One of the greatest bass players in music history. His trailblazing style and high energy performances defined the jazz, rock funk that came out of America's urban centers during the 70s and 80s.
Along with the rest of the band, he held down the iconic groove of their music, as it shifted from soul during the early years to disco, and on to soul, jazz, rock fusion, without missing so much as a beat.
EWF served as the template followed by many groups during that same period, but equaled by none...because they didn't have Verdine White!

Earth, Wind and Fire is a phenomenal band. Loved them since Kalimba. My concern was their dabbling in mysticism & astrology. God is clear in the Bible not to open up doors to the occult or go after idols. Help them see the light! Stick with the word and Jesus. Always .

Back in the 70s I was a teen working at a Days Inn Motel/lodge. One day a group of blacks came in and checked into a couple of our lodges. I was the restaurant/gift shop cashier at the time. My cashier's station faced the front door and check in desk. After these people checked in, a little while later one of them came and bought a deli sandwich and chips. As I rang up his stuff, I felt he looked familiar but wasn't sure from where. So I noticed he has on an Earth, Wind and Fire t shirt that was the album cover of one of their albums as they were shown to be standing in a triangle. The guy in front of me, as I looked at his shirt, turned out to be one in the same! It was Maurice White! Earth, Wind and Fire had checked into our Days Inn to stay there a few days. I asked him what they were doing there and he told me that they has some "down time" and wanted to rest. I never asked him for his autograph. Now since his passing I wish I would have. I think I also saw Verdine at the check in desk and also Phillip Bailey. none of the others ever came and bought a meal or anything, so I never got to interact with them. But the backup singers the Emotions were also there and one would come down each evening and buy a deli sandwich, chips and a drink and would stand there and talk with me a few minutes. There were all very nice people. I told the Emotion singer that I was a drummer and that I loved Earth, Wind and Fire's songs. That was a rare encounter with some rock stars that proved that they are all just people too and we all are pretty much the same human beings as God made us to be. I'll never forget that time in my life when I met Maurice and the Emotion singer girl.

I was at a stoplight in LA and I was daydreaming. The light has changed and I’m alerted by a car horn! I looked up to see Verdine White in a white jag behind me! I recognized him and waved. He waved back and smiled! About a year and a half later, I am in LA and stopped at a light and again alerted by a car horn and it’s Verdine again! I wanted to get out and tell him we did this a year and a half ago!

Verdine is truly an amazing musician and his stage presence was a very big part in the their live performances. Never have there been a bassist on the stage doing jumping jacks and leaping all over the stage like this man. He was such a joy to watch live, and his playing skills was way up there with the best of them. He was one of several bassist to inspire me to pursue the bass; Jameson and Jermaine was my biggest inspirations as a kid though.

Earth, Wind & Fire performed live in an enormous dome in Johannesburg, South Africa about ten years ago and I was given a ticket to see the concert by a good friend. The show had been sponsored by South Africa's Lottery and hardly received any publicity at all. I wouldn't have even heard about it, never mind attended it, had my friend not bought me that ticket. She happens to be a genius and knew about my obsession with the band and especially with Verdine White and his magical bass playing and songwriting. Just to set the scene a little, let me explain that I saw Rammstein perform at the same venue a year earlier and there were about 40,000 people at that gig. I was literally squished up against the back wall at the farthest end of the Dome away from the stage, but I could still feel the heat from their pyrotechnic show even though they themselves were like ants on that stage. The Lotto-sponsored Earth, Wind and Fire gig, especially given the South African racial demographics, should have had at least that many people in attendance. Instead, myself and my friend were two of maybe two-hundred people experiencing the spiritual ecstasy only Earth, Wind and Fire has ever been able to create in a live environment. It was an enormous blessing, but shame on you, Lotto. Our National Lottery really let those guys down.
They played and sung incredibly, and Verdine, though probably in his 70s at the time, played in his sparkling white jumpsuit with all the energy of a 16-year-old on meth. God rest your soul, Verdine. Thank God for Earth, Wind and Fire, and damn the South African Lottery for letting them down the way they did. They had to have been a bit bummed, although show it they did not! They performed as if there were two million of us in that audience. I am eternally grateful. Thank you so much, Angela, for the ticket. I love you and miss you.

I was a budding recording engineer in the mid 80s in LA, and at 21 found myself recording demos for an all girl band (Strictly Business, never went anywhere), produced by Verdine White. I worked on a few other projects with him, including some work with Tony LeMans (later signed by Prince). I spent quite a bit of time with Verdine, and he invited me to his house for Thanksgiving. Verdine is a very kind and generous person, and a rare kind of deep, "human" person. And very funny as well. One day he said to me (a white guy): "Hey, Pete, how come your last name is "Blackman" and my last name is "White"? I said: "I don't know." Also, totally straight no drug guy when I worked with him.

These were your reincarnated Egyptian brothers of the Earth Wind and Fire Gods. They were born magicians turned musicians performing real time alchemy, and legends of transitional time. Their female counterparts were a group known as "The Emotions" "Boogie Wonderland" was a song inspired by a hidden colony in the Egyptian dynasty where the Gods would go to listen to music. The historical events run deep in the blood of many musicians. Like the Eagles bloodline belonging to the masterful musician Celtics and Viking Gods. These are offspring of Gods.
