To my astonishment, Marc Sabbah is yet another splendid player of the viola out of a group I have come to discover recently. I am amazed at the present range of outstanding international violists when I compare the paucity of such in former times.
Dear Marc, could you please say something about the provenance of your superb instrument? Many thanks & dear greetings from Bonn (Beethoven's birth place)
I've been playing viola for 3 years now and I'm a freshman in high school I'm second chair and I just wanna let you know that you've inspired me to go even more in depth with the viola because even after 3 years I had no idea it could sound that beautiful
The opening to this piece is just beautiful. I really wish there was a viola concerto with that degree of melodic beauty the whole way through, only pure singing. Most of them end up displaying virtuosity, which while fun sometimes, doesn't give me the same satisfaction that I get from letting my viola ring on sweet phrases. It's probably why I've always been so fond of Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky: they stacks so many melodic elements into their pieces. Very well done by the way. I'm definitely not at the point to where I could perform such a challenging piece (although probably not too far), so I admire your accomplishment.
so beautiful. you play this piece so well. I dream to play as good as you some day. i'm beginning to study this piece starting tomorrow. your playing is impeccable
I am shocked that this kind of a piece exists. And you play it with the emotion and power I can hope to one day. I am planning on playing this first movement for my final in orchestra, and in the six weeks I have to practice it, hopefully I can play it half as well as this. And one question: where did you get the sheet music?
Marc, this concerto is played unbelievably well, I try to listen to this recording often, because It is the best one I've found so far; and I am interested in playing this. However I have one question for you. Is there another recording out there that you enjoy quite a large deal? If so, by who? I am curious. Great work on this concerto, truly magnificent.
+That One Skier Thank you for your nice comment. I'm glad you enjoyed my performance. There is not a recording I particularly love but Lars Anders Tomter has quite a good version.
You are so good. I really think you are among the top of the world. (sure you made like 3 small mistakes) but wow your control and tone of the viola is amazing. I am working on this piece myself and using your fingering and interpretation. I hope you dont mind :D
Wonderful performance. I'm actually looking for a copy of just the viola part with all mvts for an audition. I was wandering were i could find a good copy, because it's still under copy right so imslp doesn't have it. Were did you get yours?
Thank you for the comment. I'm afraid you're going to have to buy the piano reduction with viola solo part. Boosey & Hawkes sell a good version that I use but of course I've changed bowing and added my own personal flare as I hope you will. Good luck.
I played this. Very uncomfortable piece. Doesn't "lay well" on the viola at all. Though it does have "cool" parts. The A-major-ish part or the tiny fuge towards the end of the first movement. Great rendering! Kudos! 😁👍
I do not understand this music. Is atonal and un-structured. Maybe it was written to create a feeling of uncertainty. The soloist has a very good sound and intonation. Congrats !
Hi, I am sorry! I gave this a thumbs down! It isn't really that I think you did a bad job (I especially liked your vibrato at the start), but I have to say I am not such a huge fan of your interpretation generally. I know you were slowing down for effect, but some times I thought it broke the flow of the music. Also, if you make a face while you are playing, it creates tension which spreads into the rest of your body and makes it harder to play.
I see your point, but see some of the most famous violinists (ie vengerov, Perlman) making faces as a result of pure emotion they feel whilst playing. If we all played with a straight face, we would be void of this display of emotion while we play. We are performers as well as musicians, an audience appreciates a show of emotion and passion, not just a beautifully performed concerto.
people don't realize that violas are just amazing as violins (even more) and this video shows it.
+NikkiThePlatypus Fantastic comment! Thank you NikkiThePlatypus :)

I'm a violist myself, and I must admit I often go to your channel for references for pieces I'm working on! Beautiful! Stunning!

your viola looks kind of small, is ti a 15 1/2”, 16” or above?
by the way good playing.
Shiu Chit Chan thank you. It's 16 and a quarter. It is a slender viola.
You are so good. I really think you are among the top of the world. (sure you made like 3 small mistakes) but wow your control and tone of the viola is amazing. I am working on this piece myself and using your fingering and interpretation. I hope you dont mind :D

Is the first time I see a good reason for dislike a video; congratulations, good man.
the body reveals the emotions we feel. I make faces when he plays and when I play too .
