This video and these episodes are really funny, but if you really look into the writing, intentional or not, Mandark’s life is honestly really depressing. For a 60s society that champions peace and love, Mandark’s parents are a disgrace to the hippie name; they have taught and raised Mandark to be the exact opposite, and are completely oblivious to that fact. They obviously know he identifies as male, that he’s born a biological male, that he is passionate about science, and that he has a massive, high-tech lair, in which he is constantly creating and using deadly weapons, exhibiting malicious behaviors, and has concerning thoughts of destruction and even homicide toward Dexter and his lab, but they continue to live in the past and flat-out ignore him. They continue to treat him as a “girl” and name him “Susan” despite him making it clear he doesn’t want that for himself. Perhaps his lust for Dee Dee could be a last resort to escape his parent’s toxic environment, and his rivalry and hatred toward Dexter is fueled by the fact he has everything Mandark doesn’t: parents and siblings that love him, that encourage him to pursue his passion (despite not knowing about his lab). Mandark has none of that. His story is an animated cautionary tale in how bad parenting, gender-based or not, can have a severe impact on children, especially if it places them in or gives them hostile relationships and thoughts
agreed . I think it can also represent how some people who are part of a certain community that is shown as good aren't always good people by any means, seeing how they're obviously forcing a gender onto mandark that he wasn't born as and doesn't identify with. In general, it just seems like such a toxic and sad relationship that I don't think has been expanded upon before (Parents part of groups such as these being terrible parents) Especially in ways that aren't completely obvious to the viewer. @@sjcflawless I think with trans people they just become like that due to biological and environmental factors. Not from coercion. In fact when they flee coercion to act differently from their biological gender, THAT'S transitioning from their gender upbringing.
Family-wise, I feel bad for Mandark. His parents straight up gave him a girl's name and forced him to do things against his will, and he's not even safe from his sister--the only other part of his family we knew about in the golden age of this beloved cartoon. Not to mention, "A Boy Named Sue" botches the continuity since "Dexter's Rival" was supposed to be the episode where Dexter and Mandark first met. Apparently, his real name is also Ivan, though I don't know where that is mentioned. The part where he became evil simply because Dexter laughed at him was way too petty imo, not saying Dexter was right, but he was only reacting to a feminine-looking boy with a girl's name like any little kid would. Also hate that he was made into a doomsday villain who just straight up wants to destroy Dexter, which is another thing about "A Boy Named Sue" that messes with the continuity, because in the first and second seasons, Mandark is still Dexter's enemy, but he does respect Dexter to a certain extent and sees him as a worthy opponent rather than someone he straight up wants to destroy. Plus, he is more affably evil, meaning he was really polite and respecting of others in spite of being a villain. If his back story is true, his behavior in the first and second seasons is more proportionate to the life he's led so far. Also, about Dexter's family, I half-disagree: Dee Dee may love Dexter, but she sure has a funny way of showing it, considering how she destroys his inventions, and while Dexter's parents do encourage him to do what he loves, they also encourage him to do things outside of his comfort zone, though it's only so he can be a well-rounded person. Dexter also appears to be more rational than Mandark, as he's merely somewhat grumpy because of the life he's led so far. You know, because of Dee Dee destroying his inventions all the time. The biggest issue with this episode is how poorly written it is. I bet Genndy Tartakovsky would have been able to give Mandark a better backstory (without botching the continuity), since Genndy didn't create the third and fourth seasons and had no involvement with them aside from being an executive producer (over his OWN WORK) and working on a couple of segments. A MERE COUPLE. Since Mandark originally had no backstory (and the memorable one-shot Lalavava was the only member of his family we knew about), it was likely that Genndy wanted him to be a more mysterious character. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS SHOW ARE SO DEEP 😭
You do realize female to male trans people exist right...? I don't think the point of this video is to make it seem like Mandark being forced to be girly and act girly as a good thing, but this is exactly what most trans boys face in their childhood, being forced to be girly. While I'll acknowledge that it probably wasn't the show writers intention to make Mandark a trans boy it still potrays what they go through which I understand how trans people could identify with.
Yeah even if Dexter laughed at him, Mandark had the most petty revenge. I can say the same for the janitor in the _Die Hard_ parody episode. At first you sympathize with him but...boy your mind will change so fast your head will spin.

