In the mid-1970s a work colleague of mine had the surname of Hooker. Needless to say once Xaviera Hollander's book came out the poor chap was thereafter known by one and all as "Happy"!
I spent part of a summer with my sister when I was 11 or 12, and she had both The Happy Hooker and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex on her shelves. Looking back, I wonder if that was intentional. Both books ... were informative to an 11 or 12 year old boy.
I read the Happy Hooker when I was 11. It was eye opening. Just ordered a copy of Jaws 2 from Thrift books for 6.00 dollars US. Amazon is asking 24 to 65.00. I guess it’s been out of print for awhile. Garbaugust read for me.
Interesting review! I haven't read it, but it bought to mind other things like the HBO show "The Deuce" which I thought was quite good: showing the commodification of the "pleasure industry" in the 70's. Also the movie "Looking for Mr Goodbar" that I don't think I've seen. Based on a novel by Judith Rossner--which I haven't read but am somewhat interested in: have you read it?
I'm really curious what you're going to think about Jaws 2 . Re-read that one and Jaws the Revenge, which is from the same author, in May respectively June. The screenplay it's based on was revised so heavily (after filming had started already) that one of the screenwriters credited on the book wasn't even mentioned in the film's credits. I don't want to decide if the book is better than the original Jaws novel (which actually had a few things that bothered me) but although the Jaws 2 film was a little disappointing to me, it has at least one advantage over the novelization: you finish it faster!
I haven't read either book. In a somewhat similar vein, though, my mother had a book called Coffee, Tea, or Me, which was about stewardesses (back when stewardess was considered one of the sexiest occupations, I guess). I've found the first book I'm going to read for GARBAUGUST. It's called The Searing, by John Coyne, and the premise is so utterly ridiculous I have to check it out. Women have orgasms that kill them. And the blurb says something about an 11 year old autistic girl, I just can't. :)
@kimba8387 Oh, that's awesome, thanks for the trivia bit. I read a Murder She Wrot book for GARBAUGUST 2023. It was, coincidentally, Coffee, Tea...or Murder.
I found some of her stuff - I think it was a book but maybe a different book? - in the late 70s/early 80s when I was quite young... never forgot her name, lol. I thought it was all made up stuff (as naive as I was); cool to hear the story behind it.
@@ShannonsChannel it was. That section was cut from my edition but I found an online edition of the book so was able to read it there. Not sure I should have 😂

LOL that's brilliant
I read parts of The Happy Hooker when I was too young to do so. I was babysitting my niece and found it among my older sister's stuff.
TBH I think I was too young to read it 😂
Oh my goodness😂

😂 I bet
I’m so glad you read it so a lot of us don’t ever have to. 😊😁 - 📚MJ

@@CriminOllyBlog There is no lie. 🤣😂
This definitely has a 70's vibe. Is this considered a Pulp cover? A board game? Wow!
Not really pulp I don’t think, just cheese 😂
@@CriminOllyBlog 😆😆😆
Olly, I would love to see a video of you tackling censorship. And delve into book banning. Thank you.
Oooo, that’s an interesting idea. I’ll give it some thoughts. Thanks, Diane!
@@CriminOllyBlog You're welcome, Olly. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your insights and time.

Yeah I imagine it was definitely eye opening at 11 😂😂

Hi! No I haven’t read Waiting for Mr Goodbar or seen the show I’m afraid!

lol at that last point! Will probably read it in August

I have Coffee, Tea or Me. Not read yet but will soon.
Naturally I have just bought a copy of The Searing 😂
There's 4 Coffee Tea or Me books which were actually written by Donald Bain who went on to write the Murder She Wrote mystery books xo

Some of it may well be made up! I imagine it was pretty alarming if you were young 😂
@@CriminOllyBlog oh yes, definitely!! The part that stuck in my mind was with a dog. I'm wondering if that's the scene you were mentioning as well.

Interesting vs of books there. 😄
Thanks!
This is the book the Happy Hooker movie was based on?? One of my favorite historical drag queens was in that film!
Ha! Brilliant. Yes it is
