PART TWO LIVE NOW!! ua-cam.com/video/6YKIjshaIZg/v-deo.html
I happen to know that a huge trick of the trade for the industry is to use vaseline While swatching for videos or pictures. They put it on their fingers (or pre mix some with the eyeshadow) and it causes a really intense and shiny swatch that also goes much further down the arm (to give the illusion that the pigment is so much more intense than it already was making you think that a small amount of product will go much further than some other brands or palettes. Basically the illusion of a better bang for your buck)
Wow that’s crazy!! I’ve never heard of that but now I want to try it. I wonder if the Vaseline will make the shadow in the pan weird.
@@AmyLovesMakeupyou could also apply vaseline on your arm if you are concerned of ruining your eyeshadow
Playing in makeup by Yolando is known for her endless swatches, I believe that she admitted she uses Vaseline to make her swatches go farther
That's so sketchy for companies to do this.
Also plain lighting. There are sooooo many types of light sources, and they make a really huge difference in effect. Same for the optics.
In the first video the swatch was slightly out of focus and lit by a very intense white flash, versus Amy’s sharp focus and diffuse light.
They tend to use low lighting with a single light (flashlight) shining on the arm to bring out the shimmers. Some companies will admit to it, and some just say "theres no tricks involved"🤦🏼♀️
I knew it had to be some lighting involved, think about how different an diamond ring can look depending on the lighting.
What would be appreciated is if they showed the swatches of non matte under different lighting. Daylight, Office, Romantic. Be helpful to avoid unintended Disco Ball eyelids.
Yup, the lighting the filters and the Vaseline can make the product look COMPLETELY different.
I love Pat McGrath’s whole aesthetic, her videos and photos always have a dreamy vibe because they’re super filtered. But then this same thing makes the brand’s swatches totally useless.
It is a ring light, which gives a nice overall shine and even lighting, but does catch the sparkle in the eye shadows.
Before you comment that my lighting is different than the brands… I KNOW. This video is to help you be an informed consumer to what it actually looks like in real life. Most of us are not walking around in professional studio lights all day long. I did use a ring light and two soft box lights so you can see the colors and what they look like in person but the idea that I need to have the exact same lighting as brands is ridiculous. I love the brands I featured I will continue to buy from them but that doesn’t mean we can’t look at the difference.
I love this video!!!
THANK YOU for making this video! Obviously I thought about the lighting too, but seeing your swatches in REAL life was way more informative. I'm often left feeling disappointed when I get a palette online and nowadays I always double-triple check pictures, swatches, videos and everything I can find before I purchase. I found this type of video to be extremly helpful and again, thank you for making it and thank you for being honest and real even with palettes that get a lot of online hype.
Yeah, I think you could probably replicate their swatches with the right lighting, but the point is that regular lighting would give a more accurate swatch. They're swatching for maximum impact, not daily reality.
In addition to intensity of sparkle, pigment and shift, I am often disappointed in palettes for not being as cool-toned or as bright in tone as I thought they'd be. Even with watching, like, ten UA-cam videos about a palette, because everyone has different camera settings and lighting. I've started to realize who has cooler settings, who has warmer settings, and who is using lights that show off sparkle better than they'd look in normal diffuse light. Great video!
That’s true lighting can change so much!
Same! I feel like ND is notorious for showing a palette as more cool toned than it is, definitely not the only one, but I've been let down sooo many times with ND palettes.
Same its usually cold colors being warm when i buy or swatch them or opposite which i hate because i need good cold light browns and contour but they always end up being too orange for me
it was really satisfying to see the indie swatches absolutely kick the ass of all the ND swatches. really makes you wonder if the swatches ND puts on insta are literally mixed with better eyeshadows.
🤣🤣
I learned the hard way with xenon that ND palettes aren't what they seem in pics. I still like her formulas but it isn't anything utterly amazing.
Natasha denona is an independent brand
@@amya989 I always tell people the same thing. I think people get confused because natasha is larger and at retailers and people think of indie as small companies. She still independently owns her brand.
I just bought the retro pallets and they are by far the best eye shadows I have ever used. A swatch is not your eye. I own a dip powder company and I’m swatching all the time. You bet I’m using a great camera, great lighting and perfect application. You have to show your colors in the best light possible. Period. Sliding a color down my arm is nothing like putting it on a tiny area. It’s just a swatch.
