  • From start to finish a timelapse of building a custom surfboard for a friend. All steps from making a blank from EPS block foam, hotwiring the blank, shaping the blank, sealing, installing fin boxes, glassing, hotcoating, sanding, paint work and gloss coating with epoxy. This is around 8 hours of footage time-lasped into 12 minutes.

    Why did you paint the glassed board after glassing at 11 minutes (when foam was already painted before glassing) and it appears to have been gloss coated twice (once before and once after the second painting). Really informative video.

    Beautiful work. Can you explain to me why the board was painted on the blank and on top of the glass with the same design?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  8 років тому +3

      +Tony Stokes The paint on the blank did not come out as nice as I like so I redid the paint job. Was just being overly picky LOL

    Super bueno ese video ... lo que me gustaria saber es que le puso para que los solbentes de la fibra no derritan la espuma flex

    This comment is for Goncalo Cardoso. Dont use polyester resin on eps foam. It will eat the foam. You might be able if you put down a sealer but i wouldnt. Epoxy resin only. On a poly blank you can use poly or epoxy resin but not on eps foam.

    I loved the video that board is sick, I am taking a class in school that is making fiber glass boards and I need a good design and size, were do you think I can get a template to follow for the shape?

    Hey man, awesome video series. Helped me heaps shaping my first board. I was wondering did you have any problems with delamination painting the blank and then hot coat like that? Cheers

  • @AndrewWorkshop
    @AndrewWorkshop  9 років тому +1

    Goncalo not sure why I can't comment directly to you. I'm not sure what the pro surfers uses, regardless they ride boards that are glassed really light and don't last very long since they are looking for performance not durability.

      Aloha Andrew, is there a reason for coloring the foam before laminating then spraying more color after sanding the hotcoat? Just curious. Nice board!

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  9 років тому +2

      dkyasui No reason, more of trial and error, I originally painted the foam first and then glassed to see how it came out. I wasn't happy with the result so I sprayed color directly on the sanded hotcoat then did a gloss coat over that. The color really popped after that!

      Andrew W Hi Andrew, wondering what kind of paint was used before gloss. I am thinking of painting but am afraid of the epoxy beading up on the paint

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  9 років тому

      dkyasui The paint used is acrylic paint, general rule of thumb is water based paints are safe to use. Don't use any lacquer paints and oil paints are bad because epoxy might not adhere to it.

      +Andrew W that is the way a lot of the shops are doing it, the later method with EPS. Your epoxy finish spray looks amazing! What glass schedule did you use for a good, solid EPS board?
      My first and last EPS board was a Santa Cruz. It lasted about 2 hours before I decide to do the first air and it broke on a landed "alley oops." It was faster than PU, but obviously weaker... After I fumed over that $800 board for a few years with it sitting up perforated in front of my deck pad, I decide to cut it open and just see the culprit... a defective stringer and porous red foam was to blame. Their red foam looks like 3/16" with a thin stringer. I figured that since I like how it rode, I'd keep the $800 board for the plans within.
      Your board is probably stronger than that one without the failed stringer in question. If I build an EPS, you can bet I'm looking for a carbon bagged stringer to put in the core. I think that would help EPS withstand forces like a PU board. Thanks for the video and answer to the glass in advance, it was a helpful video!🌊

      +Jeff Worthington It's hard to say since I the materials can make more than one board. But if I were to give a rough estimate, I'd say around $300, that's including fin boxes and fins.

      Andrew W won't it affect the bond?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  9 років тому +1

      +daliks Theoretically yes anything between the foam and epoxy will affect the bond, but practically speaking it's not an issue, never had an issue. Just make sure it's fully dry before doing the lamination.
