The BMW M3 was BMW’s high performance coupe, convertible, and sometimes, in low quantities, even a sedan. Now, the BMW M3 is ONLY a sedan, with an M3 Touring wagon version in the works which we may not see in the United States. The name was a standard at BMW. No matter how cool an M5 was, the M3 was always cooler.
Ever since 2014, there has been a new name for BMW’s best selling performance coupe, and that’s the BMW M4. It sounded weird when it was announced. Decades of M3s and all of a sudden we have this new branding for the coupes and convertibles. Bold move by BMW to walk away from decades old nomenclature, but the decision was based on standardizing the line up. BMW coupes and convertibles now carry an even number M2, M4, M8, while sedans use an even number like the M3 and M5.
So, being that all things mechanical are pretty much identical between the M3 and M4, we explore which of the two is the “better” car, and for us, the BMW M3 is the better choice over the M4.

Not loaded over the top, and not bare bones either. Its a good balance but the manual makes it!
How long you had to wait ?……iam 2nd in line and been waiting 3 1/2 months 🤷🏻♂️
@@Top_g80comp I was second in line in April of 2022, but didn't get an allocation until October of 2022. Got the car right before Christmas. It was a 14 month total time from ordering to delivery.

Sounds like all personal preferences. You never mentioned the advantage of weight distribution of M4 to M3. Why do you think BMW created CSL M4 not M3 . Go Figure!
Chris, you're right, these are all personal preferences. The reason I did not go into a performance comparison and cover the weight distro or the aerodynamic advantage the M4 has over the M3 (both the roofline and quarter panel air flow are big advantages for the M4) is because I wasn't comparing performance. If you want the faster car, the M4 is the faster car, no argument there. With that said, the performance is so neck and neck, 99% of the buyers will never push to that limit. I also think the M4 has the better looking roofline and side profile. But in my opinion, the advantages of the M3 outweigh (haha) the minor performance of the M4 and its visual aesthetic. That's why I was covering those view points instead.
Regarding the CSL badge...
You remember when BMW's nomenclature had meaning? For example a 325 meant it was a 3 series with a 2.5L? Well they scrapped that so everything can conform. Or when an M3 was a coupe for the majority of it's life until they decided to use even numbers for coupes and odd numbers for 4-doors? That's how we got the M4 instead of an M3 Coupe. Well, a long time ago CSL stood for "Coupe Sport Lightweight" and only an M3 Coupe wore the badge. And the M3's version of the CSL was the M3 CS, originally meaning "Club Sport". Now, to make things conform again, BMW changed the meaning of CSL to "Competition Sport Lightweight" and CS to "Competition Sport". It was only natural for the M4 to get the CSL badge and the upcoming top end version of the M3 to get the CS badge. I'm not saying you're wrong in any way, the M4 is the lighter car and deserves the CSL badge over the M3. Just sharing the history of the CSL.
Can't do it. BMW has done little to nothing for me in a couple of decades now. For real world practicality, quality, aesthetics, Audi is wildly better. I do think that grill will haunt the brand, forever.
