  • I asked my Strava community for the best cheap running shoes, looking for some help in putting this video together. We had loads of comments (thank you!) so I decided to get these three most frequently suggested shoes all in and test to see if they were actually any good. Thank you to everyone who commented!

My favorite part of these reviews is how you always manage to find some dreadful puddle to go and have an absolute STOMP through. It is genuinely hilarious and satisfying.

I love the fact you concentrate on how comfortable the trainers are and their intended use for running. Great to see other brands get mentioned in the video, seems many are tied to Adidas and Nike. However, I'm a massive Hoka and Asics user purely for comfort/walking long distances.

Really happy to see this sort of video, highlighting really good, more affordable trainers. So many shoe/run-tubers pushing more and more expensive trainers it's so refreshing to see someone cover three solid pairs of trainers that are all comfortably under £100. Nice work.

I've ran about 300k in the Puma VN2 and it is great shoe. Although I must agree with you Ben, the stability can be an issue. My right heel twists to the outside during my runs, despite that I run on my forefoot and do not pronate. It feels almost like the heel isnt connected to the rest of the shoe.
Overall comfort is very good, and the grip is supreme!

  • @kaprikornian1

I like the Puma VN2 a lot, it's an amazing value for money ( I have 2 pairs :D). And I confirm that the only downside is that is quite hot in warm weather. Being in Portugal, during summertime you can't run in these.

I'm a massive fan of both iterations of the Puma Velocity Nitro and got both for around the £50 mark. In the recent atrocious weather my beaten up version 1s have been my go to shoe (well over 600 miles and still going strong). Never had any issues with stability or over heating. Have used both for the occasional session - especially those on wet grass or wet roads and I didn't want to take out something with inferior grip. Would recommend to anybody (except those requiring Stability options).

The Reebok Floatride 5 is a fantastic shoe. It's just a really good workhorse of a shoe that can easily do 800k. I tried the Velocity, but that just doesn't work for my feet. I do my long runs (unpaved) on these and they are just amazing.

I ran about 100 miles in Velocity 2 and its still a little too stiff for my liking but its built like a tank. I am considering to buy another pair just to have it. Outsole barely has any sign of wear. For 60-70$ its really good shoe. It does not feel like 10mm drop, more like 6-8mm

  • @martinweston8147
    @martinweston8147 7 місяців тому

Hoka ATR6 @£65 these are great from treadmill to trail, my first pair are still going strong with over 700miles on them, I've done everything from a fast 5k treadmill to a 50k trail run, plus they are also my go to driving shoe. If its serious bogs and mud, they are out of there depth, but looking at your reviews I don't think many subscribers venture too far from the tarmac and trails. Great content Ben!

  • @donalmctavish2127

I own the Puma VN2s and Nike Pegasus 40. Dont the Reebok Floatride 5 but have the 4. The 4s are okay for shorter distances but could do with more midsole.
The Pegs are hit and miss, sometimes feeling like massive clown shoes. Can also feel the air uints. Their saving grace is that they dont seem to get wet in the rain.
Best by far is the VN2s but could do with more stability after about half marathon distance.

I agree with everything about the Puma’s! I bought them bc they were on sale and didn’t put much effort into the purchase but they turned out to be a hit. The only minuses for me: they are slightly too narrow, and the bottoms tend to pick up a lot of soggy debree like crushed leaves, etc.

I took a punt on the Pumas a few months back. I was really disappointed with it in terms of feel. It feels sluggish, bulky and in the orange far too hot even in winter. Super comfy and fine for recovery runs but I never find myself reaching for it. For the money however, it's well worth it.

For any Asics fans out there, the Evoride Speed is extremely good value for the money. It has enough cushion for longer runs but is also light enough with some pop to do your faster runs in them. I would argue anything from 5k to the marathon.

I really like the Adidas SL20.2s. You can get them for under £60 and they're pretty lightweight and breathable for the price. I really get on with the firmness of the lightstrike foam, but some people might find it too harsh. Fantastic grip and durability too, I've run 900k in my current pair and they feel just the same. Just make sure to get them 1/2 or 1 size up. Haven't tried the SL20.3s yet, but they're even cheaper (almost off-puttingly cheap for the current model)

And what about a shoe that is just comfortable? I’ve ran 500kms with the ASICS Nimbus 25 and I found them too “hard” for easy runs. I have the Novablast 3, also very recommend, but today, after 19kms, I had a bit of knee pain and the front of my feet. I don’t remember ever had it.
What do you recommend that’s just comfortable, don’t care for something that’s also faster?

I've just ran in them - wow - ran further without noticing - loved them, They felt like I'm floating a little. I have watched your other videos and I've took a shine to the vaporflys. My running experience is boxing and karate training in the 70s with trails for the British Karate team for 82 Olympics (I was a bad boy). Did the first 1983 and then 84 Derby Ramathons (full), then 20 years of successful international powerlifting. Threw in some 10k's around 2010 and still powerlift with now an over 60s world deadlift record. My previous experience with running shoes was the Spondon specialists in Derby, but these modern shoes are way better. My son's have taken an interest too as they also run and lift. Thanks mate, you've got a fan - gonna swing by your site and look back through your UA-cam vids.

The Velocity Nitro 2 unfortunately did not work for me. I believe that it has a major flaw in the design of the shoes, which hopefully will be fixed with the Velocity 3 : the dual middlesole compound was very tim in the end of the arches (closer to the toes) where the bigger stack of middlesole on that area was the.Nitro foam ( super soft ) ,while the EvA was extremely tim and ended twisting over time. Totally deformed the middlesole to amke the shoes unusable after ~90 km ran for me. These shoes are very fragile, and you got to run with them on a perfect road, and still, you can't overpronate, or you will end up breaking the shoes o .that weak spot.
This Puma reminded me about the fragile spot back in the days in the iPhone 6 line where they had a weak spot by the volume button where we could accidentally bend the phone...

@Jon-hb6gx and the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 in the blue/ details in purple was super cool looking. Too bad it did not work for me
But zi have faith that the Velocity Nitro 3 will work well , for me, since it will have a bit higher stack of one single piece of Nitro foam
This time around, it will not bend or twist ...
