  • Today, I'm going to review a beer from the Boston Beer Company, and it's their Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat. This is an American Pale Wheat Ale that is brewed with Michigan cherries and honey. To me, this is a classic when it comes to fruit beers. I've never loved this one, but always found it solid, so I figured I'd finally give it a proper review. Let's see what I think about it!
    Commercial Description:
    Crisp and fruity with a hint of honey, this ale brewed with Michigan cherries is light on the palate, yet full of surprising depth and flavor. The cherries contribute a tart fruit character, while a touch of honey adds a slight sweetness.
    Pertinent Information:
    Brewery - Boston Beer Company (Boston, MA)
    Beer - Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat
    Style - American Pale Wheat Ale (Brewed w/ Michigan cherries & honey)
    ABV - 5.3%
    IBU - 23

    Saw it at Beer Marketplace and it brought up college memories. Haven’t had it in like 30 years. Excited to try it again…….okay, tried it nice and cold. Terrific! Like you said, very refreshing and the right balance of cherry and honey sweetness. Cheers 🍻

      Glad you still like it, Jon! I know a lot of folks get that medicinal cherry vibe, but I've never had the displeasure of picking up on it. Not my favorite fruit beer or anything, but super crushable and nice enough for what it is. Thanks for the comment, man!
      Cheers!

      Nice, Liliana! Let me know what you think about the Cherry Wheat. I didn't love the Jack-O, but I got a lot of cinnamon from it. That said, I know a lot of folks who enjoy that one, so I'm not surprised you love it. I appreciate the comment!

      Hi, I just had one cherry wheat and I felt drinking cough syrup 😒was a little disappointing, I don’t hate it but definitely won’t buy it again.

      I'm sorry to hear that! That is one of the main reasons I asked. In the video, I mentioned some folks get the medicinal cherry character, so it's unfortunate you were one of 'em. I don't pick up on that note too much, so some people seem to be more sensitive to it. I do appreciate the update, though!

      Thanks, Josh! Dude, their Octoberfest is one of the better American-brewed beers within the style. The fact it's cheap and has great availability makes it even better.

      It's one of those beers that you're either going to get the medicinal cherry vibe, or you won't. Regardless, it's pretty cheap (if you can grab a single), so it's worth giving it a go. I would say this beer has a 50/50 love/hate relationship with most people I know, haha!

    Samuel Adams Porch Rocker is the only product from them that I have not liked. I never tried the cranberry Lambic, although I've heard that was a disaster. This one is about the middle of the road for me as far as their products go. Quite nice but nothing spectacular. I prefer their more malt forward brews. I feel like that is where Samuel Adams has always shined. Great review as always and cheers!

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 роки тому +1

      I cannot agree more with you, Nathan! For me, Samuel Adams' Winter Classics (or whatever it's called now) is my favorite of their seasonals. Their Octoberfest is good, too. My favorites from them are most definitely malt-forward. I've never had Porch Rocker, so maybe that's one I grab to review soon. It's a Radler, right? That is a style that can go south for me in a hurry, but I LOVE a well-made Radler. Thanks for sharing, dude!
      Cheers, Nathan!

    • @nathanfaith8973
      @nathanfaith8973 2 роки тому +1

      @@averagejoe716 Yes, Porch Rocker is a radler. I've honestly never had a true German one but that's what they say it is. They could be full of shit as far as I know, haha.. SA's just tastes like lemon/lime juice after the first sip imo. It has a really nice helles flavor on first sip, but the juices just overpowered the actual beer after that. I'd rank my top 5 SA brews as Octoberfest, Fezziwig, Holiday Porter, Chocolate Bock and Winter Lager. Boston Lager would be a top 5 contender. I will say I prefer malt-forward beer for sure, especially Marzens, but there are breweries who's hoppy beer definitely trumps their malty ones.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 роки тому +1

      As far as "authentic" German Radlers, I think the Schöfferhofer Grapefruit is the only one I've had, and I'm not sure how authentic it is. I really enjoyed it, though. I think I'll grab Porch Rocker and give it a proper review to see how I like it. Maybe next month, if I remember. Yeah, your top-five is probably close to mine. As far as malt-forward vs. hop-forward, it all depends on the brewery, for sure. In general, I prefer hop-forward beers, but some of my favorite beers -- and styles -- are definitely malt-forward. All depends, I guess.

    Whats your opinion on Blue Moon? Do you consider that a fruit beer? Also have ypu tried the Blue Moon Hazy Pale Ale? Its really good.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  2 роки тому +1

      Nah, Blue Moon is a Belgian-style Witbier, which typically are brewed with orange peel and coriander. So, I don't consider it a fruit beer. I have not had the Blue Moon Hazy Pale Ale yet. If I see that, I'll grab it and give it a go. I've always enjoyed Blue Moon to some degree. For the price and availability, it's solid. I still much prefer Hoegaarden over it, though.

    I brewed a cheery wheat and compared it to Samual Adam’s . I used cherry extract not the best choice . My daughter said it had a medicinal taste but I didn’t notice it . What I did notice is that I made the wrong hop choice , and ended up with a hoppy wheat that was off the charts. When I compared my beer to Samuel Adam’s .I lost big time .Cheers Joe.

      That is the beauty of homebrewing though, Stoney! Despite you not making a great clone of the Cherry Wheat, you ended up with something that was still delicious, albeit not what you were expecting. It happens. Glad it worked out for you, though!

      I used to hate their Summer Ale until I reviewed it a few years back and realized it's good for what it is. I think Sam Adams makes solid across-the-board beer, though. I recently revisited this one. I had it a long long time ago and I remember hating it. I thought it tasted very mediciney like cherry cough syrup. Now I dont think its that bad. Its still not great but I'd probably give it a C instead of a D or a F like before. The mediciney cough syrup flavor isnt as pronounced as I once thought it was and I didnt really pick it up. Dont know if they changed the formula or my palate changed. Its also possible the one I had years ago that I hated could have been expired because I dont remember checking for dates back then. The one I just had wasnt expired. Still dont think its great or even that good but I didnt totally hate it and want to drain pour it like before.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  8 місяців тому

      I wonder if they "remastered" it like the Boston Lager? LOL! I never hated this one like some, as I mentioned in the review that I never got the medicinal vibes that others pick up on, but I never loved it, either. Just a solid Fruited Wheat Ale. Glad that it's not a drain-pour for you anymore! I'm not sure about age being a factor, but you never know, and it'd make sense.
      Cheers, Chaz!

      @@averagejoe716 Its happened to me before. I use to absolutely hate Rolling Rock and thought it was one my top 3 worst AAL's ever but I slowly warmed up to it and now I dont mind it and think its pretty decent. Yeah, I've been there. It rarely happens, but my opinion on a few beers have changed drastically. Same happened to me for their Summer Ale. Thought it was horrible a good 10-12 years ago, and when I reviewed it a few years back, I was surprised that I didn't mind it.

      Yep, that's what some people say. My palate doesn't pick up on the cherry cough syrup vibe, so that is why I enjoy it to some extent. If it came off as cherry cough syrup for me, I would most likely dislike it with a passion. I've had some cherry beers that give me that medicinal vibe, and it's not for me.

      I think it's one of those issues where some people get that medicinal flavor from cherry in drinks, and some don't. It's funny, if I asked 10 people whether or not this tastes medicinal or not, I'd probably get a split response. I'm not sensitive to it, so I find it OK. Some people, like yourself, hate it. On a side note, I love Luden's cough drops, so that probably helps, haha! Appreciate the comment!
