah, bend and snap…. your back