I really love this episode which shows mandarks backstory . It gave more depth to tha character and show that he is not only a nerdy competitive child . You kinda understand why and how sad, angry and resentful he is .. And I quite feel sorry for him . I mean his parents neglected him and impose to him what and how he should be ( which is so hypocritical … hippies don’t wanna follow “society rules” but obligate their own son to follow their standards and deny mandarks needs ) Mandark maybe is not a villain , is just a child who was frequently neglected and feel so lonely . And create the “evil genius “ personality to make people respect him more , including dexter who didn’t take him seriously at first and to try forget this whole awful situation with his family ( I’m not considering the ego Trip story in this analysis .)
The issue with this backstory is that it butchers the continuity, if you ask me, like the part where Dexter and Mandark meet (when they first met in school), how they became enemies (which was because they were trying to be superior over each other) and how Mandark wants to destroy Dexter for good (whereas in the first two seasons he actually respects Dexter to some extent despite hating him, seeing him as a worthy opponent rather than being his arch-nemesis).
I think the Ego Trip storyline kind of gives Mandark a darkly poetic end if you take this episode into account. He was born in water, and where do we first see all three future Mandarks? Immersed in water, whether by their own choice or condemned to it like Braindark. The fact that Mandark keeps going back to water the more rich and powerful he gets makes me wonder if he just feels more comfortable in the water, or if it's his way of reinventing himself once his parents are gone- like it's his "rebirth". Is it any coincidence that the pet he chose to bestow superpowers on was, of all things, a duck?
I'd be pissed too if I had hippie parents calling me Susan, or even if I had a father that named me Sue in an attempt to toughen me up from all the bullying, like the Johnny Cash song.
Mandark has a very tragic story, his parents are hippies obsessed with love and peace and they decided to give their son a female name and female clothes against his will, even though he is a boy, Mandark has terrible parents, because they named him "Susan", many boys and girls must hate their parents for giving them embarrassing and humiliating names that go against their real gender, for example: a girl named Charlie and a boy named Lucy. Mandark hated being treated like a girl by his parents, he wanted to use his talent in science and when he met Dexter for the first time, it seemed that the two genius children would be good friends, but everything changed when Dexter thought that Mandark was a girl for his girly clothes and Dexter laughed at Mandark's real name which was Susan. From there Mandark would hold a deep grudge against Dexter for humiliating him in that way and from there Dexter and Mandark would become eternal enemies.
@@untitled2006 The name Charlie has always been used as a masculine name and many men call themselves Charlie, but as time passed, many girls began to use the name Charlie as a short name for Charlotte, just like Charlie is short for Charles.
Honestly the Dexter part was so ridiculous. While there was glimmer of truth to Mandark's words, there was glimmer of truth to Dexter's words too: -He probably wasn't as trusting of Mandark due to thinking he was a girl, since we all know how much bad luck Dexter has had with Dee Dee, and because she's a girl, he's probably not too trusting of girls in general. -Dexter laughing at Mandark's real name was a reaction any young child would have. Not saying he's right, but since Dexter is much younger than his stated age in the show (and it's likely that he doesn't know any better), he's only reacting like any little kid would react. I mean, he encountered a boy with a feminine name and appearance, any normal little kid would have laughed! Mandark becoming straight-up evil over that was _extremely_ petty with a capital P. -And for the love of God, CHRIS SAVINO BUTCHERED THE CONTINUITY. Given how Genndy wanted the show to end after the _Ego Trip_ movie, the origin of Dexter and Mandark meeting and becoming enemies was in school and it was due to the fact that the two wanted to be superior over each other. It's why I practically don't count these seasons as canon. And apparently, Mandark's actual name is Ivan, but I'm not sure where this is said.
He wasnt being mysoginistic, he was acting exactly how somebody would act towards Mandark being a biological male with a conflicting female name & clothing and hair.
Those parents are truely terrible. I get wanting name your child something, but even if your child is born male at least pick a male name, if they wish to change it later that’s fine, but it’s just asking for childhood trauma to deliberately name a child an inappropriate name.
Misleading title aside, This definitely does resonate with the experiences of a lot of trans people - particularly in the early stage of their transition. Being trans myself, I definitely went through those early stages where even though I'd come out as trans I was deadnamed a lot, now about 10 years later, It rarely happens anymore. But being deadnamed so regularly, and having certain gender roles forced on you (Like what Deedee did to Mandark) can be incredibly frustrating and humiliating. Sure, the whole, "His name is Susan," thing is primarily for laughs, but it still hit home for me.
mandark is a boy not a trans, if you see is biography is very explicit that they only called him Susan just to be rebelious on society. That in fact is very sad since they imposed on him they political and philosophical view of the world.

