Your leasons were helpful to me and are the best for learning Spanish on you tube, the only reason being your grammatical approach in teaching which makes learning easy. I am looking forward to learn more from you. Mucho Gracias Senor
The "-car -gar -zar" situation in the preterite tenses of Spanish verbs exists because of hard and soft sounds. An -ar verb with a stem ending in a "c" has to lose the "c" and replace the letter with "qu" in the preterite yo form to maintain a hard "c" sound before the preterite -ar yo form suffix (-é). An -ar verb with a stem ending in a "g" has to add a "u" after a "g" for the preterite yo form so the "g" can maintain its hard sound before the same suffix. An -ar verb with a stem ending in a "z" has to replace that "z" with a "c" in the preterite yo form because the "z" doesn't have a soft sound. "Z" is just supposed to provide an equivalent of a soft "c" sound before "a," "o," or "u" when used within a word or at the end of a word. Think of a "z" within a word in Spanish as meaning the same thing as a cedilla added to a "c" to make the "c" soft before "a," "o," or "u" (as this way: ç) which is currently done in French and Portuguese. The cedilla is actually a hooked "z" and was originally used in Old Spanish, so don't assume that that diacritical mark has nothing to do with the Spanish language just because the mark is no longer used in that language!

Thank you for this video! I am wrestling with the preterite and the imperfect right now. I was just searching for some help and found your video. So clear. I didn't yet know about the "car, zar, or gar" verbs either!
i love your videos i hav liked and subscibed to your channel because your the only teacher who explains things in a way I understand. is there a way to view the begginer videos in order?
Thank you for all the lessons you gave us. They're awesome. Spanish conjugation is difficult, even more difficult than French. I think for people who know Latin, it could be a little bit easier. Anyway, Spanish seems easier with AIB lessons.
I was watching your interview with “Katie Williams” I feel for you. That seemed painful. The interviewer had the personality and intelligence of a rock. “ Different types of Spanishes?” Those questions were poorly worded. Her consistent “Uh, ok,” responses indicated that this was a complete waste of your time.

"I used to visit you on Sundays" still would BE the Preterite, but it would be the Imperfect Preterite. Preterite means PAST and there are different tenses within the Preterite