I always look at creators swatches that I trust to get an idea of what the palette really looks like before i buy it. When doing product photography, there are always tricks they do to make it look better.
Hey yall I just want to reiterate that swatches are not everything I love every palette I featured in this video, but I do think it’s important to be an informed consumer. Enjoy!! Oh and if you’ve been interested in Glaminatrix Fairy Lights it’s restocking again finally tonight at 6pm EST!!
Which brands have your favorite shimmers?
omg what a cool video concept! lighting, angles and bases can cause such different results, up to beeing deceitful. more often than not im like huh this cant be right... especially shimmers.
I wish more creators would do this kind of video. This should be a TAG!!
Loved this concept, super fun and interesting! This is why I never find shopping at Sephora in person to be very enticing, things are rarely as good IRL as they are in marketing images
Agreed! There’s some brands on Sephora where I already know the difference is huge before I buy so at least I’m not disappointed 🤣🤣
this is SUCH A great series. i hope you do more of these. cuz yes. advertising and photography can be SO deceiving. thank you.
My biggest pet peeve is when brands and creators double swatch -- pretend to do a live swatch but there's already a built up swatch underneath. I've seen Lethal do it and put me off wanting to try them. Why is it so hard to be honest? Or even juat post photos then
Oh yeah that’s a frustrating one!
My thoughts exactly! Oden‘s Eye does it too and I don‘t understand it. Their shadows are so nice, why to use tricks like that?
But if the shadows are nice anyway in person and perform well on the eyes, then who cares what this company does to sell these shadows?? It’s a business after all.
Jewelry makers do the same, clothing companies, etc. It’s advertisement after all so it’s meant to always enhance the product . If the product was bad though, then that would be a problem cause it would be misleading, but it’s not, so again, who cares. Y’all are looking way too much into it.
You have to use a light on the swatches to intensify the sparkle. I learned this with buying slimes as well.
Ok yessss... This 💯 needs to be a series!! I mean honestly, that's one of the reasons that I like to follow you because even some of the more recent pallettes, like I'm going to buy them. You said they were gorgeous and they're gorgeous. But your swatches were definitely to me more real than so many other swatches I've seen, so I appreciate that. Please keep that coming. Are definitely to me more real than so many. I just like to see the real deal! I want to see what makeup really looks like because I don't have you know and IG set up at my house and I'm not going to follow myself around with a light😂. Xx
I looooove that you did this video!!! I wish more creators would do videos like this!! Thank you!
The ND Lighting is super harsh and bright as well which enhances the shine and reflectivity.
This was so fascinating to see! I saw the other comment about using Vaseline on your arm and that could be interesting for another video. See how much closer it is there. Although their ultra specific lighting and blurring is always going to skew their results, and it’s so helpful to see how they actually swatch under normal conditions!
I think this is such a great video concept. I was honestly kind of disappoint with my first ND palette (midi retro) because I feel like it never looks as good even when compared to videos on UA-cam. I still like her formula and bought the I need a nude for that reason, but I was prepared for it to not be as good as it looked.
I love this type of video! When I'm having a quiet evening at home, I love getting all my pallettes out and watching them! More videos like this please 🎉❤
I love this video concept!! I would definitely appreciate if you did more of these in thr future 🖤
It seems like I’m getting really good feedback so I think I will do it more in the future
The kind of lighting used has 99% to do with it! All of the brand swatch videos with the except of the cosmic brushes photo were taken with a bright direct light which basically mimics direct sunlight and most things look sparklier in that lighting because brighter direct lighting bounces off the particles a lot stronger. If in a future video like this you showed your swatches in your current lighting and then in sunlight you’d see that the sunlight is closer in to what the brands’ swatches are. Personally~ I don’t think it’s deceitful because realistically in real life you’d be walking around with all kinds of lighting. I notice if i unbox some eyeshadows in my kitchen they look so sparkly and then when I see them in undercast window lighting im like aww man😂
That being said: faking level of pigmentation is deceitful. Swatches really aren’t everything like you said! I’ve had many experiences with shades not swatching well but applying nicely and vise versa
Yes that’s very true the light definitely makes a difference for sparkles but I feel like normally I can see good metallic shine in my lighting and with the ND there was still quite a difference. I’ll definitely try and show different lighting if I do another video like this in the future.
