I am 73 years (young) and, just a few days ago, I cried, yet again when I saw the scar on my leg when, having been hit so strongly by my mother, when I was 5/6 just because I had been laughing too loudly while she was having a nap and woke her up. Her anger and my screams of pain are still so clear in my head..... I was bullied at school, I was the youngest of four and my elder sisters always told me I was nuisance. I have hated myself so much!! When I married, my husband left me with two children but, I brought them up alone, with a scoliosis (twisted spine) and was told ten years ago I would soon need a wheelchair...I still walk, go to yoga, live on my own, and Parise God.
So good to hear I can praise myself and see that I am not sooo bad after all. Thank you.

When I was a child my mother always took her anger & frustration out on my sister & I.
My sister married young to get away from the cruelty. I was 6 years younger than her. After she left, all the anger was directed towards me. My 4 brothers could do no wrong in my mothers eyes! I remember her telling me things that really hurt my feelings & made me feel so unloved! Once I didn’t want to go out in the ☔️ without an umbrella. My mother said “Don’t worry, you’re not sugar! You won’t melt!” I felt so hurt & wanted to cry! If that had been one of my siblings she would never have said that to them! That doesn’t sound that major, but in the context of all the hits, slaps, kicks, & punches she gave me on a regular basis, the verbal abuse almost pushed me to suicide on more than one occasion. I couldn’t imagine ever saying or doing those things to one of my own children! I raised 5, one with special needs. They are amazing & I love them all!💝
You tell the child that you may dislike their behavior when they disobey you, but you always let the child know that they are loved regardless of their mistakes! We are all human & all make mistakes. It doesn’t mean we aren’t worthy of love & forgiveness! My mother is elderly & I am a grandmother now myself. I have learned that my mother was treated badly by my grandmother & my mother was repeating the cycle of abuse she had endured. I had to make a conscious effort to avoid doing the same thing to my children. For that I am proud of myself, & although I know that I am not perfect, I am a pretty awesome mother!😊 At least that’s what my kids tell me!☺️

@@robbymitchell805 Thank you Robby! So kind of you to say!
It was really difficult at times, because I kept hearing my mother’s voice in my head when they were little. But I sought counseling alone, their father doesn’t believe in therapy. 🙄That was probably a big part of the problem. He came from a very dysfunctional family as well. You have to acknowledge the problem in order to fix the problem. He was not willing to see or admit that. He thought that since his parents were still married, not divorced, like mine. That they were perfectly ok. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s hard when only 1 person is trying to make the “good parenting” decisions.
I tried medication at times, as well. Sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn’t. Most anti-depression drugs have side effects. Weight gain, etc. That was not helping the situation either. I finally found Bupropion, also known as Zyban. It is known to help smokers quit smoking. It is a more neutral. It helps with cravings, etc. I found that the “Slow Release” works on keeping you on a more even keel, instead of a big jolt & then it would be virtually gone the rest of the day. In any case we separated after almost 20 years of marriage & then we tried reconciliation for 3 & a half years, but to no avail. You can’t keep a marriage going if only 1person is trying to make it work. We stayed married on paper for 10 more years, until he met someone online. Now that he is remarried & has a child with her. He’s seeing things a little more clearly. His wife rules the roost now. She is 17 yrs younger than us! We have 11 grandchildren, older than his new child. He is definitely a more submissive father & husband this time around. I have no issues with his new wife. She’s not the reason we got divorced. She also encourages him to visit our daughter with special needs now. He really wasn’t seeing her much in those 10 yrs after the reconciliation failed, unless I took her to him. He’d see her for 5-10 minutes only in the car. Our daughter lives in a residential home now, due to the fact the I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in October. That’s another story though.😊 Anyway, whatever it takes for him to go & see her. I’m happy he does. Beebo (her nickname!☺️) has taught us a lot of things. She has made us better people! We are constantly learning about ourselves & what’s really important in life. Her siblings are better people for having had a baby sister like her. They learned to not take their physical or mental gifts for granted. It can literally be taken away in a blink of an eye.
Well, thanks again for your kind words! I greatly appreciate them!😊 Take care!🌸

I stumbled across this and as a mother of six adult children the oldest is 31 which I had at the age of 15 and the youngest almost 20, I grew up with a lot of childhood neglect, abuse and trauma of being a homeless child from age of 13 until 18. I was in foster homes. I managed to avoid becoming addictive to any substances and considering my childhood and young adult life I’ve managed to be a pretty put together person. I care for ppl,I’m not angry or bitter and I feel to much empathy which sometimes get me taken advantage of.when I came to the end of this video I was in deep tears.