I guess I never thought of how mature the writing was for this show. This is honestly a good, subtle way to get audiences (trans, cis, non-binary, etc.) to put themselves into someone else's shoes for a few minutes to understand what it's like. Do I personally think that Mandark was written as a trans character? No, but I do think showing people that "hey, this is what it feels like every day to be treated like this" was a good way to get kids to maybe think a little more empathetically. It reminds me of a short film on UA-cam about "what if being gay was the 'norm' and being straight was not." It got people to think about what it feels like to live a different situation. It's hard for others to think about someone else's experience, and this was a good way to show them what that experience would look like if it was them. So many great cartoons from the 90s that taught us well.
I remember that gay/straight norm reverse, too. Sadly it didn't reach to homophobes obviously because they can't be deterred from stupidity. Mandark's parents are awful for imposing "challenging gender norms" on a child that never wanted to be trans. So ironically I see it more as the far left telling their tom boy girl "youre a boy in a girl's body :)" despite the girl just liking boy stuff and being okay with their gender but being prescribed hormone blockers by the self righteous parents anyways. Don't force your kid to be trans and accept them if they do end up being trans (personally I believe transitional medication should only be an option after age 18)
Mandark was the complete opposite to what "trans" nonsense pushes. He was an actual, biological boy who insisted in being treated like one, while his far-left parents kept psychotically pushing female labels/traits onto him. He's an example of pushing against leftest mental illness.
Hard pill to swallow: Mandark is not trans. He is and always has been a boy and identifies as such. It’s his parents who try to force a different gender identity on him. His turn to evil is partially out of frustration and partially as a bid to assert his own identity. This is how damaging forcing gender politics on someone can be. Let them figure it out for themselves. Whether they’re cis or trans, it’s not something anyone else gets to decide.
Facts your child will come to terms with however they identify themselves as they grow older. The parents job is to support that decision not force it one was or the other.
@@jeremytung1632 Thats the whole problem. His parents were so pretentious and self absorbed, they never bothered to consider how Mandark felt about it even after he voiced his frustration. Raising a whole human isn’t some virtue signaling contest just to dEfY gEnDeR CoNvEnTiOnS.
So you agree that forcing a child to identify as a certain gender is damaging? A lot of trans people identify with mandark’s experience because it can go both ways lmao
Why did you say "mandark is not trans" and then list a ton of characteristics of mandark that make him sound trans Like, do you genuinely think it's in any way a widespread problem that people are being forced to be trans by their parents? Or even a thing that has ever happened? On the other hand, trans people getting deadnamed and such constantly is absolutely a widespread problem.
I like how this show was made in the 90s, in a time where trans characters were almost never featured beyond occasional comedic relief, but the makers here have treated Mandark's story surprisingly seriously. Even though it's a kids' comedy show, they're not making fun of those situations. They show Mandark as a kid with shitty parents who got abandoned by them support-wise and keep humiliating him on a daily basis. Someone who's turned evil due to frustration of being constantly misunderstood, ridiculed and humiliated. You don't think he's being silly, you genuinely feel sorry for him in those scenes. The show doesn't treat his transness as a comedy gimmick, it's a natural part of his character. Even more astonishing if you think that they managed to achieve it almost 30 year ago, what a lot of huge production companies *cough cough* Disney *cough cough* can't achieve even today.
These episodes were made in the early 2000's though. As far as the 90's seasons are concerned Mandark was just this evil rival. Even in these situations back then, we were supposed to still be laughing at him because he's evil and this is his karma for being evil. Now though... Yeah, poor guy, no wonder he acts the way he does. It's especially jarring considering the primary writer/director went on to create The Loud House.

I loved watching Dexter's Lab growing up, but seasons 3 and 4 were very badly written. Seasons 3 and 4 need Tartakovsky treatment-related reboots.
I feel that if Genndy jumped on board for more Dexter all of Mandark's backstory would be tossed out the window.
Man now that I'm older, this is definitely unfair and his charecter makes sense. You broke it down perfectly.
How is this good for Mandark in anyway his parents purposely made him girly against his will, and continue to even tho he clearly wants to be a man.

