This documentary JODI SOTYI KATHA BOLO (If You Speak Truth) is inspired by true incidents related to one of India’s eminent Sarod Artists, Pandit Jotin Bhattacharya (1926-2016).
Pandit Jotin Bhattacharya : The Emperor of Bandish
"Calcutta has invited you. ... Calcutta is the place where music can be judged. Audience prefer sweetness as well as something new. They judge the Ragas too. Do not render "rukha" instrumental like me. I bless that you get fame there." On 8 August 1957, Baba Allauddin Khan sent this blessing to his disciple Jotin. That year, in Tansen Music Conference, Sarod-player Pt. Jotin Bhattacharya (1 January 1926 - 22 February 2016), who lived in Benaras, played in front of live audience for the first time. He attained fame quickly. Apart from invitations from several music programmes and live telecasts from Akashvani (All India Radio), his first LP record from HMV came in 1972. One side of that album contained his own creation - Raga 'Sampurna Kanada' - which was a milestone in Hindusthani classical music. At the tender age of 8, without getting any training, he played a Pankaj Mullick song 'Piya Milan Ko Jana' in the harmonium kept at his home. He got noticed by musician Biru Maharaj. After getting the initial training of Sarod from him, Jotin went to Maihar in 1949 to take further training from Allauddin Khan as his only resident student continually for 7 years. He worked as Baba's secretary, too. Throughout his life, he never got distracted from the path shown by his Guru. He kept Allauddin's picture on a silver-coated plate attached at the top of his 9-peg Sarod. Jotin Bhattacharya, a successful representative of Senia Beenkar Gharana, also experimented with 'Jawa' of Sarod. His two published books have his Guru at their center - "Ustad Allauddin Khan and His Music" (1979) and "Ustad Allauddin Khan and Us" (উস্তাদ আলাউদ্দিন খাঁ ও আমরা) (1st volume in 1995 and 2nd volume in 1996). The second book is a memoir. There, he has openly written about the marital problems of Allauddin's daughter Annapurna - "I told Ravi Shankar privately, I want to talk to you. ... Do you have any idea what others tell behind your back? In spite of having your own home, you do not stay there, but roam outside. ... Understanding the situation, Ravi Shankar told with a philosopher's look, you don't know, Annapurna can't adjust." The same book contains the story of Nikhil Bandyopadhyay, another star of Indian classical music. One day, Nikhil, then disciple of Baba Allauddin, had to leave his Guru and Maihar. But why? In the music circle, a 'False' claim has been established that Jotin Bhattacharya's conspiracy was behind this. But what happened in the background was something else... Because he took the truth's side, he fell into the rage of the powerfuls and got thrown out of the path of his so-called rank. Still, Baba Allauddin Khan and Truth were his life-long companions.

অসাধারণ ডকুমেন্টারি। পন্ডিত যতীন ভট্টাচার্যের নাম বাঙালীর মন থেকে মুছে দেওয়া হয়েছে। আজ নতুন করে অনেক কিছু জানলাম। অনেক তথাকথিত পূজনীয় মানুষদেরও নতুন করে চিনলাম।
অসম্ভব মূল্যবান কাজ।
গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানাই ওঁকে।
এই ডকুমেন্টরি টা দেখে, চিন্তা ভাবনার একটা নতুন দিক খুলে গেলো।
সত্যি, সত্য রি জয় হয়।আর সততার।

তথ্যচিত্র টি দেখে আমার খুব ভাল লাগল, আমি যেখানে থাকি সেখানেই যতিন বাবু থাকতেন কলকাতায়, কালীঘাটের যদু ভট্টাচার্য লেন এ, নাদুদার বাড়ীতে, হয়ত কলকাতাতে থাকলে, আমি দেখেছি, খুব সুন্দর দেখতে,একটা লাল রংয়ের শাল গায়ে জড়ান, তখন আমার বয়স ১৬, এখন ৭১, যখন হাতে যন্ত্র (সরোদ) নিয়ে একটু হেটে বড় রাস্তায় এসে ট্যাক্সি ধরতেন তখন সমস্ত পাড়াতে সুন্দর আতরের গন্ধ ছড়িয়ে পড়ত, তখন এই বদ্য় যন্ত্র সমন্ধে কোন আগ্রহ ছিল না, পরিবর্তি কালে আগ্রহ হল, একটা যন্ত্র যোগার করলাম কিন্ত শেখা হলনা, কিন্তু যন্ত্রটা এখন রয়েগেছে,যাই হোক এই মহান শিল্পী কে আমার সশ্রদ্ধ প্রনাম, ওনার সঙ্গীতের মূর্ছনা কোনদিন ম্লান হবেনা।
অনেক অজানা তথ্য জানা গেল। খুব ভালো লাগলো
সত্যিই অসাধারণ তথ্যচিত্র !
শুধু সঙ্গীতের জগতেই নয়, সমগ্ৰ শিল্পজগতেই যে কি বিশ্রী নোংরামী ছিলো এবং আছে, তাই জানা ছিলো--কিন্তু এভাবে যে প্রকাশ পাবে কখনো, তাই কল্পনাও করিনি। এই শেষ বয়সে এসে এসব প্রকাশিত হলো দেখে বেদনাহত হলাম।
তাই হোক, সত্য তো একদিন না একদিন প্রকাশ পাবেই।

Jotin Kaku's life reminds me of Ekalavya's story. The only difference probably was that here Guru Baba Allauddin Khan Sahib was not Dronacharya .....🙏