@@badtothebrowdidn't you do a similar video (expectations versus reality) with the Looxi shadows?
I agree with you, Milly. Cool to see you show up on this video. I personally love your setup and Riley from seekingshifts because the products look true to life when I get them home. I’ve definitely been disappointed in misleading swatches from brands like chaos makeup though. They’re turning up the saturation way higher though so that’s blatantly misleading. Not just showcasing in ideal lighting.
@@sharonflowers66 yeah but looxi was notorious for their misleading swatches though.
This is the content we need to make better informed purchasing decisions! I used to live in a city with a Sephora but now I live in a town where the closest Sephora is 3.5/4 hours away so being able to swatch in store is not a luxury I have at the moment. And Ive always been a hesitant with indie brands. So this content is exactly what I need. Thank you! 🤍 - a new subscriber 😊
Im so happy you enjoyed the video and thank you for subscribing ❤️
@@AmyLovesMakeup I am currently getting caught up with all your content and I am loving it!! Keep the excellent work babe!! 🤩😍🤩
i loveeee the fairy lights and minka palettes!!! i don’t own wonderland yet, because i’m waiting for a restock. i still want and need the ND INAN and zendo palettes in my life. ✨✨✨
You KNOW Adept are gonna shine! ❤
I wasn’t even worried about them 🤣🤣
@@AmyLovesMakeup - we know what’s up! 😜
omg I remember doing this for the first time with the ABH Norvina palette (the soft velvet one, not the pro palettes). I obsessed for weeks on the photos and the ones she posted on IG on her thigh and arms near the pool.
This is why I always appreciate watching a few UA-cam videos about a palette with different swatches and lighting and eye looks to get a better idea for how it works in real life, especially when it’s a palette I can’t go test in Sephora or ulta.
I have several Natasha Denona palettes and like the way most of them look and perform, even if they don’t look exactly like the promo shots. And I think in general there are some palettes on different companies that actually look better in real life than they do in website photos. I can’t think of an example off the top of my head, but some shadows are just hard to photograph accurately.
Very helpful. When i try to decide on buying a Palette These type of swatches are what i look for. One, to see the colors, get a feel for the colorstory but two, to try to recreate byop style if i have these shades, if i even like them, if i what what im missing etc
Thank you for this!!! It's so hard as a consumer to figure out what the actual product is going to look like irl, because a lot of brands obviously want to make it look as intense as possible for social media, as you said. Some indie brands especially don't have the best swatches/product photos on their site (though they're getting better), so I've definitely bought shades that looked one way online and I was disappointed/surprised with what I received
I really liked this video and would love to see you make this series!
It looks like a double or triple swatch from the ones natasha denona did. And maybe even wet? Lol yea and extremely bright lighting. Of course they gonna make it look the best lol. I love this video idea!!
The Minka palette is definitely awesome, something I will definitely buy in the future
I loved this video thank you so much. Please do a series ❤
Blend bunny cosmetics have amazing swatches! Also I loved this video!
Okay seriously, it's obviously all in the light. You have to have a special neutral and very bright light shining on the swatches to get it to look like she did
I agree that lighting matters but that isn’t everything. Lighting doesn’t make a swatch go from your wrist to your elbow 🤣🤣
This is a great idea that I havent seen done before. It could definitely help with fomo.
Thank you!
I wish you had some bright light’s shining on your swatches because they definitely do on the brand ones. This was a fantastic and important video. Once I was able to see the differences between my own palettes versus what was shown on line, my FOMO was totally more manageable.
I did have a ring light and two soft box lights but if I film this again I’ll try to add another one and see the difference
I absolutely LOVE this video idea! Those damn swatches get me every time 😮
Please do more of this style video! This helps calm down my need for the palette and my wallet thanks you. ❤
I loved this video. Yes 👍🏽 please make this a series
Such a freaking help & interesting video!!! Thanks for your work!👏🏽
The Minka one looks gorge
It really is
Yes. Super helpful. I am also pale so loving the realistic swatches!
