Am I the only one who sees potential in LIVE ACTUON versions of Big Finish audio series like "Stranded",
"The War Doctor Begins", "Missy" and of course the 9th Doctor series done recently?
Doctor Who has a mind blowing mythos the BBC is failing to tap into like Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC and other brands have.
Big Finish's profile as a company would be boosted big time and considering the BBC is starting it's own streaming service what a better reason for Doctor Who spin offs?
Adaptions of their Time War and Gallifrey series would be HUGE hits.
And best thing? There's material for endless series and seasons. It's a WIN WIN for everyone.

@@davidaston5773 This is technically (I mean... "legally") imposible.
-> IF there is video of it (Doctor Who), it must be from the B.B.C. [at that point, it makes no sense for them to have "Big Finish" writting any of it].
The only reason they are even allowing non_BBC AUDIO to be done, is because of all the "Grandfathering" they already did (pasively, not by an actual choice) for all of those people who took the effort of recording the (audio) of the tv transmissions live [40+ years ago]; back when it was REALLY expensive to use your hard earned money on making "a copy" of sounds coming from your house´s tv [video recording was "posible", but totally unpractical for aficionados].

@@adolfodef I see where you're coming from but I also think the BBC should be expanding Doctor Who as a product.
It's a waste of so much potential otherwise.
It would also be way to regain the viewers the show has lost and doing what Star Trek and Star Wars is doing.
A history and mythos as long and detailed as Doctor Who is being wasted and it doesn't have to be IMHO.

If it's a choice between getting Chris back onscreen, and Chris being happy and healthy, let him live his best life. We fans may be disappointed, but we all know how damaging it can be for someone to force themselves back into something their not really prepared for, mentally or physically. Better he enjoy was he has already done than have it tarnished by something that never quite worked because his heart and mind weren't really in it.

He was my Doctor, and I am 62. The first Doctor I remember was Patrick Troughton, who was my Doctor until Christopher Ecclestone. The damaged 9th Doctor was the first one to poke into the darkness behind the lonely clown of the 2nd. The following Doctors and especially Matt Smith sometimes got the dark side shown, but only Ecclestone showed the character as someone in conflict between hope and the knowledge of what he had seen (and done). Oh, and pop poppet princess Billy Piper was immense. Which helped.

The next incarnation is Eccleston: who because time “fixes itself” doesn’t allow him to remember the War Doctor (John Hurt makes a point of saying “ I don’t suppose I will remember any of this, will I?”).
So from Eccleston’s POV he ended the Time War unaware or possibly repressing the whole War Doctor incarnation until Clara and Matt Smith’s Doctor revisit that memory.

There was a lot more to the statement released by the BBC than Christopher Eccleston not wanting to find himself typecast. They also stated that he found the shooting schedule “gruelling”, and that was also another reason why he left the role. And again, this was untrue. Another claim that he has made concerns the BBC effectively blacklisting him after he left the role of The Doctor.
Even after the half-hearted apology that the BBC made, Christopher Eccleston was still treated very very badly by the corporation and it is really no surprise that he still bears a grudge towards them. He was a fantastic Doctor and when I heard he was taking on the role I knew that the BBC were treating the revival seriously. It was a terrible shame we never got to see a second or third season with the Ninth Doctor, but frankly one season is better than none. And I seriously hope he considers appearing in the 60th Anniversary Special. Because it won’t be quite the same without him.

The show would not have made it without him and with his great connection with Billie Pipper and her mom and Mickey all combined to create a great support cast. David Tennant is my fave doctor, but the older I get, the more appreciation I have for Eccleston and wish there were more episodes of his doctor. For people like me, Doctor Who was a bit of a joke, just a campy old tv show with terrible effects (that was my ignorance, classic Who was a lot more than that), Eccleston made the character real, someone to route for, someone to get angry with but still love, someone who was full of trauma but knew when to dance.

He & Billy Piper had great chemistry & we got our introduction to John Barrowman's Captain Jack who also paired well with Eccelston's Doctor. I was surprised how memorable that season was for me on rewatch considering it's been ...15 years? since it originally aired & many seasons came after ( I stopped watching after Capaldi's 2nd season I think) Many of season one's eps were stand outs & rewatching it was such a pleasure. Sad to hear it wasn't a good experience for Eccelston considering how much I enjoyed his portrayal of The Doctor.

      3. People change during war as we know due to PTSD / adapting to the situation around them as many in history have done - to have the 'quintessential' Eighth Doctor become a soldier would be a fascinating idea to be realized.

Speaking of multi-Doctor stories, Eccleston and Jodie Whittaker both acted in a National Theatre production of Antigone around 10 years ago. It's a strange 9th/future 13th Doctor meet-up but better than nothing!
The full play can be viewed on the 'National Theatre at home' streaming service (for a cost) and there are various clips on UA-cam.

Couldn’t have imagined anyone better to bring back doctor who and who set the bar to who the docrtor was ❤ could not also imagine a more better side kick, Rose Piper! She is truely iconic and is my favourite sidekick! ❤ i wish he would come back for special episode with David Tenant and Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez the 4 best actors! As well as Billie Piper and Catherine Tate ❤❤ but hey if Eccleston wants to come back on his own then YES! Do it! I would also LOVE that!❤❤

The eighth, ninth and time war era doctors need an animated series that uses computer generated cell shaded style, similar to the What If…? series on Disney plus.

Yes, that's what WhatCulture does - numbers, top 10s. This is still very much a considered narrative, with numbers used to organise the timeline and break it up into digestible sections. Think of them like subheadings in an essay.

The true story is that he was disgusted by the degenerate onset behaviour of John Barrowman and Noel Clarke, complained about it, and was told to keep quiet by the producer. He quit and was blacklisted by the BBC who always stand by the likes of Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris.

I started watching Dr who in 2011. In the US , I watched on BBC America. Every Christmas through New Years, was a Dr Who marathon. Having only seen from 2005 on, Eccelston is my LEAST favorite. Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, Whitaker all had a playful side. I just thought Eccelston was playing the role too serious. I could be wrong. I love the show. I love the mindbending ideas. But it also makes me laugh and smile. For me, Eccelston falls short.

  • @jbanks979

I think sometimes actors and producers just aren’t a good fit. It was clearly just a case where he didn’t trust what RTD was doing, and the relationship then just broke down. I’m sure both parties tried to move on but he took offense to how he was depicted as leaving.
If the David Tennant era wasn’t an unqualified success his criticisms of the RTD era would probably have more merit with the wider public.
As it stands, I still hope fences can be mended (largely because he was SUCHHHH a perfect reboot doctor and his one season is still great)
Besides, RTD wasn’t on Doctor who for 12 years and he didn’t come back then either. The day of the Doctor was basically perfect for him and that was just Moffat

  • @Concreteowl

The attribution that did most damage wasn’t the fear of type casting but he was tired. This would have directly cost him casting considerations. There is more to it though. He is an actors actor and probably was aware of the toxicity of the environment as we now know existed. Also some of the scripts were abysmal. World War 3 and Aliens of London especially.

Eccleston was fine but his time as the Doctor is done. You typically don't get solo TV series outings of past Doctors. Although if anyone deserved a limited series it would be the 8th Doctor where we only ever got a single mediocre movie.