You’re not alone. As a baby, I was not nurtured or given attention. It lasted 18 years. There was abuse and frequent rages but the worst for me as a child was I couldn’t get my mom to like me. She grieved for her actions in old age. Turns out it was generational abuse, she was 1 of 2 girls treated this way while the other siblings were shown positive attention, as it was in my family.

Fantastic video. I love Marissa Peer, been following for a few years and I’m ready to do some of her training now too.
It occurs to me that some people commenting here missed the part of the video about our imperfections making us perfect - they make us who we are and we’re meant to be. We are perfect with our flaws and imperfections. We’re not all meant to be able to do everything perfectly. We are all part of a bigger whole with our part to play. So we don’t need to be perfect at all things - that’s futile and a wasted life. But we can strive to be good, loving people, and work hard at the things that matter to us and the things we choose to do with our lives, honing our craft and personality and let others work on honing theirs, and cheer them on as they do.
So let’s not jump on and highlight the “imperfections” of other people who are being brave enough to do as this video encourages - praising themselves (and to do it publicly is very brave), to help build their self-esteem. Let’s praise them for doing that, agree with them and perhaps even follow their lead. Those who choose to only point out the mistakes of others are not brave or more intelligent; they are behaving like the parent who points out the child’s mistakes and flaws, eroding their self confidence and knocking them down instead of cheering them on. Cheering people on and acknowledging them, in turn encourages them to continue to do and be better - that’s a far more powerful approach and doesn’t cause any negativity or undermine anyone. I love these videos and the way that most people are supporting each other in the comments. There’s by far more love here in this comment string and lots of love from me too.

oh my goodness, I have reached the age of 70 without much self esteem. I was married to a man who did nothing but use and abuse me. My parents didn't believe in telling us kids that we were great or loved or that they were proud of us - it has affected my whole life and I have never had much self esteem or confidence in myself. But I do know I'm strong and brave and will not be messed around anymore. I am just going through a break up with a partner of 16 years and this video will change how I look at myself and love myself. Thank you so much I am so glad to have stumbled across it.

You are so right we should love ourself. We actually will be much happier to. Most of the time I do tell myself I look good but their is times when I say I am so ugly then I snap out of it and say that is not right to say to myself. Im 59 and as Ive gotten older I don't feel as pretty but I keep telling myself I need to start going to the gym so I can help my body to look better and feel better. So that is my goal after I move all my things to my new home I will start exercising to feel better and not have negative thoughts. I hate to say but negative thoughts come from the evil one- the Devil. Our Creator... the Creator of humans wants us to love ourselves because He is love. Therefore, we should always try to stay positive and love ourself just like you have said in your video to...

So glad I found this video. I need this today. Words of my mother from 50 yrs ago still cripple me at times. Words from my xhusband after decades hurt me but not as bad as things my selfish narcissistic mother use to say. Now I feel sorry for her. I’ve worked all my life while she never did. I’ve risen out of poverty and hell but she didn’t. She was just good at whining to get things from people and then us when we became adult. She made it clear I was never her favorite. I was very careful to not let my kids experience that ever.
I am loved. I am beautiful. I am a miracle. Look at the sun and stars. They shine for me. I am intelligent. I am organized. I am smart. I am focused. I am talented.

You know, this is just what I was looking for at this very moment. And yesterday, the day before, the day before that, etc.
Of all the many tumultuous mountains I've climbed it all comes down to this. Core beliefs, survival mode, and the need for being acknowledged, accepted. Or, more accurately, the need for connection. Being in close proximity to my immediate family is not healthy for me (I'm not married or a parent, btw) But the proximity issue is a recent necessity. In many ways a consequence as well as I wouldn't be here if I hadn't done this or that. So it is what it is and now I must validate myself more than ever and disallow negativity to affect my life. Thank you for this video, I believe it will aide many of us in our quest to feel better, to be better and actually learn to enjoy our individual lives :)
