Thanks to Virtual Box we will emulate a guest operating system, then configure the display settings and shared folder through Guest Additions. Finally showing how to run a game (Doom Plutonia Experiment in our case).

You do realise that Oracle won't play any games with more than 256mbs of vram?
Thank you so much. This Tutorial really helped me understand what needed to be done. I'd just add that starting at version 6.1 virtualbox doesn't support graphic acceleration for Windows XP anymore. If you need graphic acceleration you must either use Windows 7 (or later) or you will have to downgrade to VM VirtualBox 6.0 Thanks Again

Just use and older Vbox guest additions ISO.
It works flawlessly for me

Can I transfer a game from my main disk to the virtual one or do I need to re-download it if I want to play it?
You need to install a game platform that you can redownload from and then re download onto the VM you cannot transfer an installed game from your host computer to your VM it will just take too long and the game won't launch, because your VM will return an error or exception stating: "unsupported video card".
And then it will tell you the specific video card the vm is using

Any ideas how to run programs on win xp virtual box with 2D and 3D acceleration?
I did all this, however my problem is: 1. It says that there's not enough space for installation. Even though I have space well above what is required to install the game. 2. Hey buddy go to the view options. It doesn’t show up until you start the OS which in this case is XP. So start xp once you’re on your desk top move your curser up and you’ll see a view button that when hovered over will give u a list of options. I was able to scale it out to fit on a 50 inch tv and it worked…..but I warn you 😂 xp resolution is just not anything like what we have today so it’s gonna look kinda fuzzy.

Great vid, I appreciated.I haven't used XP in 20 years. I only have with the program and its my NFL Blitz Pc Game. Installation and the Direct X check up was good. But playing the game everything is in white boxes. Its Direct 3D Shell is in VMware SVGA II in DirectDraw Device, which is where the problem is. Is there way to change DirectDraw Device in XP?
I guess that if you have the driver, you will be able to. However, considering the OS is emulated, there may be limited access to certain memory areas, so, those drivers may not work at all :/
@@Squakenet I figured that would be the problem. That disk heavily relies on the 3D processor throughout my years of using it on computers and laptops with their drivers. However, thanks again for the help and response!

Someone plz help! I am trying to run Shrek 2, but every time I try to run it it says ' please insert dvd/rom' , even though I have the disk in the computer. Ive tried installing it onto the VM, but it comes up with the same issue.
You have not got the VM to detect your physical Drive, shutdown the guest OS, then go into it's settings, add hardware, then choose your physical DVD drive
Why do you install the games in normal OS then open in in guest OS instead of installing and opening in guest OS? Most games can still be installed on Windows 10 but not all. Just got Toy Story Activity Center and it won't install so I have to do it the through guess OS (virtual box).
Try with some game developed in early 2000 :)
So whenever I try to do this, it says I don't have 256 mb of video memory and I can't pick that check box. I have enough memory set in the settings and 3D acceleration is turned on. Can someone help?
Edit: Okay I figured out how to fix this. I was using the latest version of the guest edition which removed the 3d acceleration feature. But now I have a new problem. When I install one of those VM boxes, windows XP loses the ability to read dics from my disc drive.
You can try to mount it before running the VM.

+Jack Graham before executing the game, try to set it with Win 98 compatibility. Otherwise just set the screen setting to 32bit and then run it.

You can try to get some no-cd crack, but in some case neither that will work. We experienced with a few games, and the only was to solve would be to run through a physical machine and original CD...
@@Squakenet yes, because as I stated with a few of these commenters, it's illegal to run the game with a no CD crack, as it is classified as, according to the company of the game, a game modification of the original files. Although beforehand I did not say original with the previous comments I made on a few of your replies to people
Hello! Great tutorial! I do have a problem though. I followed your tutorial and got to the very end where I actually launched the game. It said it can't locate the CD-ROM in order to run the play disc (I'm trying to play the original Ghost Recon). Do you know the fix for this? Thanks!
Yes, unfortunately many game at the time introduced some protection CD lock, so now, even with the original you won't be able to play through emulation. You should find a no-cd crack and it should work (yes, even if you have the original) or play into a physical Win xp machine.
+Squakenet so what you're saying is that you can't play an old game on disk without cracking it or play on an actual Windows XP computer? For fuck sakes...

+Kate Brown you'll need to install them again. The VM will act like a new computer, see 21:15 - some game may not need installation, but majority will.
I think the directory you typed is incorrect, it should on windows vms or physical machines be something like this, D:/Games or maybe this, C:/Program Files x86, or just C:/Program Files and then you select the directory where your games are stored

I did exactly what you did, i activate the 3d accelerator (safe mode, enable it from settings and all) but i can't play any game. I'm trying to play simple games from 1999 and nothing works. It always give me a message like "Directx fail" or "your computer does not have graphic accelerator", any suggestions? Thanks!
char Mario it's strange. The dxdiag command should enable the 3D acceleration. However a few games using directly graphic card driver memory won't work on emulation. We noticed it with 3DFX (Voodoo) games such as Pandemonium or similar as they request to access the memory directly (emulation won't allow). The only way is finding some patch to run on modern operating system or getting an old machine unfortunately...
Squakenet Meh.. I think it wont work anyway.. I found this forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=16 and i believe this is the answer althought the post is old. Anyway, thanks for your tutorial and for your reply.
char Mario
It's the same I told you mentioning specific graphic cards (Voodoo). However you will be able to play many games that are not using it. Just to make some example, we played recently (on the same installation we made in the tutorial) to Darkseed 2, Metal Marines, ... Indeed when you will have to deal with 3D acceleration some game that is making use of specific driver feature won't work (Pandemonium is an example). In any case 80% of the games we're running in XP are working fine. Half of the 20% is not (10%) is running fine with Win98 emulation, the rest will need a physical machine to run.
Squakenet Darkseed 2! Currently i'm playing it through DosBox, it's fine to play games via DosBox or Scummvm but there are some games i can't play like King Of The Road, Interstate 82 ' and Nfs 2, these games was the reason i tried to experiment with the Virtual Machine. They just won't work on Windows 8.1.
I'm under the strong impression that Linux OSs cannot host a Windows XP guest with 3D acceleration enabled.
for some reason when i run my .exe file for war and peace it looks like it tries to start but the top of the screen goes black and nothing else happens
Not all games will be running unfortunately.

Using Oracle VM to run Windows XP seems even more of a pain than simply having a 15 year old computer that runs Window XP. Not only is getting Direct X to work on the blasted thing a complete nuisance, but some games like Lego Rock Raiders just won't work even after setting it up! Also, I can't even look up the walkthrough on RockRaidersUnited (the only walkthrough on that game that actually works) anymore, because the website has been terminated and every other source (which are few and far between) don't work for me at all! This is why I'm considering just buying an old Windows XP laptop, because a desktop computer takes up too much space!
Good consideration... if you can buy some old windows machine, it would be better and less headhaches!!
Exactly. I was thinking about getting a refurbished laptop from 2006 or so that runs Windows XP. That way I can play my old games again and it wouldn't take up too much space unlike a desktop computer. That and they only cost a fraction of the price of a modern PC, so it's a win win scenario.