Yepp, they premix the shades with Vaseline and use EXCESSIVE lighting
This was a clever idea for a video. That is so true, the swatches often look so much more intense from the brand websites and IG.
Beautiful shining and colours . The glitters …❤❤❤❤❤
Damn, my girl here doing the Lord's work
Thanks for showing me new brands to try!
very interesting video format - instagram vs. reality swatches - that could be a series !
Loved it! We stand by the truth and ethics. Please, make more vídeos like this one. ❤😊😊
Thank you for doing a video like this!! Especially recently I've noticed sooo many swatch videos with either very low or super bright lighting that produce gorgeous looks BUT that isn't what anyone is working with irl. It's also frustrating how many swatch videos I've been seeing that are also out of focus leading to shadows looking super glittery. I want to see what something is ACTUALLY going to look like.
I absolutely love this concept for a video... I never go by what I see from the company but it does beg to question if they clearly know it's what we want why do they not manufacture that😂
Great video idea! Love swatch parties, love shiny, shifty multichromes and metallics all day, every day! I knew Adept would pass the test. I figured ND and PM might fall short. 😊❤ I hope to see more videos like this even with "older" releases.
Thank you so much for do this video! I loved the concept of it and the content!! Would LOVE to see more of this type of video! ❤❤
Yup, it happened to me with both I need a nude and Winter Wonderland.
I usually wait til you do swatches because I know I can trust you! 🎉
I actually waited after a few content creators swatched the ND palette without lighting tricks. So I bought it knowing that It wasn't as great as ND Insta swatches.
It was the other way around with Cosmic brushes. As those sold out pretty quickly, I trusted the website and some content creator that I'm now sure edits her swatches. It was my first time trying the brand. Definitely most shimmers were not what I saw. Still happy with the palette, as I don't think I can ask more for that price point. But I prefer realistic swatches, that way my expectations can be more accurate.
Yeah, I totally agree. I love that Amy does live swatches so we can see exactly how much building she is (or generally isn't) doing. I try not to get too annoyed with other creators who use "tricks" for their swatches because I recognize that people like to see swatches for different reasons. While I may generally be looking at swatches to see the opacity or reflectivity of the shades, some people are looking at swatches to really analyze the color story of a palette, or to see just how intense the shades can go when built up, or just because it is aesthetically pleasing to look at beautifully presented swatches. All these reasons are also valid, but it just means that I personally need to take certain creators' swatches with a grain of salt. 😊
@@morganwu282 Yes! Precisely! I'm not mad at anyone, not even the brand, still watching other creators(as you say, with a grain of salt).
But definitely trust more Amy for the swatches, as we can get a more accurate look at each shade qualities and a more objective opinion about quality. If something ND is not as impressive, she's gonna say it. 😊
Looks like to me in the insta videos they are using either their phone light or an extremely bright light to show off the shadows. Even if they did swatch that way …never seems to show up like that on the eyes. I appreciate you trying these out to show us the real deal .
girl we neeeeed to see this, thank you so much, have a awesome day
You are so welcome☺️
Just the title alone had me chuckling because I know this feeling all too well! 😂 Great vid idea!
Haha my man told me I was being too shady with the title but I was like it’s the truth!! 🤣🤣
@6:10 Pat's personal pallet & swatch looks like a completely different formulation from your pallet & swatch.
I have never seen a video like this! So unique and really puts into perspective how much we can be decieved sometimes. Great upload!❤
I might buy the minca 🤩
I supremely super duper mega appreciate this video
I always get suckered in by the filters and lights
Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to make it for us. 😊
Love this concept!! Thank u for sharing the reality with us ❤❤❤
Thank you for watching 😊
Nice video idea, it was so interesting to watch! I personally prefer built up swatches because I want to see how the eyeshadow looks when I build it up on the eye
Thank you for doing this. I'd watch more of the same because I noticed it too. Swatches may not be everything, but at the end of the day its absolutely marketing and I'm very turned off by over saturated swatches. I have the Muse palette and I find it just so/so to the point I didn't even purchase the other papers from the brand. I'm old AF and love sparkled so to me, its important brands are truthful.
