Great singing! The Rhinemaidens are superbe. I thought Wotan lost his left eye, representing introspection and intuition, when he drank from the stream of knowledge beneath the World Ash. No matter, really.
Wotan had to pay with his left eye to get knowledge by drinking at source at Yggdrasil. But he got the two ravens Hugin and Mugin (German: Vernunft und Verstand) which report every evening what's happened at world that day. At Twilight of Gods Brunnhilde sings at finale "Fliegt heim, ihr Raben" ('flying home ravens') to report Wotan about his downfall caused by her. At Ring there are lot of notes to orignal story Edda.
I've seen thr Chinese production since my previous post and it's really amazing and much more in line with the libretto than this one; with the Lepage production it's probably the best I've seen to this day; what a pity Walkyrie and Siegfried are not uploaded.
I saw this same production in May, 2017, but with a different cast and conductor. While the singing was excellent in all 4 operas, the productions were boring, minimalist--quite dismal overall. The Ring requires special effects and innovative staging to do justice to the complexity of Wagner's story tellings. Little is evident in this Vienna cycle which looks cheap, as though it cost 100 Euros in total. Anyway, thanks Logan for this visual souvenir of my first Ring cycle.
After a hundred and thirty-five years (Call me grandpa!) of trying to watch one laughable interpretation after another, I have independently arrived at your conclusion. I have eine Liebe zur Tradition, but this is, I believe, the minority report.
Too cheap for the Vienna State Opera. Has their budget been so severely slashed they can no longer put something decent on stage? The orchestra didn´t seem to be very involved either.
Yet another cold, sterlie, laughable stage production of Wagner. I'm pretty sure I'd get better symbiosis of music and action if I were to listen to the CD while watching the Flintstones with the sound down.
@@davidbastardo4154 I've just had a look at Castorff's Bayreuth production. OH MY GOD!!! It's hard to believe that not only do people pay a lot of money to attend such garbage, they a actually sit through it without laughing. It makes this 'Rheingold' production look sensible .
@@BrainiacFingers Indeed. Being a Wagnerian nowadays is very challenging, unless you are a tasteless snob with self-hatred. Kosky's production of Meistersinger is even worse. It puts Wagner himself as Hans Sachs in the Nürnberg trials, after killing Beckmesser in a pogrom. Because apparently Beckmesser is Jewish for some reason.
@@davidbastardo4154 Now I've just gone and looked at some of Kosky's Meistersinger. I don't think I can watch any more of this stuff. If you have any compassion, you'll refrain from telling me about any more of these monumental atrocities against good taste.
@@davidbastardo4154Well, after Wagner had published an utterly antisemitic essay in 1850 (which was 18 years prior to the first performance of Meistersinger) people understood, that he was an antisemitic a...hole. Something that somehow had escaped their attention, when Wagner had insulted the famous componist Meyerbeer (who had tried to help him in his early years in Paris, but in Wagners not very humble opinion, not enough). And Meyerbeer happened to be jewish, too. The character of Beckmesser shows a certain resemblance to a well known music critic (Eduard Hanslick), that dared not to be a fan of Wagner and who was not a jew, but of jewish descent jewish. So of course this is an interesting aspect, that a director can refer to, especially when the opera plays in the city, where the nazi-administration under leadership of the huge Wagner fan Hitler enacted antisemitic laws (Nürnberger Gesetze) that lead to the death of several million people. And later the Nürnberg trials... In my opinion, this was all very clear and easy to understand. But then, I'm from Germany. Maybe you are from a country where there never was such thing as antisemitism or racism or any such things?
It's a hideous production like the Metropolitan Opera's crap. I just don't understand why great conductors and singers put up with this bullscheisse. They should take a stand against this desecration of the great operatic masterpieces.
Very cheesy production. It would be better to do an un-staged concert version than this embarrassment. Wotan is simply not up to the task, as well as some of the other singers. Sad that this is what one of the finest opera houses in the world thinks of Wagner.
For most of this insipid production you're staring at a blank stage. How can an audience applaud this mindless dreck? (I suppose if you pay upwards of $100 or more for your seat, you'd feel like an idiot if you didn't convince yourself to like it.) Have any of these demented stage designers ever read the full detailed stage picture with which Wagner begins each act??
check out the China National Opera's production, the singing isn't too bad, the orchestra is ok, they have brass intonation problems with the staging is incredible.
You wunderkinds or whatever, why are you ruining Wagner (and other classic operas, for that matter) like this? I just want to see Wagner as Wagner envisioned. If you have an agenda, write you own and do whatever you want. I have no interest in *your* Wagner.
Such glorious music to be presented in such a tawdry production.
Mostly European Regietheater - original and innovative or just a cheap cover for budget cutting?

Wien is famous for great conduction and bad direction… since 80’s
Wotan’s blind eye is the left one … wroten everywhere: here is the right one … 😮
Sound like heaven and stage as an high school production.
But the orchestra is the Wiener sound 🥰🥰🥰
Excel·lent treball dels cantants, músics i director. Gran Adam Fischer!

I’ve actually really grown to like the Lepage production honestly

And thus it revealed to Sven-Eric Bechtilf, the director, that the gods took an elevator up into Valhalla. What a stupid production.
Staging is just terrible - typical Thielemann (no chance compared to the MET cycle with Bryn Terfel - THAT IS WAGNER!!!)
The Met cycle is one of the worst in the history of Wagner. I think the Met people are still embarrassed about it.
What has the conductor Thielemann to do with the staging?
@Bravo Luca By the way : Adam Fischers conducting is much more interesting than Thielann's. Staging is very much OK !