I really love this episode which shows mandarks backstory . It gave more depth to tha character and show that he is not only a nerdy competitive child .
You kinda understand why and how sad, angry and resentful he is .. And I quite feel sorry for him . I mean his parents neglected him and impose to him what and how he should be ( which is so hypocritical … hippies don’t wanna follow “society rules” but obligate their own son to follow their standards and deny mandarks needs )
Mandark maybe is not a villain , is just a child who was frequently neglected and feel so lonely .
I thought Charlie was a neutral name? I know a Charlie, short for Charlotte. Otherwise yes, your comment is spot on.
@@untitled2006 The name Charlie has always been used as a masculine name and many men call themselves Charlie, but as time passed, many girls began to use the name Charlie as a short name for Charlotte, just like Charlie is short for Charles.
I think Mandark is biological female who identifies as a transmale
Honestly the Dexter part was so ridiculous. While there was glimmer of truth to Mandark's words, there was glimmer of truth to Dexter's words too:
-He probably wasn't as trusting of Mandark due to thinking he was a girl, since we all know how much bad luck Dexter has had with Dee Dee, and because she's a girl, he's probably not too trusting of girls in general.

Now I know why Mandark ripped off Dexter's memory headset when Dexter's dad told him about moving up to 'big boys underwear'.
He's an example of pushing against leftest mental illness.

mandark being the most pissed off baby is the best mood ever.
Hard pill to swallow:
Mandark is not trans.
It was more like they named him Susan to defy gender conventions.
Why did you say "mandark is not trans" and then list a ton of characteristics of mandark that make him sound trans
Like, do you genuinely think it's in any way a widespread problem that people are being forced to be trans by their parents? Or even a thing that has ever happened? On the other hand, trans people getting deadnamed and such constantly is absolutely a widespread problem.
I don’t care what the people says. for me that guy’s name was is and always going to be Mandark.
Even more astonishing if you think that they managed to achieve it almost 30 year ago, what a lot of huge production companies *cough cough* Disney *cough cough* can't achieve even today.
hes not trans though, hes born a boy and identifies as a boy
These episodes were made in the early 2000's though. As far as the 90's seasons are concerned Mandark was just this evil rival.

0:58 Mandark: Mandark!
That last "Susan" by his mom sounded very passive aggressive.
I love this recontextualization! Although it felt bad hearing Mandark getting deadnamed for like two minutes.
MANdark don't take that shit from his parents, he a a real man
The absolute misery in his face at 2:22 😢 Being misgendered really do feel like that
His mom is very cute
Windbear: I name her Susan
Me: His name was Mandark
I feel this episode was more making fun of the hippie parents. The writers even slipped in a joke on how the parents were neglecting him. They thought about it for 5 seconds, and once again ignored his needs.
Lmfaoooo!! Mandark’s backstory is the exact opposite of Connie from King Of The Hill.
I like how mandark was just being nice to dexter and he just laughs at him because he said his name was Susan, no wonder mandark hates dexter, dexter may not be an evil scientist but he sure is an asshole.
Poor Mandark. So that's why he became evil.
I apologize Mandark I understand now.
Okay listen when Dexter said what's your name I said Susan and then the other character says Susan
Everytime mandark spoke I thought he was going to say "hey do you know what train this is?"
He sounds like the Know It All kid from The Polar Express
Same voice actor
He is lol
also Larry from Lloyd in space
YESSS DOSENT HE
The audience loves how Mandark likes being called his new name and has to constantly correct anyone who calls him by his birth name, Susan.
Looking back, this hurts to watch. Poor Mandark even gets belittled and misnamed by his crush, Deedee.😒
If only Dexter had never laughed at him, all that stuff that will happen after could've been avoided.
W-was Mandark ahead of his time?
I think I said twice in this video but Dexter predicted how some people are like in the present 💀
1:54 Mandark without his glasses is seriously cursed. 😅
For real 😂
@@VundabarGAWKfan hey there Procrastination! :)
@@member-berry-bonbons1124 What’s up. Did you watch any Dexter’s lab today?
@@VundabarGAWKfan not much but I did see that same clip I uploaded where Dexter eats the burrito and gets a belly ache
Now, in 2023, about half of parents are like that.
THE EVIL COSTUME!!!!!!!!!! LOLL
I’m so happy that I was able to find this video less than ten minutes after thinking I came up with the transmasc Mandark headcanon-
If this episode was made today, Dexter's Lab would be cancelled for transphobia.
To be fair, they had Mandark crossdressing as Dexter's mom in a later episode. Pro-trans folks aren't too bright, so they could likely point to it and skate by.
gotta love how the only one who actually respects mandark's preferred name and pronouns is also his worst enemy
0:28 dexters based
Man-dark. Dark man. Evil man.
He is more relatable to me than ever.
As I have changed my name to Viles.