I love this video, please do a comparison using primer in the other arm or so 🙌
Such a cool video, really gives a great idea of what the pallets will look like irl. Adept sparkles are unbeatable ✨
My Glaminatrix palette is on the way, was shipped 4 days ago from Australia) Minka arrived last week) 😂
They have the light hitting them. I can see they have a light directly on the shadows and that can make them look even more vibrant
I mean swatching in and of itself should never be taken as a representation to show how they'll perform on the eyes... I mean were not walking around wearing eye shadow on our arms in foot long strips. 😅 My rule of thumb these days is if I dont love and find almost every shade in a pallet TRULY unique to my collection. Im not buying it. Most days I wear neautrals, and the rest of my pallets are collecting dust. I must have THOUSANDS of dollars worth of eyeshadow sitting there that doesn't get regular use. Probably not even yearly use. Im about to put probably 90% of my collection for sale on my Mercari as it.
I love this, because i looks at those nad I want to buy them, buts mote are $300 in my currency. You just helped me to realize there are shimmers and colors like this in my colection.
I would be interested in swatches of the Pat McGrath single eyeshadows that look insanely sparkly in her ads.
I don’t own any of the singles 😩 but I do have two mothership palettes I could potentially compare
I really appreciate videos like this.
Thanks for your honesty and integrity ❤❤❤
love your original video ideas!
Thank you!!
I like this idea. I am sure the companies behind these palettes will show off their products in the best possible lighting, with top-notch tech and tools to make every single shadow pop and shine. But this reinforces seeing and testing the products in person for yourself.
super helpful series 💃❤️
I really like this video idea!! Such a cool concept
Haven’t had much time for UA-cam lately but I’ve been home sick so I thought I would catch up on your videos! How I’ve missed you! Hope you are doing well❤
I think also big factor is lighting. The lighting in these instagram swatch videos is a lot brighter and more direct
Number one reason I haven't jumped on board with Cosmic Brushes is their swatches. They are so obviously doctored. I'm not sure what they're doing, but it is definitely edited. It looks like they are upping that saturation to the max.
Ha! I love this video, and I'm only minutes in! 👏
It’s because there’s a light on top of the companies’ swatches. I personally love seeing that bc I love seeing the potential the shimmers could have especially when you’re under the sun. The shimmers will look different if you’re indoors unless you’re under a lightbulb.
Such an interesting video concept, I really enjoyed it! 💕
I'm so glad!
I loved this video! Many times I'll follow makeup tutorials, using the same palette, and feel like someone must've switched my palette with something else because the colors look different 🤔 obviously lighting and undertones make a huge difference, but sometimes the difference is just too much 😂
I’ve watched one minute of this video so far and it’s already one of my favorite you’ve ever done 🫶
Aww thank you ☺️
Nice video I like this, continue this girl. Also really good I canceled my winter land palette 😅 but wow adept looks very nice
Amazing when they do swatches & pan is totally clean after. IDK bout yall but no matter how careful I am, I still get bits of shadow around pan edge when I attempt a swatch, regardless of quality. I actually hate swatching my own palettes. I will swatch in a store if anything. I don't wona waste product or dirty up
makeup I buy wit my own $, just for sake of a clip, especially if I'm not getting a kick back for it. So thk u for this vid SO much!
Just put flashlight on during the advert and they will look exactly the same, shimmer/glitter pigments always look beautiful and iridescent in direct lighting, they are obviously not going to glisten the same without.
Great concept. I do wish more swatches were done with a brush
Do you follow makeup just for fun? She does a ton of brush swatches in her reviews.
It’s the camera lights too
It's also intense lighting that makes shimmers look like that
Do they use a sparkling filter? I feel like IRL so many of these big brands don’t deliver.
Ok this was awesome! ❤ tysm for doing this! 😊
Love this video concept!!
What an awesome video! Totally new to this channel, and I subscribed quick after this!
Thank you ☺️
This was fun! Love those nails
Thank you 🤗
Yeah, this looks like Mehron mixing medium or similar was used for some of the Insta swatches. And for the duochromes, there was probably a black or other complimentary base used underneath.
Simply using flash is what makes the sparkly shadows sparkle so good but I’m sure theirs primer down also
Some of it seems like the lighting, as in the sparkles show up more in indirect or lower light. But, I also have been disappointed by brands that have gotten a lot of hype online… including some you’ve pointed out here. Thanks!
